Genesis 15 is one of my favorite chapters in the Holy Bible

Just heard Melchizedek being mentioned on the radio today, correctly just as you explained.

I’ve noticed that bread and wine seem to often be used in messianic foreshadows of Jesus as our redeemer: -Melchizedek brought out bread and wine as someone who is both high priest and king. (The only other person to be a priest AND a king in the Bible is Jesus) -Boaz (as the kinsman redeemer) invited Ruth to eat at his table and gave her bread and wine -Joseph (a foreshadow of Jesus in many ways) was in prison with a baker (bread) and a cupbearer (wine). Their dreams seem to point to Jesus. The baker was to have his body broken and be hung on a tree. The cupbearer was, after 3 days to be lifted up to his former position. And of course, Jesus asked his disciples (and us) to remember him with the meal of bread and wine.

@@richardhart8804 One of the most common images in the iconography of the early church for the Eucharist was Melchizedek bringing bread and wine.

"Do not harm the oil and the wine." Revelations 6:6, and the angel may have been speaking of those coming to Christ in the Tribulation.

One thing I've noticed in my studies, no where (that I know of) does the Angel of the Lord have a "job". Melchizedek had a job - he was a priest and a king.

My best guess is Shem. It is, I think, within his timeline, and Abraham reverenced him, but as an elder. As Abraham's oldest ancestor, Shem would have been entitled to a tenth of what Abraham gained from the war.
@chadbird1517Күн бұрын
@@MarSchlosser It’s possible. That is the tradition which many Jews, and even Martin Luther, believed.

How could it be Shem when we record of his genealogy? Noah and his wife had Shem. (genuine question asked for further clarification of your perception, not to be abrasive nor argumentative in any way brother) If it is him then it disrupts the typology Hebrews 7:3 unveils. That same verse also puts me in agreement with the idea that Melchizedek isn’t the pre-incarceration of Christ Jesus 0:28 because it distinctly says that he resembles the Son of God whereas Jesus is the Son of God.

@ I think you make great and valid points! I don’t believe it is Shem.

@@elijahhawkins521 Then we still have the problem of having no way of understanding/reconciling who Melchizedek was. If we take Heb 7:3 literally is Christ but can't be Christ? No Father or Mother, Begging or End, remains a priest forever. I'm not saying I know the answer as being either: Shem, pre-Incarnate Christ, or some Birthless Deathless High-Priest of God that is scarcely mention in the Bible. I'm just not convinced we can dismiss either Shem or Christ. Both of them make more sense than someone else. Maybe he was "just" an Angel? But I'm not aware if angels ever being called "priest" or "king" tho we do see they are/can be "princess" and "powers". God bless.

@@mandodelorian4668 I do not see the problem of having no way of understanding who Melchizedek was. There is significance seen in Genesis that this is another man who worships the same True and Living God that Abraham worships and obeys. And Hebrews explodes any surface level perception of what God was orchestrating after the kings’ war, and it gives understanding of who he is, his priesthood, and their significance as an unveiling of Christ Jesus once again fulfilling the scriptures as He said that He came to do. God bless you as well.

So given Hebrews explains Melchizedek as having no father or mother, are we to take away he is eternal? As well as in light of psalm 110?

I think maybe You are right with your interpretation, but it also says he has no father and mother and he is without beginning and ending. So how can an human being without that? And if the Enoch tradition is right, why in the text, it doesn‘t state that explicitly?

My take on *if it is* Shem and we're not told that is due to Ancestor Worship. My understanding is that ancestor worship was very prevalent in ancient times, if not even now!
