It means that if the log completely burns out, (not the fire) the son will die. So, in order to prevent her son from dying she stopped the fire and hid the log.

@@Rotti17 it really depended on the city-state, Greece wasn't an homogenous culture, just look at the way women in Sparta were treated vs women in Athens. Also, the myth implies that the uncle and the other men that treated Atalanta that way were wrong, so that implies that to the author sexism was wrong

hat a lot of people don't realize is that the Greeks didn't believe myths were literal so when the Gods make a "Mistake" it's not the Gods themselves committing these acts but rather just stories. every tale has a few different meanings and lessons behind it.... however this one has always been a struggle for me..... at first I thought the lesson may have been " the mother trying to stop fate .... but fate is destined from the beginning "...... but other lessons just don't seem to add up here... like we could assume that being prideful or boasting is bad... but there isn't enough story line focus on the trophy at all.... so im still rather lost within any meaning here at all...

In my opinion, is that there´s a reason for a fate. Like, by trying to defy the fate, the queen was actually made it worse. If her baby died that night, she would grieve but it was only the baby who died. But by trying to keep him alive, four persons ended up died and she died in extreme agony knowing that her son could commit such terrible act.
