Antique stores and or malls, flea markets are all expensive if they get lots of traffic which is mostly only on weekends. I have consistently found vinyl sellers asking 30-40% more than a record is worth, for years. Part of the reason is the high cost of having a booth, but still, this is about volume selling unless your records are worth at least $50 each.

I press records for a living at an independent pressing plant. It's pretty easy to explain why NEW albums cost more. 1. The cost of shipping domestic and international has gone up. Most pressing plants in the US use pvc made in Indonesia and has to be shipped to the plant along with all the other materials used to make the record as in stampers, jackets, labels, inner sleeves, rolls of plastic to shrinkwrap. Once the records are boxed up. They typically have to ship 2-3 more times before you see them at your local record stores or delivered to your door. 2. The cost of living has gone up. Most pressing plants are in pretty cool cities and towns which cost more to live in. If you want to keep the person you just spent at least 6 months training how to use a record press you need to pay them as the skilled labor they are. I've been pressing for almost 3 years and I'm still learning things about the machines almost weekly. 3. Everything is more expensive than it was than when you were a kid just getting into collecting and it's probably going to get worse with any new tariffs being that the main raw material used in making records is imported.
@audiophileman70479 сағат бұрын
If you adjust for inflation, basic new vinyl records are around the same price as back in the day. In some cases, the records made today actually have better sound quality. Audiophile records are around the same price adjusted for inflation as well. It doesn't sound like Melinda is talking about newly made reissues and issues. Everything she showed was vintage vinyl pressed back in the day. The prices she encountered are excessive and really just crazy.

Hi Melinda, I am a record collector and seller in Australia, I am lucky enough to be travelling around the world this year with my wife and visiting many record stores and markets ( driving her crazy sometimes).I have been finding grails for myself but also thought I would try a bit of an experiment and buy what i think are harder to find records in Australia, overseas releases, variants and the like ,things we just don’t see much of at home. Record collecting in Australia when you get to the stage of having all your base albums you want can be very limited ,our availability of records is just not the same as overseas . So i have a stall in an antiques mall ( oh no you say) and i am going to sell these albums there, so i have to take into account my costs and put a price on them that i think is REALISTIC, fair and reflects the fact that i think they are collectible and the people in the know will recognise this. As a record buyer i know the frustration of seeing the same old records over and over again so i am hoping to offer something different,it is a great feeling when you say I haven’t seen that one before or hey you rarely see this. I hope this works ,it will be interesting to see if I can get that balance between purchase and sale price right Love your channel ,first time commenting but this one really hit the mark at the moment All the best Ian PS. Enjoyed the video. Prices at antique stores are usually higher as they are looking for the uneducated buyers. The people who are just looking for a memory will spend more money then items are worth. So many new sellers still jumping on the record selling gig that have no idea of how to grade and/or price. I see this on Whatnot! with people finding records in storage units and garage sales, then trying to flip without even really looking at the records. Good job on this video and a good subject. And YES, I have seen this kind of ridiculous overpricing at certain antique and collectibles stores. A couple of years ago, I questioned the owner of a collectibles store on a handful of original Beatles 45's in good shape but nowhere near VG-Mint. When this owner told me he had "looked the prices up on eBay", I pointed out to him (on my phone) that the eBay prices he was quoting were picturing excellent condition vinyl with VG to VG+ condition picture sleeves. He wasn't going to budge. Well, I wasn't going to budge either. These 4 singles with pic sleeves at the price he wanted, $375, should have been in the $80-$100 range, and I am being generous at that. While in the store, I also noted that he had some Beatles memorabilia way over-priced also. In talking to this owner, I got the clear message that he was not very knowledgeable about vinyl records at all and felt that just because it was "The Beatles", he could slap prices on the items and just sell them. I ran into a very similar situation at a huge flea market recently. In the case of the flea market, the owner of the goods listened to me and said, "okay, make me an offer" (Beatles 1964 Topps cards). I did and he did sell me the cards. Again, the major issue: condition. The cards were VG - BUT - his original asking price was based on mint.

Many antique dealers are scavengers who pay very little for their inventory, and then price it to the max. In multi-vendor antique malls, you see wacky stuff all of the time, not just records. They heard records are worth something, so they assume that goes for any record. You'll see their little box full of albums where you can grab your Jim Nabors, Pat Boone and Johnny Mathis records for $10 each or even more. Want some Tennessee Ernie Ford, or some Englebert? They've got 'em! Even the charity shops can have crazy prices on things. I've seen hacked up, moldy, dirty Beatles records with price tags that had me laughing out loud. Their ignorance works both ways though, because I've picked up some rare and obscure albums that they sometimes under-value. You can't know everything! On the flip side I see from online posts that although the chancers may have priced their Beatles, Fleetwood Mac etc lps to silly amounts they sometimes way underprice an obscure collectable record so still worth checking these antique sellers. Regards Nigel

Unfortunately I'm not surprised. Buyer Beware. I've been in a few of these types of stores in Maine and found similar prices. I checked the vinyl and most were only VG. THE FUNNY thing is eventually they probably will sell at their asking prices. Great topic..keep rockN!

Great video, that was jaw-dropping to watch! I too have encountered some insulting prices on records at antique stores (one of the reasons I rarely ever even LOOK at records whenever I'm visiting an antique store), but nothing that compares to what you found, that's mind boggling, not to mention infuratingly insulting. Hard to fully discern whether or not that is simply a case of them literally not having a clue, and shoooting from the gut on their pricing (and failing miserably at doing so), or if they are actually fully aware of the true value, and they are intentionally trying to take advantage of people, and by an outrageous margin, to boot! Either way, completely unacceptable. Like you, I too wouldn't spend a penny there! Hopefully in time, they'll come to their senses, but I suppose time will tell. For THEIR sake, I hope they do, so that a bunch of records can start finding good homes at fair and reasonable prices. 🙂

WOW! That is incredible. Gee, looks like I will put my copy of the Bee Gees live album for sale at $200 and undercut the competition. lol! I have to say, I have not seen those kind of prices in a shop BUT I have to say, Discogs prices are going through the roof. Thanks for sharing this, my friend! P.S. You are SPOT ON about the Jeff Beck MOFI title. It is the BEST I have ever heard that album. I had a defective album so I reached out to MOFI and they sent a replacement VERY quickly (and got to me in Canada pretty fast). Just a heads up - and I am sure someone has mentioned this already - your last two videos only have audio coming out of the Left Channel (nothing in the Right). Just have a glance at your mic/mixer/interface connections before you film the next video. If you need help, message me and I can help! :)

Although you mean’t no disrespect to the owner of the antique shop, you’ve reminded us of the famous quote “Buyer Beware”. Granted, common sense plays a part here, and a simple quick search on the internet would verify the price as being proper or outrageous. That “rat trap” box of Lp’s you discovered will sadly catch a rat sooner or later. Sad to say! Thank you for sharing this event! You may have saved countless lives now! 😊👏❤️👍

After seeing one of your videos, I went to Discogs and found 4 factory sealed and just opened vinyl from 2020, 2014 and was pleasantly surprised with $8, $2, $2 and $1.50. Listened on YT and enjoyed all. Bundled deal for $19.50 incl/ship. I may have said, but someone had the old Goodwill grab bag stuff which were all left overs ($3 for ten LP etc ) and wouldn't come off their $5 each price. Much of them were similar condition to ones I tossed because they were destroyed.

Simply outrageous! I do have that live Bee Gees album and in much better shape than the one for $300.00 and I paid a grand total of $9.00! No point in confronting the owner and I don't believe even people with deep pockets would be fooled into paying those prices. On a different note, if you saw a painting, or anything else, you liked but thought the price too stiff, you can always make an offer for a price you think it's fair, especially if a good piece with good framing and so on. They can say no and then just walk away. I do that constantly and, more often than not, those dealers will take a lower, sometimes much lower price just to get rid of inventory and make a buck or two.

I agree with this, there are a few antique shops near me and some of them have these kind of prices. I wonder where they come up with the numbers as most are $5, $10, sometimes $20 records at most and they have all of them priced at $40, $75 and up. It's bizarre. One store has a lot of common $2 or $3 Joan Baez records priced at $50 each. I feel the same way as you, it makes me doubt the price tags they have on other items in the shop.

Places like that store really have no idea how to price records. The saddest part is someone will pay those prices because they themselves don’t know any better. I sort of get the Beatles albums being overpriced because it’s the Beatles and most people think every Beatles album is worth a fortune. But I gotta say that Bee Gees album really surprised me. I have seen that one going up in price in recent years, not sure why, but I have seen it as a $25-30 album. I have that album, got it a couple years back at the Goodwill store, excellent condition, white label promo even, I paid $1 for it!

I bought Tom Pettys Hard Promises second hand about 5 years ago for $5.00 (still has the sticker on the cover). It has the custom label, lyric inner sleeve, poster and is a first press mastered at Sterling with "We love you J.L." etched in the dead wax on side 1. I never look for the posters because I don't care about them, and at $5 with really minty vinyl I would have bought in anyway. It was only 5 minutes ago that I realized the poster was in there.

That is crazy M! This is one of the main reasons I never step into Antique/Flea markets anymore. There are some who over price bc they know vinyl is back, but have not clue about values of various pressing...but MORE SO...what I think these people hope for is someone like grandma or grandpa who doesn't collect vinyl but wants to buy their granddaughter who does collect an awesome birthday gift and they think "Oh wow, an awesome vintage Beatles records for $125 would make her so happy". It's old and probably rare". THAT is what they are waiting for.

Antique stores are usually the most expensive places to buy any collectible. Expect to pay more but not what you encountered. People who sell collectible things are often just in it for the money. Many unknowledgeable dealers sell collectibles in antique stores and don't know what they're selling. They've heard that vinyl records are popular collectibles, and the opportunity to make money is really there. Sometimes they put these crazy high prices on records and hope that saps will come along and buy them. A few probably do sell to the inexperienced, impulsive buyers. When they don't sell, they start lowering the prices. It really is annoying. When you see crazy record prices, it's just time to move on. I can't recall crazy prices like that in an antique store, but I regularly see crazy prices for records on eBay. 😲

So right about antique stores (as opposed to actual 2nd hand record stores) fancifully asking pretentious price$. For example, I've seen pretty scuffed and faded copies of Abbey Road and a non-zipper Sticky Fingers, albums which were hardly obscure rarities back in the day, go for upwards of $65:00 AUD + . As we would say here in the great southern land, ''Tell 'em they're dreamin!".

I saw this, video, Melinda, and I just said, “Wow!” And somehow, I sense a little sarcasm in your voice…Am I right? You know, I have seen sellers who price their albums this way, and I just keep on walking…OTOH, if they want to price their albums that way, I have no problem trying to haggle with them on price…I’ll casually slip in that I have over 15,000 LP’s and that I know what I’m talking about! I love pointing out, like I did the other day in one of my local antique shops, that the $75.00 copy of “Introducing The Beatles” they were selling was found by moi in even better condition, still in the Sears shrink wrap, for 50 cents at the thrift shop only a few doors down…I don’t know what they thought about that, but I know I didn’t buy their copy and maybe it gets these guys a thinking a little bit…And I’m the guy who successfully haggled down the price of a $100 Dual turntable in a different antique shop to $45.00, considering the work that would be involved in rehabbing it…It also helped that I knew they’d had the Dual in the shop for several weeks…When antique sellers have such high prices in their shops, you should tell ‘em, “I really like your museum here! I’m almost afraid to touch anything!” and then tell ‘em, “I’m almost afraid to buy anything…It seems sooo expensive that I’m afraid I might break/ruin/destroy (fill in the blank here) if I brought it home…” See, I’m not afraid to look, and if the prices aren’t to my liking, I’m not afraid to walk out the door…You know what you do? Go back to that same antique shop in a year and see how many of those albums are STILL there! Tell ‘em, “Yeah, I was in here last year looking at these albums and I see you still have a lot of the same ones…Have you sold any at all? Then ask if they’d be willing to budge on price, as I’m sure they would love to move product…If they say the prices are firm and all sales are final, then I tell them, “Well, maybe I’ll be back in again next year….” and then promptly walk out! If they really wanted to sell, they’d change their tune really quickly…Sometimes I wonder if these sellers even want to sell anything…Maybe they put their prices up so high, but then tell their spouses, “Hey, I’m trying to sell this stuff! I don’t know why anyone’s not buying!” Uh-huh…Ohhhh-kayyy! Suuuure! In any case, I should note that I bought my copy of The Beatles’ “Rarities” for $7.99 from my local record store, “Hard Promises” was $6.00 at a local antique mall here and I picked up a great copy of “Truth” when I bought a former co-worker’s classic rock collection…He sold me 250 jazz and rock records in three plastic totes…$250.00 for the whole kit and kaboodle, so about $1.00 a record! Not a bad deal, if I say so myself…This was about 20-25 years ago, but it was a very good deal at the time and I’m not complaining! He had lots of Rolling Stones, some Grateful Dead, plenty of prog rock and jazz, so I was happy! Sometimes, the best deals are the ones where you can buy in bulk…Hopefully, all the antique shops in your area are not like that, but I’ve learned a long time ago that if they don’t want my business, they can keep their “junk”..,£I will say that the shops that ARE more reasonable in their pricing are the shops I tend to buy MORE vinyl from, not less…So, if anything, I would find some places in your area that are fair and reasonable and keep buying from them…Never give in to these inflated prices…Unless it’s so super rare that you might never see it again in the wild, you’ll probably find that same album down the line at a MUCH better price…The moral of the story…Don’t buy the first copy you see, unless it’s cheap enough…If you’re patient, better deals will come! And I’m living proof of that!

Hi Melinda! Another excellent video! The Y&T Beatles album is marked $175.! That looks like a "7" and not a "2". My stereo Y&T, I bought new, and it has the gold record medallion with the black and rainbow circle label. I do have a mono copy, which I acquired in a collection, and there is no doubt it is an original copy. I have seen this album usually overpriced for the last 20 years. I have had a 2nd-state cover album offered to me, twice, for $100. I didn't buy them as they were too rich for me. Remember, there are atleast 25K 2nd-states floating around out there. Your Beatles "Rarities" album is a promo copy. If not marked "promotion" with a WLP record label, Capitol just punched a large hole in an upper corner. I have an "Abbey Road" LP with the hole. This is what we got at the radio station. Capitol didn't really do white or yellow promo labels of Beatles records past the mid-to-late 60's. Early Apple 45's were seldom issued with promo indicators on the label. Not issued as a regular record, Capitol pressed a WLP 45, "Dialog From Let It Be" with an ABKCO imprint. In an antique mall, with independent sellers under one roof, the mall owners don't set the prices, the section owners do. Often the store is allowed to maybe give a 10% discount, but with the prices you found, that is way too little. Remember, the section owner has to pay rent and even maybe a commision, on top of that. In an antique store, that owns everything under one roof, they expect you to ask for a discount, on anything. There are multiple published price guides available. Remember, they are "guides". I am an acknowledged contributor to "Rockin' Records". That publication is based on actual sales prices and they don't publish arbitrary prices. You can download the guides to your smartphone and always have them with you. If you see prices in stores out of the published ranges, you know they either don't know how to price records or they are going for the tourist trade. If you see that they have some current price guides, then they are price-gouging. It is good to inform the store owners of this and tell them that you are not buying other items in their store, because those set prices may be gouging too. One stand-alone used record store owner I knew(he is now retired), let it slip in a published article that he marked the prices up 5 x what he paid. His prices were set in the middle of the price range, adjusting a little for condition or more for rareness. He would always entertain offers. A record in the $5. to $10. range would be priced at $7.50. He probably paid $1. or less for it. Oh, and they prefer to give you store credit over cash.

You are right. It was a "7" which means they were asking $175 for that record. Insane. This was a small but very nice antique store. It wasn't a situation where they had a lot of vendors renting out a space. The owners should have done their research. Pretty crazy. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

Melinda - making this comment before watching and basing this comment on the title of this episode only. I've seen people asking for outrageous prices for common albums and I think they are either uninformed or just seeing if they get a bite. If someone wants to pay $250.00 for a Capitol "Meet the Beatles" that has been played to s4it that seller hit the jackpot. Don't scoff, there are people out there that still fall for that email about a deposed Prince that is coming into $20 mil and will give you 5 mil if you help him out.

as a long time picker and record buyer, I know a lot of antique store owners and people that rent antique mall booths, none of them have any sort of knowledge as to price and condition of records, they will buy stuff at estate sales that i pass on, that is totally not worth buying due to condition or title. worse yet i see lots of people that are new to the game and they think they can start selling records, the prices they charge are insanity.

You have to wonder what the store owner got those "super rare" records for haha. He probably didn't pay anything for them or maybe just a couple of bucks on most of them. He obviously didn't do any research or just was trying to see what might sell knowing better? I was thinking the same exact thing you mentioned. I would be very hesitant to buy anything, especially expensive items, from a place like that not knowing if they're jacking up the price super high on something we don't really know the value of ourselves. It's a shame. $300 for something that's easily obtainable for probably $3 to $10 is crazy :-) I'd say this is definitely a case of buyer beware! Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

Its crazy that Hard Promises gors for that much since Tom Petty fought to keep the retail price down back in the day.

I WAS SHOUTING AT MY TV MELINDA 😂 The only record store in our city for a while had similar prices😮 🤦♂️I think they’ve made most of their money off Blu-ray & DVD movies. It’s weird that they never heard of diskcogs at least, I don’t care if Records are in the greatest quality personally. Two sides of the spectrum, I bought the Beatles rarity for five dollars at Daybreak Records in Seattle Fremont neighborhood in similar condition. Same store I also got many of those same Tom Petty records you showed for $10 or less from 2015-present. That was a few years ago so he would be selling them for more now. And there was one antique shop, In Snohomish neighboring town from where I live in Everett, Washington home of the big Boeing plant everyone’s favorite company LOL 😅 It’s basically an antique village of shops, I found a Foghat record autographed by the whole band for six dollars 😮 in this situation, they had no idea what they had. Humans are weird and how they price Records is even weirder, but all depends on markets understanding of prices. And like my friend RJ says that Daybreak Records in Seattle “I’m running a record store not a freaking museum”.
