A darker one is more intriguing and triggers more emotions in us, which is basis of a good song. An emotional piece will resonate much more strongly in the mind than that is cheerful and evokes no other feelings - it flies by without thinking about it. Think what moments from your life do you remember the most? I think the ones that caused a lot of emotions in you (the first time of something, the loss of someone close to you, etc.)
