Mellie Grant - A Woman in Love

We don't get to see that side of Mellie Grant often. She almost never acknowledges to herself, to her husband, or to us that she is actually in love with her husband. She makes us all believe she is a political animal, which she sure is, but there's a soft spot behind that tough exterior. There's a woman in love scorned by her husband, by life. There's a woman trying to mend a dead marriage, and she almost always fails because, whether we like it or not, it seems like they do not belong together. But, nevertheless, when we see that sweet side of her, we can't help but fall in love with her all over again.

Mellie is one of the most honest characters on this show. Yes, she's scheming & manipulative, but she is unapologetic about what she is trying to accomplish. Bellamy Young is flawless in this role.

Mellie does love fitz. But if you watch he is always mean and rude to her, especially when he misses Olivia. Millie may be power hungry but that doesn't make her a bad person.

I love the second scene. Thanks for uploading it. You see glimpses of what made the marriage work for a time. They liked each other a lot. Their shared intelligence, the fact that she gets some things better than he does (when she corrects him about the nuances of hunting). Fitz loves Mellie, as a friend, as a companion and a mother of his children. He's just not in love with Mellie, and probably never was. Shame on both of them for staying together for too long.

I don't doubt that Fitz was in love with Mellie once upon a time. I think she lost sight of what was important and he became turned off by her. He cares about her but by no means is he still in love with her.

Fitz loves Mellie for sure. He's just not in love with her. When i see this side of her i almost forget how much of a viper she can be. Venomous to those (including Fitz) who can get in the way of her future political career. It's this side of her that Fitz sees every day and it's why he's fallen out of love with her. That is if he was/they were ever in love with each other to begin with...waiting on Shonda to reveal how these two ever came to be.

i do believe mellie loves fitz..maybe not the usual kind of love or a woman should..but she is different..she is ambitious, feisty, manipulative and such..which in all cases olivia is too..scheming and such..yes fitz is in love with olivia as so olivia..i thought at first ill be jumping up and down for this pair but with mellie..and her role..how she is portrayed..hmm very well done..and thus, i decided to stick with mellie..she stands on her round thast for sure! young is great in her role!

In her own words, " We were never.... but we were always partners & we were always friends." They were never in love with each other. She knew it, & knows it & thought that was good enough ...until he fell in love. With the baby clothes she sees the old times when 'they were friends/partners', while she was in love with the gifts from the Queen ... She just doesn't have it in her to understand that love is bliss & cannot be faked or replaced by prestige & power. Not everyone is capable of love.

Ok people keep in mind Mellie never loved Fitz. Their marriage wasn't based off love. She never said she loved her husband. She was sold to him in an arranged marriage. Not once the entire 1-5 seasons did they tell each other they loved each other. Fitz only told Olivia. She always said they were a team. Remember it was a dead marriage. What she loved was the power and the benefits of what she got out of it. It was a steppingstone to what she really wanted and that was to be president herself.

In the end....Fitz will be happy with his wife and Liv will find happiness elsewhere. There is no happily ever after when the love is built on a lie. I like Fitz and Olivia together as well but the reality remains that he is married to Mellie. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!

I love to hate Mellie though there a re a few times I empathise with her. That being said, I think from this clip @0:37 it's clear they were never in love but they were partners and friends. That was reiterated again this last episode 2*19 during the Fitz/Mellie moment when it was revealed that Big Jery arranged the political marriage between them. Mellie is screwed up in the head and Bellamy Young deserves an Emmy for her portrayal of her.
