I've been trying to learn secondary dominant chords from various people on KZbin while they play them on their piano. It's been a struggle trying to wrap my head around it, and I was wishing someone could teach this to me while using FL. You saved the day, man. Thank you!!!

I've been watching your chord videos all day. You break it down so well and it's easy to learn esp for someone who has zero music theory knowledge like myself so, thank you!

What scale do you recommend to play during the secondary dominant? Still the original tonic scale or can you add whatever out of key note is in the secondary dominant for more flavor?

You might wanna watch it again. You don’t pick a scale for the secondary dominant. You pick a non tonic, major or minor chord in the scale you made the progression in. From the fifth degree of the chord that you pick, you build a dominant 7 chord. But if you’re asking what chord to build them off of, they sound best with the minor chords, they sound good going to either a major or minor 4 chord, they can be build off of other V chords too.

@@MelloDeeBeats No I get it, I was asking scales for the melody. Do you just stick to the original diatonic scale and it will still sound decent with out of key notes of the secondary dominants?

@@user-eu4vj2gs1z oh my bad. The easiest way to do it is to use the major scale of the chord you picked OR base it around the notes in the secondary dominant chord. For the secondary dominant chord, it’s always major so even if the target chord is a minor, you still want to play notes from the major scale of the root note of the target chord. But the passing chord won’t drag too long in most cases so there won’t be too much you can do so as far as if you base it around the secondary dominant chord notes, use the root or the fifth (of that chord) as the starting point for that melodic line while it’s playing.
