The footage of McCartney doing the pitch bend downwards on "going to" in Strawberry Fields confirms my suspicion that it's the electric guitar setting on the Mellotron Mk II (as featured in The Kinks' Phenomenal Cat) rather than Harrison using a bottleneck. This comes out very clearly in the Anthology version, that has some clicking and wow and flutter that a Fender could never produce - but a Tron could!

Today's all-digital keyboards can sound fantastic. But there's something about the Tron that's never quite been matched electronically. I always know it when I'm hearing it. Know what I mean?

Yea, and you could load different tapes into it giving it different "samples" to use, plus pitch was adjustable on-the-fly, really noticeable in the opening of "Strawberry fields"..

all the suggestions r ok, but the Beatles were the first to used the Mellotron and everybody else copied them like in everything else. Looks, instruments, 4 members in almost all bands, etc.
