The photos @5:55 are from around 1980, before she started growing out his locs. This was after his shaved mohawk look that he had in 1979. The look he's most known for is from 1982. He cut his locs in 1983 and by 1985 he had to top locs then he let his hair grow out again until his death.

Basquiat and Madonna were more than buddies, she lived with him while they were dating. Madonna said when she broke up with him he took back the paintings he gave her and painted them black.

Jean Michel Basquiat is someone I only found out about through a gifted book entitled 'Widow Basquiat' by Jennifer Clement. I'm so happy you featured this artist. His locs are talked about in the book but only in passing, as the book is more of a collection of poetic memoirs written from the perspective of a live-in lover. It's an easy read that gives a very colorful and inspiring look into his creatively romantic addiction to art, people, drugs and social discord. I think you'd like the read.
