I'm in my 70s, have been enjoying classical music for 50 years, came across the Ravel and the Shostakovich in more recent years, but the latter, in particular, has a tenderness and sense of anticipation that really hits that special place. Hands down, it has to be Beethoven's Emperor concerto, second movement. The dispirited but inward looking melody that evokes loss or regret, the slow but steady tempo of the piano that then transitions seamlessly into the 3rd movement bursting forth with hope and resolve. Truly one of his masterpieces.

Wow Kim. .. this is incredibly special . . . I have listened twice through and will now start to go deeper with the links that you have sent . . . You picked 7 immortal pieces / melodies and I bow to you. . . I often ponder what makes a timeless melody . .. certainly in the classical realm but really in all music . .. what is it about the arrangement of single notes linked together that works so perfectly from time to time . . .as in these pieces you present. .. , rhythmic patterns hand in glove with the notes. phrases, harmonies and orchestration .. . some phrases are divine. . . a gift to all of us that just seems to be gifted to a composer and then it comes out of the ether and is present .. . in that ethereal way that music is . .. it is there but it is not .. . it is concrete but lighter than a feather. . . .it lives in a strange dimension that we all feel and sense but which is so fleeting .. . there is a galaxy many light years out that is humming at B flat. . . 57 octaves below middle C. . i love that .. . music is ubiquitous and possible all of existence is manifested from it. . . thanks for sharing these melodies .. . your channel is treasure. . . as are you .. . thanks friend. . jeff

Wanted to write the same! I feel like it's the key that's often picked for warmth and intimacy. After a dark, stormy movement, it always feels like a ray of light, especially in Beethoven's brilliant use of it a semitone above the expected key (E flat), a relationship that Grieg also borrowed in his own slow movement (D flat major after A minor). (Although Rachmaninoff 2 has the same key relationship (C minor/ E major), he starts the second movement from C and modulates to E major, so it's a different effect).

The 2nd movement to Rach 2 is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written. ❤️

I am always amused when people say Beethoven was not a melodist. Your "Emperor" clip, as well as many of the slow movements of his sonatas, symphonies, and concertos, say otherwise.
@MelodiousHeart15 жыл бұрын
People who say that Beethoven was not a melodist obviously haven't heard his music in depth. He wrote so many pieces with beautiful melodies, as you mentioned. Thank you for watching!

I would add: Brahms piano concert 2 - 3rd movement opening. Prokofiev piano concerto 3 - 3rd movement - main theme reprise. Liszt concerto 1 - Db major andante section.

The title is perfectly descriptive of these musical pieces. They really do make the heart ache for some unknown longing; which brings to my mind this scripture: _Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!_ _9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness._ I think this explains why many of the most famous musical pieces through history have been spiritual in their conception. Rach's 2nd piano concerto is my favorite.

Horowitz playing Rachmaninov concert0 3 (1952 recording) or Opus 32 No. 12 or 32 No 5 are the most sublime. Valentina Lisitsa is also good on Rachmaninov (both Ukrainian greats), but Horowitz remains the pianist with the best expression ever.

I’m biased and definitely prefer the Russian composers, so Shosty being #1 was a nice surprise. I also think the 2nd Mvt from Tchaikovsky’s 2nd piano concerto with the bonus violin/cello solos is exquisitely beautiful. The “original version” of course (which is 14-17 minutes long), not the shorter simplified version edited by Solti

It had been a lifelong ambition to visit Beethoven,s grave and i wanted to do it in winter, dont know why, and nature obliged with a nice snowfall. I will never forget that moment.
