I am a professor at a university in the US, and in a city where there are lots of Telugu students. I have seen an increase in 'Obsessive fanaticism' towards a person(movie hero primarily) and a caste. At the risk of sounding like a stereotype, this behavior is shown only from students that are coming from two places. Students that are from other places in the Telugu states don't give a damn about it. Call me a stereotype but this is a fact. I am a Telugu person as well and has seen this behavior only after moving to the US. Here are some of my experiences: During a meetup, one of the students came to me and mentioned that he is from so and so caste(need I say what caste it is?), and asked me to contact him if I need anything to be taken care of through the secretariat. I am shocked. I didn't ask for it and he wanted to show off. In a gathering during my students years, some students tried to convince me that a particular movie actor(again, should I mention the name?) is great. My exposure to this particular actor is minimal, and I just kept nodding my head trying to change the conversation or get out of there. I did not utter a single word. One student got upset that he is not able to convince me, and started shouting the actors' name before banging his head into a wall. Another shocking moment for me. Why do you have to rub your views onto others? There are several other incidents like this, and my Non-Telugu friends avoid these kind of creatures, including me. When we have a meetup, we would like to know each other- not expect you to rub your caste and fanaticism onto us.
