No, he wasn't naive or foolish. He was being HIMSELF. What Melon is, is very rare. And I don't mean hybridly, I mean MENTALLY. Most people will never even MEET IN PASSING someone like Melon. Seeing one like him and understanding immediately what he is is not a common skill. Legoshi didn't understand what Melon was, and there was no way he would have known. He genuinely just thought he was like Riz, confused, in pain, messed up, but savable. After all... who EXPECTS to meet a thing like Melon, something most people think only exists in scary movies and fiction. So he abided by his nature and reached out. He wanted to help, because he didn't know Melon was beyond help. He didn't know what Melon really was. Melon then TAUGHT Legoshi what he really was.

And I might point out... up until Melon, _Legoshi's chosen approach had worked._ Sure he got beaten and battered and hurt, but at the end of the day he _reached_ them all with his compassion and good nature, was able to ultimately resolve things peacefully without major bloodshed on his part. And he resolved things with all of them using exactly what he tried with Melon. So why wouldn't he try the same with Melon? It wasn't naivety or stupidity. He just didn't know what Melon was. He had no way to know. He was just being who he is.

This is perhaps what finally makes the Beastars world more realistic. Some folk aren't just misunderstood, needing help, or inherently good people yearning to show their true selves, they're just bastards. Plain and simple. Too many works of fiction try to avoid portraying genuine psychopaths, but they do exist, and pretending that everyone just needs a redemption arc kind of destroys the credibility of good fiction.

I would say Scarecrow and Joker. Two-Face ar least gives a chance to folks who are not his targets and Black Mask is far too unhinged with the social masks theme to really stay subtle Melon has the Joker's savvy in criminal operations and sense of showmanship (though the clown uses fear and better rewards for his mooks to follow him. Melon mostly banks on fear and despair...) and Dr Crane's sadism and psychological expertise to have citizens in need trust him...

I sincerely like how this shows the dangers of idealism. Riz was a kid. It was obvious he was wracked with guilt and he wasn't trying to devour dozens of people. But Melon? He's an adult. He's a serial killer. He doesn't feel remorse and it's obvious from his actions. Talk-No-Jutsu isn't going to work here.

Such a suave, whimsical polarazing persona. Everything about him is so great Melon is just so good in anime, they actually managed to make him even more deranged, psychotic, and smarter than his manga counterpart, also he doesn't feel out of place anymore. He was being teased since Season 2, and this is the climax. My favorite part of Beastars is Melon, and I hope Orange fixes the issues manga presented after CH 140 til 196 So far they are doing PERFECT job in his portrayal (His VA, his mannerisms, or even simple hand movements) Literally everything is spot on

Legoshi was also perhaps thinking that because this is what he did with Riz, it would work on Melon too. He just couldn't fathom that Melon - unlike Riz - is a legit, hardened criminal who has absolutely zero guilt over what he's done. I also think another major part is how he legitimately views Melon as akin to his future offspring and to admit that Melon is beyond all help is to admit that he could potentially produce a similar individual with Haru. Considering Legoshi already has a lot of insecurities about his relationship with Haru as it is, the idea that his kids could be as messed up as Melon due to their heritage is a whole load of additional pressure to take on.

Spoiler for non-manga readers: I still wonder how Melon would've reacted if he truely knew what happend to his father, that he was still alive but just afraid and ran from the situation, starting a new life. But as it stands, he is beyond help, he is torn between herbivore and carnivore, between being prey and predator, he can't taste food, his mother was strange, she became a psycho after his father left her, so much she sexually abused melon, his father gone without a trace and he himself did not had the nices childhood as people easily guessed he was a hybrid considering his mom is a leopard and he looking so much more like a gazelle when she ever left the apartment. With taking no joy in food or sex, he could only kill.

@@DonPetexX Melon and Legoshi have a show down that eventually ends with Legoshi winning and after a herbivore sees what the black market does a carnivore smashes a store up and tells the other carnivores they need to protect the herbivores from seeing the evil of the black market and then both herbivores and carnivores destroy the black market in that town and Melon shoots him sled with two bullets that are supposed to kill him….they don’t because we see him later alive and well and and basically everything goes back to normal also we will be hearing about the predator and herbivore war in the past that mention a wall that ended the war and said something that was literally just “you carnivores can eat fish we ocean creatures are okay with being eaten” overall I love the story but a lot of things don’t get answered and many concepts are just dropped so I do hope the anime changes a few things not to say I hate the series of course it’s awesome but most manga readers hate the ending.
