@@DarkAdonisVyers In Edelgard's case it's definitely knowingly. I mean you can't plot to kill some of their members and expect them to not get pissed. As for TWSITD, they likely figured Edelgard's actual feelings on what they were doing didn't matter. They thought she had no choice but to let them do what they wanted. So it threw them for a loop when they found out too late that she had lines and they had already crossed them.

What a masterpiece... the ones that were being forced to dance around were in fact... us... Which means, they don't pay attention to Edelgard, which bites them back.

It's pretty cool how all of Edelgard's battle dialogue with Solon, Kronya, and the Death Knight subtly hints at her secret identity as the Flame Emperor. They basically stop just short of going, "Hey wait, I thought you were on our team!"

What I don't like about Edelgard is that she goes "hurr durr should've killed Byleth" with solon and after 2 chapters she wants him to come to the capital together. Like wtf? One moment you want to kill him and the next to fuck him smh. And the game never explains it either, when Byleth joins Edelgard in post time skip his role is to just be her yes man, he isn't angry that she basically killed Jeralt, she doesn't explain the whole Flame Emperor shit and her being an ally of those who slither in the dark and Byleth NEVER questions her, he was so angry at Kronya and when he comes to the realization its Edelgard the game refuses to acknowledge it. What a fucking shame

I did read the direct Japan translation and it does mean more in less characters. In Japan it’s “Why must you reconquer what you can’t take back? Why must you kill off my soldiers and your soldiers if you will lose anyway” That would be a lot more in English to get that across. The “Must you contribute to reconquer? Must you continue to kill in retaliation” gets the same message across in similar to less amount of text boxes and such (Voice acting is pretty tight on how long they can go on) That and also I think they tried to be very rhetoric to what Dimitri said so, it is supposed to be a Reverse Uno Card on why is he doing this if he’s gonna lose anyway. Which Edelgard says multiple times she has no idea why generals still choose to fight if it just means they’ll be sending their soldiers to die without a cause.

I’d argue that those are two different Edelgard’s. One has Byleth to act as an emotional and mental anchor for her to keep true to her morals and hang onto her humanity. While the other does not have Byleth to act as those things, so she looses her humanity so she can claim victory at any cost. So I don’t think it’s fair to blame a functioning and stable Edelgard for the actions of an Edelgard who is not.

That being said though, I think if it was properly translated it would have hit home with everyone. Personally when I was playing that chapter I felt the same sense of "this is foolish, Dmitri is just being used" (i played CF first). Despite whether Dmitri is bloodthirsty or not the theme of wasted life felt like it was handled very well in that chapter. Everything from the music, the atmosphere, dedue and the beasts. The direct translation is a simple line yes but lines dont need to elaborate when so many of the other story elements are on point here. Less is sometimes more.

Parker MacNeil, Crimson Flower ended up being first route, too. I thought it was a bad line when I first heard it, but I kinda liked it. It brought down the tension because I ended up laughing a wrote it off as one bad convo in an over all good game. Later I came across the Japanese line and thought that was a bit of a fail, too, but by that point I had abandoned my post as an Ed-girl stand (yeah I was one for a bit), and got to liking the rest of the cast a bit more.

Why is she wrong? After playing every path I was left with the impression that no one was simply right or wrong. They all had an incomplete picture and acted on their personal feelings and experiences, so of course the outcome was imperfect each time. But she wasn't anymore wrong than the others. I feel like some people take her being the first to act as a reason to blame her for everything, but the situation wasn't that simple to begin with.

Dimitri fought to quell rebellions in his own lands when he was a teenager. The Alliance is described as constantly invaded by Almyra, and the nobles are fighting among themselves. Ignatz and Raphael's paralogue is about that and shows that the nobles are murdering people, so it is a matter of life and death. The Empire was invaded by Dagda and Brigid only a few years before the game, Petra says that Caspar's father killed hers during a battle. There was also the Insurrection of the seven which destabilized the Empire and allowed for Those Who Slither to take power. Edelgard's vision is based on an incomplete truth about Rhea, but one that she couldn't have learned and that isn't the basis of her ideology. Knowing the truth about Rhea and her race would not have changed her mind because Rhea would have still lied and the Church of Seiros would have still encouraged the existence of the crest system. Rhea did lie about the History of Fodlan, she did lie about herself and her people and hid her true form, and she made up a whole religion based on a lie since the Goddess was long dead. But even then, what Edelgard is mainly against is the nobility and the crest system, which are described as srewed up and the source of the suffering of many. She is also fighting against corruption, which includes the Church and TWSITD, since the former built its cult on lies and kept at it through the ages while the other manipulated to take power and sow chaos, and caused many tragedies. Edelgard being the aggressor doesn't make her the villain. Or if I follow this train of thoughts, then Rhea is a villain for waging war against Nemesis to avenge her people? Dimitri's ancestor was a villain for rebelling against the Empire to create the Kingdom, which therefore should not exist? Leicester should not exist either since it was created after not one, but two wars? If you consider that war is wrong and unjustifiable, you can't just say so for one war, but for every one of them. In conclusion, since the Kingdom and the Alliance both should not exist, neither Dimitri nor Claude are justified to defend their homes, am I right? That is exactly how it goes if we decide to say that war is wrong and leave it at that, which is stupid, because we're ignoring the context of the story and that opposite sides wouldn't have budged for a myriad of reasons, leading to an unavoidable conflict. Edelgard declared war on an unjust system and a cult that kept it going with lies. Rhea created that cult and lied for centuries to preserve what remained of her race. Dimitri became mad with grief but ultimately tried his best to defend his home. Claude wanted to reshape the world and make it a better place but Edelgard acted before he could. They all spilled a lot of blood for this, and not all to create a better world the way Edelgard wanted to. So if we leave it at that, they are all villains or none of them are.

If that’s the case then Dimitri would be left as a barbaric, psychopath that values revenge over the safety of his people and we can leave it at that. And Claude would be the only tolerable one. However, that’s not the case, their supports, quests and their entire route itself help you see their true character. Please don’t be close minded towards Edelgard, playing her route makes you realize she was placed in a very unfortunate situation.

As I've said in a previous comment, There are things about the character I like, absolutely, but the bad outweigh the good for me. Also, I'll hold my judgement of Claude for when I get to Verdant Wind, but so far, while I think he's funny, he reminds me too much of my ex-brother and that's not a good sign. Ironbay Knight G the difference between Edelgard and Claude is That while Claude got plans and knows something is up with the Church and while he might even have some idea of a plan he could go for. He would never act on it due to him being a coward and because he care about the alliance and that he knows that if he get killed by the Church. There will be a full blown war Between Fólden and Almaya due to him being the king son. And even if the Church found out about Claude knowing to much. They can easily keep him by either giving him thing he want or by force by going to the other members of the Alliance giving them what they want in order to force Claude out of the leader role or the alliance in general. Since the church knows that most of the Alliance key nobles work for their independence from other but also for personal gain which the church can give. Edelgard on other hand. She Has nothing left to loose. She has lost everything in her life from her siblings, to her being able to have a normal functioning marriage or life due to her having scars both physically and mentally. To even being able to grown old and see her children grown up. Or to change the empire for the better. The only thing Edelgard has yet to lose is her and Hubert life. As a result of all this. Edelgard is the only person who can actually force Fólden to change and make it Fólden a functioning society again. She is the only one to willingly play evil dictator if she ends up losing the war in order for Fólden to improve. Edelgard would even risk her new found friendship within her own house for this. That’s the clear difference between Edelgard and Claude. For as much as Claude has his Ideals and he desires. They are nothing if you don’t have the will or courage to act upon them.

Many nobles including Claude & Dimitri voiced their disdain about nobility, crests & church but none of them could do anything because they were still kids who couldn't even ascend their thrones. The war delayed any meaningful, peaceful change.

Rhea never killed any who doesn't believe in her, u have Shamir an athiest who works closely for Rhea, Rhea never controlled Fodlan or waged war or did expremints on innocent ppl, she never created the nobility, she was kicked from the empire which she founded after the war with TWSITD/Nemesis & put a ruler (not herself) over it. When she was kicked out she peacefully went to the Kingdom after Loog fought for independance. When the Alliance split she mitigated the split peacefully. Literally the only questionable thing Rhea did was creating ppl to revive her mother but when it didn't succeed she let them live freely (like Byleth's mother) & don't bring up the western church members excution since they started the rebellion & were after her life & included civillians in their move. You do know that there are hundreds of way to implement change in societies & war is the worst way. Edel took the most destructive way to change & yet didn't even change much, nobles were still in control of their lands (as the case for Ferdenand), common ppl were away from decision making with only the strong could hope to achieve anything, TWSITD still roaming free (except at the end it was implied she got rid of them but we will never know, since it was said she waged ANOTHER war to kill them). Claude's methods were intelligent & sound, he got rid of TWSITD & opened the borders to the world. Dimitri's end took care of the weak & commoners & gave them freedom for desicion making, seperated the church from the country.

MrSuzan I think it’s the latter. Solon failed to kill the professor so his days were numbered as long as Byleth was around. Additionally, whatever you think of Edelgard’s character and motives, it’s clear in every plot line, even when she’s the vilain, that she has a soft spot for Byleth and would much rather be on his/her side.

She makes multiple attempts to sway him/her to her own side even as the Flame Emperor. Only after learning that it's 100% sure that Byleth is basically god she gets discouraged because she is certain Byleth would stay loyal to the Church. But she can't bring herself to kill Byleth becasue of her feelings for him/her. Deep down she prays that Byleth will choose to stay with her, to be her guiding light even if it's impossible. That's why she is surprised when her route is eventually chosen.

@@Darkyan97 Not true, from the start of the game she needed Byleth only to further her plans, when Byleth got the sword of creator she was restless & trying to either get Byleth to her cause or to get rid of them because they're strong & might get in her way. You can see that in many of her supports & namely the 1 with Hubert when she says she HAS to get Byleth to her cause not because she likes them but to help further her plans. Like Edel is very pragmatic & doesn't have any feelings of companionship or love for anyone & she says it herself. Hell even after Jeralt gets killed by her friend from TWSITD the next thing she says to Byleth is to suck it up & move forward ONLY whe she (Edel) moves forward. I felt she was literally using me the whole game until I got to her side at the holy tomb. After the timeskip when she was sure Byleth was by her side THEN she felt good about Byleth because she can win now. This is how her character was written: pragmatic, goal oriented & arrogant, it's really cool but then her fans try to make her a waifu even though she's nothing like that at all.
