Dear Dean, I watch your videos but its now I am looking for specifics as I am inspired with your humble tutorials and also the art and craft work attached to it. Covid is giving tough time as it has reduced the external mobility, so thought of keeping mind engaged in some activity to avoid gloomy mind and unexplained uncertainity. If you would like to share your experience, I wish to to know few tips. 1) Do you use essential oils other than fragrance oils? If so, quantity (per 1000 gm M&P) and process of adding in melt and pour. 2) Things to avoid while making M&P soap ( For eg: Whether excess usage of dye or rubbing alcohol does damage to skin or not?) 3) Will the fragrance wane away in a period of time? 4) If we use two different bases ( say 500 gm extra clear and 500 gm goat milk) together to make a soap, should we add fragrance oil in one base or it should be added to both the bases in equal measure? 5) What we should do for a stronger bond between extra clear and goat milk when we make a layered soap ?.......because my soap is getting seperated at where one layer was poured on another layer even after rubbing alcohol was used immediately after first layer and before pouring the second layer.
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your questions. 1. I have only ever used fragrance oils. For them they are too expensive and fragrance oils are designed to work with soaps and are 100% skin safe. But buy from a good supplier thats trusted. 2. Rubbing alcohol and dye is skin safe but check with the dye supplier to what level, some are high and some are low. Every supplier will be different. 3. I noticed a small drop in scent over a period of 1 year. But apart from that it stays nice and strong at 2% fragrance oils. 4. Add equal amounts, so if your using 2% (which is 20 grams fragrance) then you would add 10 grams fragrance to each 500 gram block of melted soap base. 5. I found when the base gets cold it doesn't hold as well, so pour the next layer when the previous base is still warm but had a skin. Hope they help :)

Yes, but you need to pour slowly and at low temp so the base your pouring does not merge with the other colors. From my experience, there is about a 30 second window to get it all into the mold at the right temp.

Which alcohol do you use to spray? Why use the alcohol?how many soap bars does 1kg of soap base produce ? Why do you check the temperature? Thank you in advance for replying ..
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson Жыл бұрын
Rubbing alcohol is what you need, you can get it in all chemists. Rubbing alcohol makes the layers stick together (bond like glue) and also pops all the bubbles on the surface. For my 1kg, i get 9 bars. 100-110 grams each, plus some end bits as samples. The temperature is checked so so the soap is not too hot, if it is it will merge with the previous layer.

Thank you so much,i am venturing into soap making,what advice would you give to a beginner?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson Жыл бұрын
Start small, buy only what you need. Dont go buy every mica color. Ive talked to so many people that purchased 1000s of dollars worth of supplies then realised they dont like making soaps. Start basic and expand as you learn. Same with fragrances and molds. I knew a lady who had 100s of molds, i asked if she used them all, she said no. Only 3-5 of them. So be picky and not going for gimmick molds. Start with basics, dont just jump into swirling. Start with 1 color, then 2 colors then maybe a layer soap.

Great job! Where did you get your suspension base? Do you think that this worked so well because of the type.of base?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 4 жыл бұрын
I think at the right temp you could do this with a few bases but the timeframe will be so small, some fluid to hard in seconds. I find suspending base to be thicker and hence it should hold a swirl better.

I made my first batch of soap using the instructions that came with my soap kit but the soap is not foaming. Is there a reason? Also, how do l preserve the soap if l"m not using it right away?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 4 жыл бұрын
I don't make the melt and pour base myself so I can tell you why. Best way to preserve the soap is to wrap it in air tight bag.

I haven't heard of that base before. If you can get your hands on some, try Stephenson.

No, you can do it with other bases but it takes good timing with low temps.

I think Katie works more with Cold Process. This video was M&P base.

Hey Dean, do you have a video that shows the process of measuring out the ingredients please?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 4 жыл бұрын
For this base it was melt and pour suspending base. If you mean oils for cold process do a search for "soapcalc" in youtube. That should give you some good results.
