Ground loops are a real nightmare for electronics and every low voltage/current systems which are not designed to handle high currents. Fortunately, you figured out in which condition it happened and you were able to find solutions to prevent damages in the future. Great job 👍 I've been leaning a lot watching your videos. Even a relatively "small" boat like Brupeg (small compared to cruise ships for instance) is a very complex assembly. So many various systems involved, which are supposed to run together. Your knowledge must cover almost every technical domain. I'm impressed!

You can get a drone life saver now for drones they attach to drone and deploys if it hits water (like a epirb type setup) They use them on the Motor Yacht Loon KZbin channel after a few of their drones were lost like your last one. They use DJI drones too.

You can protect the unused terminals on the new fuse blocks by installing blank insulated crimp connectors on all the open tabs. A bit of dielectric grease in each one will keep them clean and handy if you have to replace one of the existing ones...

Great idea cleaning up that wiring. One friendly suggestion--buy yourself a label maker and label those wires with tags indicating what signal is carried. It's amazing how much that will be helpful on a dark night when one of the gauge values goes blank! Cheers.

Nice work finding the cause of the melted wires! A suggestion is to support the wire looms coming out of the big junction box on the engine as these cables come out sideways and should be supported vertically.

My 2 Growatt 5k all in one inverters do what you are trying to do. I can tell them to take 1 amp to 100 amps each from grid (that is your shore power) to charge batteries. I have mine setup so batteries power inverters and house 24/7 until my batteries get below 15% then they use grid to power all loads. Next day sun comes out and charges batteries to programmed amount (60%) then grid is not used and back on batteries. This only happens Nov-Jan. I also keep an eye on storms so if their is a chance of power outage from grid I have them fully charge my 60kw battery bank which gives me 3 days of power in winter and then set grid to charge at 2-5 amps per inverter to keep my batteries above 80% at night. Once they fully charge batteries inverters stop charging with PV and Grid. Now if I can do this with a Growatt than you should be able to with your fancy high priced Victron.

It's a really good principal to employ, to have isolated input buffers on every sensor this not only gives isolation from ground loops but also high voltage transients from lightening, power surges and radio interference. If the input buffers have adjustable gain you can calibrate them to a universal set of voltages for minimum or maximum readings.... As well as feeding the analogue to digital convertors, these can also feed a set of backup analog gauges for use in case of a network failure...

The alternator draw on when the batteries are full might be the load on the system. It’ll usually supply power from source to load without touching the batteries when possible (when they are fully charged). Try looking at your distribution board, if the out matches ~50Amps that’s probably what’s happening x

Would be nice to have a system for automatic check for any wrong grounding of both DC and AC, so that your alarmsystem will register and log time of any faults. Makes it easier to locate the fault, long before any melted cables. No system should use the ships ground as reference. If anything makes a pass to ships hull, nothing happens, as long as only one thing has an earth fault, and it's located and fixed or removed from the systems pretty soon. It would be simple for Duncan to incorporate. You could also have old school sets of Earth-lamps and a momontary push button, for simple and fast manual check on both the DC and the AC in the engineroom and at the switchboard.

Suggestion on the drone - we now know that they fly just fine while carrying something as heavy as a hand grenade, so something like an empty pop bottle painted orange that will keep it afloat if it _does_ land in the water might be a life saver. Or at least, a drone saver...

Hi guys - been casual follower for years. As an Electrical Engineer, can I recommend preparing a full schematic diagram for the electrical. Not a wiring diagram as such but a full schematic so that an unfamiliar tech can at least understand what you have! To make it a bit more diagnostic you can use wire number ferrules and put wire numbers on the schematic. Not urgent but probably important!

If that power regulator in the brunet box is one of the ones off of amazon, carry spares AND put some active cooling on it. They get pretty hot over time and the bottom potting gets soft/starts burning. I have a couple 24-->12v ones just like this that have burn marks on the label underneath. They both still work, but their output power is severely limited now. I wouldn't trust them out on the water. That said, I have one of these that I've had actively cooled (80mm PC fan with thermistor control) for years now, even in the summer heat and it's still rockin' Just my 2cents, but I'd rather have you spend another 30 bucks or whatever and be safe than have everything die in the middle of the ocean.

As much wiring as you've shown and as much as I've watched, which is 100% beside the patreon vids, I've never seen you tin the ends. A lack of Oxygen helps to prevent the burning heat as well. Be mindful I'm writing this before finishing the video. But I want the credit for myself personally 😅. Solder all of the raw wire ends!

Those solar cut off breakers are not rated correct. You need disconnect switches with much larger gaps to safely cutoff DC power from PV panels. I have seen videos of those catching fire after a couple times using. DC has a gap depending on voltage and current. That gap needs to be larger than the highest arc it can create. Disconnect switches have oversize gaps and those breakers do not. Just giving you heads up so you do not burn down your boat.

I have victron gear on my boat. The SoC jumps from 95% to 100% impossibly fast when charging and the amps into the battery stay high for a while after that point in time

Surely on shore power you would be powering the boat directly, or do the inverters also charge the batteries ? One solution might be to install double pole switches on the inverters so you can rune one, the other or both when on shore power Might be an idea to put some floats on the drone ;)

Shore power is just a battery charge that goes via the inverters. Load on the boat is frequently above 3600w which is the max shore power can deliver

21:12 Cat raft .. does the crate stay correct way up when kitty🐈 is on it? You could do with more and with something day glow on it. I use the rubber backed carpet that has ribs, it's used at entrances to office's.. it is mainly black with white bits and a gap between, as it's designed to remove and hold dirt. Purrfet for claws and weather proof. Your Dinghy's bottom.. have you tried any household aka cheap eco friendly or least damaging anti fouls.. as you can get the hull nice and hot and dry have you tried wax.. candle or beeswax, let it melt into metal and then put in the shade or cool in evening so it sets and then put in the water. Sound along tubes.. put a layer of cling film on wire and a little way ID into pipe.. I don't like using grease as it goes everywhere eventually and causes slip hazard.. then fill gap with cheap silicon sealant, as a grommet. ... and maybe a heat sender on the alternator and genset. Because of you I have bought 3 x Victron 100/20.. because of the electronic switched load output. 🐾🐾🐾 🐈

Currently it is 100% dependent on Duncan, however we will soon be moving from the prototype board and coding to a printed circuit board and more robust code. At this point it will be fairly solid and the rest of our IT team (we have a few people skilled in this area that support the project) will be able to become system administrators and solve any issues going forward.

You explained your fuel filter system but I understand that many diesel powered boats have "Fuel Polisher Systems". Do you have a fuel polisher and if not have you considered installing one?

Fuel polishing is just a pumping system that cycles fuel through a set of filters like we have. We do t have the pump so technically do t have a polishing system. However as part of our vege oil fuel system we will be fitting a centrifuge which is able to filter fuel and oil and is miles more effective than filtration. You would think so and it’s certainly something we tried but the system completely shuts down if it sees one inverter offline in anyway. Mega safe system settings. In theory we have a plan D of turn one inverter off and reprogram the system to be a single inverter system but that also means we need to re program as soon as we drop shore power and want to use both inverters to charge from the genset. And the software is just awful. Floppy disc error user interface and as painful to use as it looks. Don’t get me wrong, I still stand by Victron make the best hardware money can buy, but not their software

I was under the impression that Lithium batteries should normally only be charged to about 80% of their capacity. You mentioned that your batteries were not fully charged and that is why the alternator was still charging them. Could you discuss in more depth what is going on. Also, do you have any fear of a battery fire and how you would attempt to extinguish it.

You're not supposed to *store* them above 80%, but it's fine to charge to 100% during normal use. Brupeg's batteries are built into a metal box, with an air duct to outside, so if there's a fire, the can just let the burn themselves out.

@@robinbennett5994 - Interesting but, from what I have read from several sources, those batteries can burn at about 2,000 degrees Celsius. That is hot enough to burn steel, especially when it is as thin as your box. I know it is not a major risk but, I also read that such fires may be caused by too rapid a charge. With the problem you noticed when simultaneously charging using multiple sources (alternator, generator, solar) I'd still be nervous. Perhaps a battery vault using refractory bricks or even sand could minimize such risk.

These batteries can safely handle charging at 1200amps, we can only put a max of around 450amps in the real world testing we have done, so we are miles away from any overcharge danger. These are lithium iron phosphate not straight lithium ion. The difference is huge, fire is an extremely small risk with this chemistry, off gassing is what the regulations care about as that’s the possible risk. Hence the box can be made from plywood and still comply. Heat isn’t the concern here

Hi guys I think you got most all your systems redundant or duplicates. But what about your cell phones .. Because obviously you have a ton of systems and information loaded up on your phones. But if you were to lose one or both. Well I'm sure you know the results of that.. Panic I, sure.. So maybe it would be a great or good idea to purchase spare cell phones .. Duplicates your present phones by transferring all the systems data etc etc and store those phones in a secure protected area in the event of a catastrophe you will not have to completely panic and try to run out by new phones and start loading all those systems in a pressure situation. Just an idea from a long time watcher and fan. Ok tcre be safe and good luck ...

As you stated, 0 deg C = 32 deg F., and 100 C = 212 F, so there are 100 deg C and 180 deg F between the freezing and boiling points of water (at sea level under standard conditions). So, 20 deg C (20 degs C above freezing) = 32 + (20 * 1.8) = 32 + 36 = 68 deg F. I find that this is handy to remember. The only time the temperature is the same on both scales is at -40.

When other new crew are in engine room. Is fuel filter system safe from people & should there be a fold out cover. To protect from being nocked by people or cargo. Is there a minimum engine operating system to rely on. Noticed the quick shut down of solar. Procedures may help with a complicated electrical system. Could be a project for cadets & you supervise. If you are using equipment, outboard, dive tanks, power system always try to operate not at maximum. No parts in remote areas. Use to drink lemon squash had quinine in it for mosquitoes. Videos are agreat but do take time. Bow is the happy place. Looking forward to seeing the journey. Life will change. What about a big kite to help tow breupeg. More ear protection for engine room . Great electrical fix.

What they have created there is a reliability nitemare. Such a simple engine now full of sensors and gauges etc etc. Totaly over the top and unnecessary

Not one part of this system can stop the engine running g and we have analogue gauges on everything critical. What this system does give us is advanced warning of any problems happening before they become an issue. It’s a shame you missed that, we will try and explain it better in the future.

@cameronpollard9212 not many carburettor cars for sale these days. Each to their own but electronics have move on a lot from the old stories. Most trawlers these days have common rail electronic controlled engines. It’s only the legacy stuff that’s still hanging onto mechanical engines. Don’t get me wrong mechanic engines are fantastic engines and last forever, but the newer engines are pretty amazing. We try not to throw the baby out with the bath water

Sometimes life gets in the way. Jess’ mum just died, we’re trying to hold the fort whilst building the boat, filming everything trying to be there for Jess and her family as much as possible and still prepare the boat ready for sea in two days. We never have a day where we don’t feel grateful for our support crew and we understand how missing an episode may be a disappointment to viewers. It’s never our intention to be disrespectful.

John that’s incredible, we feel hugely supported by words like these. Our plan is to pay for running costs from our Patreon and KZbin income and then any projects we take on, to do them at a cost to the project that is wildly cheaper than they would normally pay but enough to sustain us to keep moving on to other areas. It’s possible on one off costs like say a dive tender we would look to run a GFM but we also try to do that only when we have exhausted all other options.
