Note that because of the paint on the outside of the cans and the varnish on the inside of the cans and the high surface area to air ratio aluminum can melting creates a lot of dross. Using a flux will help separate the aluminum from the dross. Also the cans are almost pure aluminum and aluminum acts as a solvent. It will eat its way through your thin walled crucible fairly quickly.

crucible, if I make a new one, it is now made of about 4 mm steel, so it could last for some time. thank you for the warning. I plan to buy borax.
