Melting Glass Bottles on Pottery - What is the best temperature?

What is the best temperature to melt glass bottles in a pottery kiln? I tried 8 different cone firings to find out.
The temperatures shown in the video are what my kiln reported after each firing. Your results may vary slightly, since "Cone temperatures" are more of a range than an exact number.

I love experimenting with glass on ceramics! I just finished doing a project at uni where I took the tiny glass beads from inside a weighted blanket and tried to get them to fuse to a ceramic surface without completely running, based on a 113 year old patent for the process that has been lost to history. I took the beads up to 012 and they didn't melt at all without a flux to help them, so it's interesting to see those big marbles starting to melt at a lower temp.

Justin, have you ever thought about using a fernal lens to fire a pot? I think if you had a couple positioned correctly you could concentrate the sunlight enough to fire a pot. Would be a cool experiment!

Pretty! Wondering why some of the bottle glass crazed, were the bottles all from the same source?

Glass has different melt points. I use COE 91 glass which melts at 1480F.

hi, i was wondering how long were the firings? or at what rate in degrees/hour

What about cooling the kiln at a slower rate to control the cracking issue?

Cool experiment. I bet dichroic glass melted on pottery would look interesting.Curious to see what your marble project/experiment is!

I love dichroic glass but I’ve heard the dichroic coating might be ruined with high heat. This would be a great experiment.

@@HGD70 dichroic glass melts completely at 1550 F so I wouldn’t go much higher with it

Super cool. Maybe cut the bottle and put the neck down in the neck of the pot so that it doesn't close the opening.

This is my 1st look into melting glass in a kiln. Im very crafty but have never did anything with a kiln b4, so im.very interested in the processes. Does the melted glass bottle come off of the ceramic to be used separately or does it fused together? Im doing a ton more research but please help 😊

Awesome thumbnail, I can imagine the marbles being used for eyes on a frog or something

Where are all the tests from cone 14 to 5? Lol I want to see it fully melt till it pokes a hole on the mouth of the bottle and yet not so runny that runs off and sticks the piece to the shelf :)

I'm interesting in trying to clean up a community overflowing with trash. I want to start with recycling glass. Can you speak with me about that goal? Perhaps grinding to powder and melting into objects the people can sell?

Glass has different melt points. Grinding it to a powder (probably) should not matter. Be aware glass mixed with ceramic renders the pot unsafe for food or drink due to crazing.

Well, I guess you now have sort of interesting sculptures. 🙂

Might avoid cracking in glass slumping with a full kiln. Cools slower.

When the contraction rate of the glass is greater than the ceramic body crazing will result.

I’ve been fusing glass for years. Bullseye glass totally melts about 1550 F.
