@@droneadventures4147 he definitely wasn't, and from Buzz's perspective Kurt was an old friend he tragically lost. You'd have mixed feelings about one of your friends from highschool going out like that too if you were in his shoes.

He says that if Kurt looked like fat albert no one would have given a shit about his music. I find that absurd. Kurt was a genius songrwriter. People shit on Kurt's technical abilities all the time, but his genius was songrwriting. Writing simple songs that people love is hard. There's a reason only a few people per generation are able to do it over multiple albums.
@smalllhank

@jmcdl that's not absurd, buzz isn't saying his songwriting isn't good only that Kurt (a very dear friend to him) was packaged and sold to the masses in a way that ended up killing him. Had Kurt looked like fat Albert big record labels couldn't package him as a punk rock grunge heart throb for teenagers

@jamesbeam69 His direct quote is "I honestly believe that if Kurt Cobain looked like Fat Albert nobody would have given a shit about him or his music". He's pretty clearly saying that there was nothing special about Kurt's music and it's only because of image that he became famous. I find that absurd.

@@stanbrule9357 buzz never speaks about Kurt with much compassion or empathy. It’s obvious his addiction is a needle for him to demean Kurt while exalting himself because buzz is clean, no different than history teachers that criticized historical figures the implication being your history teacher is superior to the historical figure. Buzz is not humble. He also talks about how great his music is and how Nirvana only were big cause of an image. Nirvana was big cause the music. It was melodic and the vocal had power and range. Melvins are not melodic and the vocals limited ability is one of many reasons melvins music wasn’t bigger. Nothing wrong with music that isn’t melodic or sang with broad range, it’s just the masses prefer something different. Joy divisions is one of my favorite bands yet their music is sang with very limited vocal range.

They also had different music in this alternate universe that allowed them to get to that level. Any bar out there is gonna play Nirvana over Melvins. Now imagine it’s 1990. It’s the same deal. Nirvana just wrote better music from the get go. Sure, Melvin’s are more out there and perfect for those ppl who are more out there themselves, but that’s not most ppl. Buzz spent a good amount of time being rational about that and keeping his saltiness to himself. As years go on and as he ages, and as Melvin’s have continued to not even come close to that level of success, he’s having much more trouble hiding his saltiness. He took the burden of being that niche, out there band, and we’re seeing nowadays how being niche forever can turn you into a salty complainer. For every good thing he’s said about Kurt, he’s also trashed his band, who was Kurt. Kurt was Nirvana that’s why they were done as soon as he passed away. Now go watch what Buzz also had to say about Dave Grohl. Sometimes saying nothing is better if you got nothing nice to say. “Oh he didn’t answer my calls, this super successful rockstar who’s always on tour and is much more famous than I am didn’t return my calls.” Sounding like a salty ex gf. I don’t understand Buzz’s appeal. It’s like deep down he knows his music was never gonna make it to that level of success, and he’s lying through his teeth that he’s happy about how it panned out, how he didn’t “sell out.” That’s where all this talking sh!t comes from. The real proof that he’s not happy about how his band turned out and that he needs to talk down on all the others to find consolation. It’s not hard to see when the guy says he feels terrible about what happened to Kurt, but then follows it with “I feel in part to blame because I got him into music” and not see the egocentric nature of that. Not everything is about you, Buzz. Things still happen even without your influence. Never understood this guys appeal. That whole bands appeal. Is Alice In Chains’ Dirt a sellout album too? Badmotorfinger? Ten? Those albums blow any Melvin’s stuff out of the water. No wonder why that’s who got famous vs who didn’t.

Oh, Kurt definitely, but what does that matter when your image is hyper-romanticized, miscontrued and often memorialized incorrectly and all that's left to speak for you is your daughter who never knew you and your wife who's a nutcase? Buzzo is alive and well, makes a modest living, does what he wants on his terms and has remained true to himself for 40 years. I don't feel bad for Buzz, short of the traumatic loss of his friend. I Grieve for Kurt Cobain, because only a handful of people ever knew the real version of him and that's unfortunately not the one we know.

Nirvana are one of my favorite bands but I'd much prefer if Nirvana never existed if that would mean Kurt could still be alive today. The issue with that is that music is what kept Cobain alive for the time he was, and he would have resorter to heroin regardless due to his stomach problems. I do agree that Kurt's image sold the bulk of the Nirvana records, even though they're one of my favorite bands, of course the image thing is true. It was all about marketability and Kurt had everything that could be marketable. And his suicide is hands down the most marketable thing about him. It is just a bummer. The glorification of drug addiction and suicide, the glamorizing of the 27 club. It's fucking miserable. And Kurt left behind a kid and a lot of people who genuinely loved him. Krist was never the same after Kurt died. It still hurts everyone who was around Kurt. Their friend's death was prostituted by the media and music industry and still is to this day. I'm sorry you were hurting Kurt, rest in piece.

Nirvana was passed over by SST in the '80s even with Mark Lanegan's urging that they were the best band out there. Sub Pop didn't even believe in Nirvana's staying power as a band and hardly invested in them at all And dicked them around a lot. I firmly believe Nirvana's success was the result of MTV marketing based upon their aesthetic appeal. They're as good ever, but after the MTV era began, you didn't succeed because you were good, you succeeded because you were marketable. As for the Melvins, the two bands are 100% different and incomparable. Nirvana wanted to make rock songs with a pop formula, the Melvins wanted to be the Melvins.

More like he’s still obviously sad about the loss of an old friend? It’s really sad people think the only thing that matters is notoriety, that it truly does give you immortality, but he said it himself, Kurt Cobain is dead, and he would have rather had none of that stuff happened if it meant his friend could still be alive. That includes the notoriety he got second hand from Nirvana exploding. That kind of fame usually isn’t good for anyone, and certainly didn’t help with Kurt’s addiction/mental health issues. Crazy how people can spin that as “he’s jealous and bitter” when his bitterness comes from watching someone once close to him change and succumb to addiction. But fans don’t care about that as long as it means the world gets to hear his music. I think that’s what Buzzo here is bitter about.
