The way they could just transition into character so effortlessly is why we loved them.

I love how they all stay in character. I'm a recent convert to this show. Discovered it accidentally, as it's virtually unknown where I live in the USA. I understand it's highly regarded in the UK, as it should be. Forget the modern big-screen reboot. The ORIGINAL Dad's Army episodes are hilarious. The series may have ended 4 decades ago, but they're brand new to me!

Arthur Lowe altering his glasses and cap right at the end there during the "squabble." And the laugh that Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier shared at around the 2:21 mark was simply brilliant to watch. What a truly wonderful cast of actors! And an amazing clip to keep watching.

Dads Army had its very own special charm and soul , that endeared the tv viewers to love it for near on 10 years. Very few comedies captured the viewers hearts like this little gem, written by genius writers Perry and croft. With brilliant character acting and hilarious scripts, Dads Army is a classic that was part of a Golden Era of British comedy from the 1960s and 70s............miss those wonderful times

So nice to see some of the cast impromptu like that. It just brings into focus what a professional, tight group they really were. The series is my comfort in an increasingly dystopian world. Cheers for posting!

Bill Pertwee's casting as the warden was inspired, that officious little bully was the epitome of a certain type of public servant.

By the time of the second series the writers were basing the main characters on the actual actors. Hence, John Le Mesurier really was very close to Arthur Wilson. Having said that Bill Pertwee was nothing like Hodges. I met him once and a nicer fellow you couldn't wish to meet. Also he starred in Round the Horne as he was quite a good impressionist.

@timelordtardis
@timelordtardis 3 жыл бұрын
@@glen7318 So I gather. It's well documented that after the first series the writers based more of the characters on the actors own traitts. Hence Wilson as Century22 points out, bares more than a passing resemblance to John Le Mesurier.

One thing that always bugged me was seeing promo images for the Dad's Army movie in which Mainwaring is wearing the 1970s horn rimmed glasses that are clearly Arthur Lowe's own and not the little round wire framed glasses from the 1940s. Its a small thing but it catches my eye every time.
