It's great to see an animated feature that feels more like a creative passion project than a studio product!

Yup. When you're only making a movie every fifteen years, money can't be your primary motivator.

I seen an ad for it on Instagram. I had seen Mary and Max before so I recognized the style, and on a whim I decided to see if it was showing in any theaters near me. Bought my ticket and didn’t really have too many expectations as I didn’t watch the trailer past a few seconds. I was the only one in there on an early Monday after noon around 1:30 pm. Gosh, it was a great film. I cried my eyes out… when I walked out of the theater, all I could think was, “what on earth did I just see?” I have no one to talk to about it so I’m planning on inviting a friend to see it sometime. Might be one of my favorite movies ever

It snuck up on me too. As a critic, you get a flood of emails about new movies/screeners. This one only really caught my eye because I saw Nick Cave's name, whom I'm a big fan of. It's now one of my favorite movies of the year, by far. Thanks for watching and leaving your experience! One of the purposes of this channel is to give an audience to movies like this one that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Saw it yesterday at the Aero in Santa Monica with a fairly large house, and it went over very well. The movie was endearing and impactful, for sure- specifically, that sister/brother bond was very touching, and had me choking up several times.

The bright side of being a critic is you get sent early copies of movies, but the flip-side is you often don't get to see movies in theaters--on first watch, at least. That's me saying I envy your theater experience. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@FeatureUnderground I'm in the L.A. area and, although I'm not a member of the American Cinematheque, I'm on their email list and get RSVP offers to see movies for free, sometimes with the filmmakers attending. It's a method to get a big crowd for specific films, especially around Oscar season. I don't know if I would have seen "Memoir" otherwise, but I found it profoundly moving as well as funny (that broken finger moment just about brought down the house), and would put it at #2 on my list for 2024, behind "Wicked."

First I've heard of it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I hadn't heard of it until I got the email, and the only thing that caught my attention was Nick Cave's name. Very glad I ended up watching it.

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Wow, you've put a lot of thought into this. To be completely honest, I'm not a big fan of the Oscars, but if we're just talking the best animated movies of the year, I haven't seen most of these. I'm a voter in the HFCS awards, so I get sent award screeners that allow me to catch up on everything I missed.
