I have visited Islandbridge several times which is dedicated to the fallen Irish soldiers of WW1. It is a beautiful memorial and it is a tranquil and peaceful park. The Irish fallen soldiers of WW1 have been conveniently airbrushed from Irish history. For Irish Nationalists and Republicans out there who want to make some remark should realise the following. A lot of Irish veterans of WW1 would join the IRA during the Irish War of Independence 1919-1921 including 5 decorated soldiers including a VC recipient. It is no coincidence that the best IRA units in the Irish War of Independence had WW1 veterans in the ranks and it is no coincidence that the most successful IRA ambushes were either planned by an IRA veteran of WW1 or an IRA veteran played a crucial role in their success. Rineen,Kilmichael.Dromkeen, Clonfin,Ballyvourney,Crossbarry, Headford. Emmet Dalton held the post of Director of Training at the IRA GHQ in Dublin and he was awarded the Military Cross at Guichy in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme while serving with the 9th Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was with Michael Collins when he was KIA. Tom Barry was the most successful IRA Field Commander and he served with the Royal Field Artillery in WW1. By the way the architect who designed this beautiful memorial at Islandbridege is Edward Luythchens who also designed the Cenotaph in London to commemorate the "Unknown Soldier" and the Thiepval Memorial in France to commemorate those who fell in the Battle of the Somme. No doubt you will visit the Garden of Remembrance to commemorate those who fell fighting for Irish freedom. I have visited this memorial also. As you know it is just passed the Parnell monument and behind the Rotunda hospital. Thank you for this upload.
