The downside is that this channel can't be an impartial critic of WOTC. Waxing lyrical about the memories evoked by these cards and not mentioning the small issue of their large price... is that because Sam authentically believes that Masters sets should be premium collectors' memorabilia and not accessible reprints for formats like Modern (most popular deck: $1200), Legacy (>$4k) or Pioneer ($500, with heavy upkeep costs as it's a young format)? Or is it because he knows that he'll fall out of WOTC's good graces if he says anything? Right now every flagship eternal format is ludicrously expensive, yet double masters costs ~2.5-3x what a normal set would, despite being way easier to develop (all they need is to commission some art and throw together a decent draft format). WOTC is enjoying the best commercial years of Magic's history and they're thanking the players with £250+ booster boxes. I'm not saying you shouldn't be happy for Rhystic Studies getting publicity but just remember that WOTC isn't doing it out of the kindness of their hearts, they're doing it because they want him on their side.
@ImortalZeus132 жыл бұрын
@@dm9910 While I agree with your concerns, it's more likely that Sam never even wants to broach the concept of "reviewing" magic product as a product, and instead desires to only talk about art in his characteristically flowery way. Sometimes the memories dredged up by Masters sets are in time for the future to enter and other times to enter the past not taken. The full art Chaos Warp by Phil Foglio might be the first time most people will find out about the sillier, whimiscal side of standard magic in the 90s, as the last set to have new art from him was Unglued (under the alias Claymoore J. Flapdoodle). Or the fact that I forget whether or not that was my writing on the flavor text of Crucible of Worlds, considering that it was a community voted and made card in 2003-04. Mayel's Aria reminded me of a forgotten Naya Deck that needs to be finished in the brew.

And then Rise of the Eldrazi came, and Emrakul was briefly legal in the format - what a rush! As always, Sam, a beautifully-woven video. You are a beacon of optimism when it comes to Magic, and that aura always takes me back to when I first started playing, back during an era of whimsy and wonder. If I may comment a duo of cards which beget long-lost memories of my own, Arachnus Spinner and Arachnus Web come to mind- with a little bit of help from Deadly Recluse. Seeing all their inclusions in Double Masters 2022 brings me great joy, especially with the downshifts. I hope to once again own foil copies of these cards that I have cast hundreds of times over a kitchen table, sharing a few spellslinging nights with my family. I adore the flavor of Arachnus Spinner- simply an elegant representation of a spider casting its web, and the creature's ability to break out of it with enough willpower. It has won me many a game as a sort of control win condition back during its time. I truly wish Wizards would print more cheap and efficient spiders in the same vein as Deadly Recluse, because the inner mage in me wishes to replicate my old deck once more. It is something I dote on- looking back at cards from the past that I used to play and love so much, and rebuild a deck around them with a modern flair. Including new cards printed since that original deck's creation, as well as a better understanding of what makes Magic decks function so well- it reminds me of when artists revisit old pieces they've done and recreate them, showing how much they've progressed as a creative. It's a humbling and exciting thing to do, and Masters sets always seem to remind me about another card that has been lost to the annals of time.

I like how you framed Master sets as *the* place where players' memories of MtG coalesce and overlap with one another, because that's what my draft experience of this set really felt like. Even drafting and playing something as simple as Boros beatdown reminded me of so many things, from building my first commander deck with Aurelia, the Warleader; to playing with cards like Heroic Reinforcement and Tenth District Legionnaire in different Standard formats; to playing Lightning Bolt, Rift Bolt, *and* Lightning Helix reminding me of how it first felt to directly damage someone for three.

I made a tarkir cube, with the same goal in mind, to take me and the people I started playing magic with down memory lane. but if I had to point out specific cards, I would say As Foretold. in high school at the start of summer break we would camp in the backyard of one of our friends and buy a booster box to draft together and play lots of commander after the draft. one year we drafted amonkhet. after the draft was done and we played our games, it started raining, really really badly. it was so bad that the tent flooded and some of my cards got water damaged, and the most expensive one from those was As Foretold.

Cursed Scroll, and really the entire Tempest Block, are definitely the locus of my Magic memories and nostalgia from childhood. In 1998 I was 12 and went to Wizards of the Coast Game Camp in Seattle, one of I think only two times Game Camp ever happened. It was one week of staying in the dorms at University of Washington, with a bunch of other magic players of various ages, and making a daily trek to Wizards Game Center (their flagship store at the time) in University District. In addition to Magic, there were daily Starcraft LAN tournaments at the Game Center. There was a ton of casual Magic play, but also a series of tournaments that culminated in a final match which had mono-color decks facing off against each other. For the Standard games I won with an incredibly annoying UG Tradewind Rider/Stasis deck. For the mono-color final I played a Sligh deck featuring Cursed Scroll. These were incredibly significant to me at the time, since it was the first time I used my saved allowance and some trading to acquire a playset of a chase rare. For some reason this was a 5-player multiplayer match, long before EDH existed. I think no one really expected a red Sligh deck to win a 5-player match, and I was the youngest player at the table. Those factors contributed to people ignoring me for most of the match, or not seeing me as a real threat. Somehow I was able to bring it home in the long game thanks to Cursed Scroll. I received an award plaque etched with the title "Hero of Rath," which I have to this day. So thanks to Wizards for hosting an awesome summer camp, even if it is hard to convince people it actually happened!

Finally got the time to watch this fantastic video, amazing job as always! Very happy to see that you finally got sponsored by WotC, your work elevates what they do and helps people understand that there is more to MtG than just what we find at face value. I hope you get to work with them again.

Why am I crying at the club? Seriously though, I’ve been on a downswing with magic because of price increases and product fatigue, and I sincerely thank you for reminding me why this game makes me so happy.

Your videos, Magic Arcanum's and MtG in general are very good at making me nostalgic for a history I wasn't part of. And when you touch on moments from Theros or Tarkir's sets where I was playing it's even more so. Seeing the same artists and their styles on cards after all these years is so magical, there's just something about the old art It's the same feeling I get when I see a Blue Eye White Dragon in YuGiOH or older covers of Warhammer 40k Codexes, growing up with something really does cement it in your mind forever

My time with MtG started about a decade ago, so looking through the Double Masters offerings, the cards that fill me with the most nostalgia are the many Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash cards - my first block with the game. Honourable mention to the numerous Tarkir reprints in here too, one of my all-time favourite sets! This video's such a great exploration and celebration of the game's past and this set!

Mindwarper from stronghold brings back memories as it was my first exposure to MTG. I was 9 or 10 playing at my local school's jungle gym and I found a box of cards in the slides, and on the cover was mindwarper. turns out it was the stronghold theme deck Migraine. Thought the monster looked cool AF so I kept it. it wasn't until i was 11 or 12 when I first started playing the game tho.

Watching this after overhearing some of the ~discourse~ over the weekend. This is another excellent video from Sam, as celebratory and nostalgic as ever. I'm glad to see creators getting compensated for their work in promoting the game. My only criticism is that I wish I had more context for some of the PT moments as I missed out on many of these before getting into the game. Also looking forward to listening to your interview with the Commander Sphere!

Divine Visitation reminds me of the latest Ravnica standard at my old LGS before it closed. Kasmina’s Transmutation reminds me of the War of the Spark sealed event at said old LGS, it was the last event before it closed. Anger of the Gods simultaneously reminds me of Alara and Alara reborn as one of my favourite sets and small amount of cards I have of it, and also of Hazoret beating me down in FNM during Ixalan Standard.

Although I didn't play during those times, I very much appreciate the era of Kamigawa, Theros, Time Shift and similars because I would buy older booster packs at newspaper shops (for some reason, in Italy, newspaper shops have trading cards, and old MtG cards are very common.)

When I understand the premise of this video, I went ON TCGPlayer and purchased the original art Eternal Witness and Richard Kane Ferguson’s Blackblade Reforged, as well as Dryad Arbor for good measure (a card I’ve always wanted but it was too expensive up until now)!

Great video as always, and I continue to love your work. I'm glad WotC is sponsoring you so you can continue to do excellent work. That said, this set just kinda bums me out. I've always loved the Masters sets. This is one of the greatest looking Masters sets, and I can't buy packs or draft because they've effectively priced me out of the game. The last time a set hit me this way was Time Spiral Remastered, which was a set that I really wanted to buy a box of, but because I didn't think to preorder, I got priced out of it almost immediately.
