I grew up in that area. Before it was a movie theatre, it was an Alexander's Market. We used to hear the chimes from the tower every day. Great memories.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s within walking distance of Laurel and Valley Plazas. There was pretty much everything a kid could want there. In and near Valley Plaza I remember triple features at that movie theater. I still think of the big tubs of delicious Mac&Cheese at Schabers Cafeteria, looking at Crafstman tools at Sears, getting free black licorice at Licorice Pizza. Staying all night on the sidewalk outside of Ticketron to get early concert tickets. I think there was also a Fedco (after Woolworths?), and an S&H Green Stamp outlet. At Laurel Plaza I skated a lot at Ice Capades. There was a food court where you could watch the skaters. It had an Orange Julius. There was a pet store and a Radio Shack also in there. At the bank there I got my first bank account with that little bank book. My friend taught me to drive in a 65 Mustang GT in that parking lot when it was empty. So many memories.....

You are a great story teller. I grew up in the SFV. I remember going to Valley Plaza, and the May Co as a young boy. I later worked for the May Co from 1971-75. I was an engineer there. That was the second best job of my life. I later was in the fire service for 38.5 years. You bring back so many memories for me.Please keep it going...

Thanks Kurt, you're the greatest. I appreciate adding my memory of seeing John Kennedy campaign next to Sears in 1960 and the picture of Kennedy in the convertible. We moved to the Valley in late 1957 when I was 9 and lived in North Hollywood, Pacoima, and Van Nuys until the 1970s and I rode my bike all over. One of the biggest migrations of people in the US was people moving to the Valley after World War II.

This video brought back many great memories. I graduated Polytechnic High School in 1979 and lived about 3 blocks north of Saticoy Street Elementary School. In the early 1970's, there were no town houses or condos in this area, rather it was dominated by mostly 1,100 - 1,200 homes. Strathern Street had some newer homes, which we admired a lot. Just north of the elementary school, there was a multi-acre field with a barn. However, most of the area was developed with tract homes built in the late 1950's, which originally sold for $9,000 total cost. Both Coldwater Canyon and Strathern had small hilly dirt piles that I spent hours riding over while humming to myself the theme song from Speed Racer. My eyes were bad, so I didn't actually attend Saticoy Elementary. Valley students with really bad eyes were bused to Chase Street School in Panarama City. Chase Street School is great too! During the early 1980s, on the corner of Coldwater Canyon and Roscoe, a young lady asked me for directions to find a street called Fulton Avenue. I told her to follow my car. When we got to Fulton, I pulled over as did she. She then asked if I wanted a drink. I said, "sure." I sat in her passenger seat, and she proceeded to hand me a plastic wine glass and filled it half full with wine. I gulped down quickly. Being shy that I am, I told her thank you and drove home, alone, which was less than 30 seconds away. lol

My sister use to work at the Payless shoes next to/near the Woolworth’s and whenever we’d pick her up I’d go look around Woolworth’s. She bought me my first NES from that Woolworth’s. We lived in Sylmar for most of my childhood but we went to Valley Plaza often, that was the Sears we went to on Sundays and then my sister wound up moving to North Hollywood so I’d spend some time out there with her. Good videos, man, these are my favorite!

If I recall correctly...since you could see the Valley Plaza tower mural from the 170 freeway, one version that celebrated the LA Raiders for a long time was a rear silhouette picture of Bo Jackson in his uniform and pads holding his Raider helmet in his hand walking down a stadium hallway which more than was the LA Memorial Coliseum. Was fun to see especially if you were a Raider fan :) Great video as always Kurt...keep them coming!

hahahaha your stories at Saticoy Elementary School are so funny. I can't believe you remember them because I hadn't until you mentioned it. I suppose all of us at some point were learning the ropes of "bad words". Sounds remarkably similar to my stories. And oh man, I always tell people you don't know what it's like living in the 70s and 80s as a kid worrying and even crying about war with Russia. My 4 year old brother in mid 70s was crying about dying from war with Russia. The cold war was intense. Man oh man, I completely forgot about that Winnetka drive in theater. I wish they wouldn't tear any of those mid century buildings anymore. That Sears is where I would drive up from Los Angeles to get car batteries (I don't even remember why). That Great Wall of China restaurant oh man.. I haven't seen that in 30 years. I think in the early 90s we would throw parties there when the business shutdown. So crazy. I'll always remember Jerry's Deli on Ventura. I believe it's still there but Jerry's Deli was amazing back then. And the shops where you can buy Jimmy Z shorts which seemed to be exorbitantly expensive to me back then. Because of the pandemic Canoga Park High School didn't have their 30 year alumni event so they're throwing it this year. This video is making me want to attend lol.

Love this! I collected Series 2 Garbage Pail kids in 1985. I bought them at a Pharmacy across the street from my Elementary school. In a bizarre twist, the same Pharmacy was used as a filming location from Halloween 4 (1988). I remember them filming. Seven years ago I completed a 1985 Garbage Pail Kids Series 1 Master Set appraised by PSA. The fun still continues! Thanks for your awesome videos and all you do! Cheers Kurt!

I worked for a plumbing company that replaced all the plumbing pipes inside The Bunker, this was in 1985. It was a real dive bar, so dimly lit that it took a minute for your eyes to adjust when coming in from the bright sunshine. What I remember most was the horrific smell eminating from the single bathroom (yes, only one LOL) after we removed 6 or 8 layers of glue down floor tile. Yep, a mixture of puke and piss. We wore double filter respirators and the smell was so pungent it was still noticeable. Sorry but that memory stands out like it was yesterday.

Outdoor cafeterias and handball courts! Oh, the memories! When my family moved to Eugene, Oregon, there was an elementary school at the end of our street. I was very surprised to not see handball courts anywhere at all. None of the schools up here have them. I was just thinking of something similar to your "but" story. So, I had this babysitter who was about 15. I was in second grade, and thought she was the most amazing person to ever live. One night, she asked me: "Want to hear a dirty joke?" "Sure." "If you eat sage, it will make you ugly." That was the entire thing, and I didn't get it at all. I don't think she was even trying to make sense. Anyway, next day, I tried to be cool and asked this random girl: "Want to hear a dirty joke?" "Teacher!!!" The teacher took me outside and told me to clap erasers in the hallway. But she got curious, and now I was embarrassed... "What was the joke?" "Uh... if... you... eat sage, it will... make you ugly." "That's it?" "Yeah." "Uh, OK then." She let me back in after that.

I saw Independence Day opening night at the Regency Theaters in the Valley Plaza with my best buddy at the time and another friend. I lost touch with him after he got married around the year 2000. I also moved on to other things and now I live out of CA. I sometimes wanted to look him up and call him to catch up but got "too busy" so I never did. I was googling my old neighborhood in North Hollywood a few weeks ago and looked him up because I was planning a trip to CA and I came across his obituary from 3 years ago. Hit me like a bucket of cold water and for the next few days I felt real sad, even shed a few tears. I lived in the Valley from 1990 until 2009 or so. It's been turned into The San Fernando Varrio. It's lost much of its magic, most of CA has.

The sky even looks cloudy. The sun doesn't seem as bright. I know there are gigantic problems for California now. I really miss and really love L.A. but maybe I miss a memory that no longer seems to exist. I loved the optimism and the bright creativity. Is it still there? A question to the people that live there: Does it feel like it's all dying compared to ten years ago or is it just me being a sentimental downer?

I remember Barbizon! I attended the one in my hometown of Chicago though. I still find it fascinating it reached here in Cali. Wow! Laurel plaza was also affected by an earthquake just like the old Sherman Oaks Galleria. Garbage pail kids rocked! That’s so nice you get to see your childhood house. Thanks for sharing.

The Laurel Plaza area, I remember as THE place to shop. I grew up on the other side of the valley, but we would all pile into the station wagon to make the drive across town. We did ALL of our serious shopping there. I worked not far from there, but avoided it as an adult. When the N H shootout happened, we went down on lock-in the entire day. Saticoy El. I spent some summer schools there. I an bummed about Winnetka. I LOVED the drive in. I took my bf to see Top Gun there. Now I have to drive to Timbuktu to see a drive in movie. The in person movie theaters are going to be a thing of the past. Sad Sorry I didn't get back to your email. I injured my texting hand.

Love that mid school Dyno! You need to go for a ride with my 80s BMX club, RAD Force BMX Squad. We just had a club ride to the Karate Kid apartments, South Seas Apartments.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane I lived in the Valley from '68 to'79 and it's so sad to see all that isn't there anymore. I used to go licorice pizza digging thru the import records for Tangerine Dream records.bought car insurance at the Sears in Valley plaza ,used to get my stereo equipment from Pacific stereo in North Hollywood. my dad and I would go for great chili at Chili John's,used to go to a neat old hobby shop in Burbank that I can't remember the name but was old school and great.went through the '71 earthquake and lived in Lancaster in '94 I worked for the gas company and went down to restore service and couldn't believe the damage. I should have stayed the home we bought in '73 for 29k is now 700k I can't believe that.it is in Van Nuys near the airport only 2 bedrooms and now 3/4 of a million! it's too bad the condition of the valley now I'm going down to LA next month and will go see what's left

The last drive in movie I saw was natural born killers at the winnetka drive in. Was sad to see it go but then got to enjoy many awesome movies including the much anticipated Star Wars episode 1 in high school at pacific theaters. Attended Vanalden elementary in late 80s and early 90s. Yard looks exactly same as staticoy elementary. Great memories.

That was really great ! Here in Europe, we would know some of the place names just from the osmosis of US culture coming into our livingrooms on the telly. Weird to see the actual building where they made He-Man - we watched it all the time as kids. Your local government there should give you a grant or something because you are doing what a local historian would do. You **are** a local historian

What used to be the Warner Center, is now only a few restaurants but the shops are now gone. I heard that entire complex going east from Topanga Canyon Blvd to Canoga and maybe even further east, will be a mixed use complex with more housing- condos etc, and a 8,000 to 10,000 seat arena!! There are also rumors that the Rams plan to buy the land and make it their practice and training camp complex. But, those seem to be fairytales!
