I recently read on a guitar forum a post from a guy who had played for years and had been stuck for a while. He memorized the fretboard and suddenly one evening as he played...he was able to jam out and he played for a couple hours. He said it all came together because he could see what he was doing as he played things he knew while thinking of the notes he was playing. It made me realize that I need to be able to know what note I'm playing at all times, which is why I'm here! Thank you for creating these videos and the PDFs!

I do believe it’s essential to learn the notes, and I think that the insight a lot of people miss in a story like that is that you’re not thinking of the names of every note as you play them, but being able to think of a note and then immediately move your fingers to the right position is exactly what gives you the freedom to move all over the fretboard. @@fretscience This makes a lot of sense especially after recently seeing a clip with Joe Bonamassa saying "if you're thinking about what to play, you're too late." It seems similar to Chess. You want to be thinking at least 3-5 steps ahead. When we know where we're going it's much easier to find paths to get there.

@@JesusRevezzo I think that when we talk about thinking, it's very easy to misunderstand what we mean. I have no doubt that the best players have internalized these patterns so well that using them doesn't feel like thought. My claim is that my approach to learning scales (and other patterns) is a much more efficient way to get there than the typical ways that scales are taught. 🎸🧪🤘

Hi Keith, I have been playing the acoustic guitar for about 30 years now. After years of feeling "trapped" within the confines of the first 5 frets, I decided that I needed to start learning the notes of the fretboard. I've watched countless videos on everything from the CAGED-system to triads. They all kept saying that I need to visualize the chords within the scales, but - try as I might - I just couldn't. This video is the first one I've seen, where I actually had two "aha-moments": how the diagonal movement in octaves relates to CAGED, and using the rectangle and stack for the pentatonic, as well as how the warp affects both. I really feel like your way of explaining these patterns has unlocked a door to visualization for me! Thanks!

I made the exact same mistake. I had started playing when I was 15 ( I'm now 62) I played for a good 25years and got pretty good. But I always ran into that wall because I had never learned the notes. A lot of it was there was no such thing as the internet and I could never afford lessons. Life as it does over took me and I out down the guitar for many years. I had to focus more on raising my family and for the longest time never got back to it.I was finally able to pick it back about 15 years or so and I started from scratch. The first thing I did was to learn the note names and I couldn't believe how much my playing took off. It was so much easier learning theory after I took those first steps of learning the neck. My playing took off like lightning. Now I can play pretty much any thing I want to with proficiency. I play everything now from classical to absolute shredding. The one piece of advice I can offer is the most important thing whether you are from a beginner to advanced is learn the notes of the feet board. You would be amazed how fast you will improve and be able to finally play anything you want. JUST DO IT!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

I am a so-called three-chord player, working through the basics, moving toward improvised fills while playing chords (chord-tone is what people call it, I think). It's especially useful to hear confirmation, toward the end, that working cyclical is a smart way to approach practice. Yesterday I worried about abandoning what I was working on last month while taking on something new. No more worrying, now I think of it as a loop and not a ladder. In my collection of KZbin links notes about practice I have a subset (getting bigger all the time) called "next." I've added rectangle and stack (Method 2) as a new next. Thanks.

That’s a solid choice. The pentatonic scale will definitely give you the biggest bang for your buck in terms of creating fills. 🎸🧪🤘

I’m truly glad you’re here, but if you’re just starting out, this may not be the best place to start. I usually recommend learning some chords first and starting out strumming some songs. My Cowboy Chord Superpowers video is worth watching after you’ve learned your first handful of chords, and then this is a great place to return when you feel ready to learn to play melodies and dip into jamming. Whatever you do, keep it fun and stick with it…it’s a rewarding experience!

I find that I have more tingling sensation when my blood sugar is up from carbs. Now, you may be developing a hardening of your fingers into a callous, which is well and good as the localized string “pain” disappears entirely. Then you may change strings, or guitars and they may be less “coarse” on the fingers. You will understNd when you get there and look back. I would just do “spider walk exercises” look it up. Get fingers moving independently. Make the neural connections! And like the other said, chords. Put your hand on the guitar in the chord shape strum down up. Then do this release the pressure on strings (muted) do it again. Repeat. After this is fluid, try lift off the strings and down up,… work toward pun hand on knee then get it back on in the chord. All fingers at same time. It won’t come easy. Trust the process. Sometimes you beat yourself up “can’t do it” go to sleep. In the morning BAM! Got it. The brain took over while you were sleeping.

Describing the relationships between notes as a chess move really gave me some insight, playing an octave of whatever note you're already playing really is like moving a chess piece, knowing where each scale degree is in relation to your current note being played is exactly like the different movements of chess pieces.

Can someone give those who worked on this video medals for making the single best introduction to music theory and teaching you to actually "see" the fretboard for what it is? I recently discovered the caged system on my own because I had a basic understanding of all my majors and minors and well as some augmented and diminished chords and I finally started seeing what I was actually playing. It's made messing around a lot more interesting. I think caged is the biggest thing I wish I learned about sooner right next to scales.

That’s awesome, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that moving around the fretboard will make you sound less mechanical. BB King mainly played out of a very limited range of positions and was anything but mechanical-sounding. Working on phrasing is the biggest key to making better music!

Yes. Spend time early learning the fret board. What I did back in the seventies was easy. I drew a guitar neck. In-between the frets I wrote the notes. I then made copies.On each copy I circled the notes for a specific scale. I did this for all twelve major scales and related modes. I then drew a blank neck, and I showed which fingers were used when playing the scale. I had it memorized way before I finished making the charts.

Very cool! I’ve been playing guitar 55 years professionally in all genres. Started out as a sax player learned all my music theory, chords scales, etc. but wasn’t able to improvise on the sax very well at 14 years old. Then I picked up the guitar and just started playing by ear. I took my knowledge of music from the sax and applied it to the guitar. Obviously, I did not memorize the notes or the scales. I just figured out the pattern of minor scales major scales blues, major and minor Pentatonix scales, harmonic minor scales. And when I improvise I use key centers. I’m not a jazz musician at all, but it’s funny, sometimes I play with jazz musicians and we’re not even playing jazz tunes and I manage to improvise through the changes better than they do for some reason. Kind of mind baffling. But I really do like this video and your approach. I’m dyslexic so sometimes my brain just plays funny tricks on me when I look at all these notes trying to figure out what they are. You figured out some cool tools. I’m gonna have to give it a shot. Thank you!

It's the first time I'm trying to learn guitar theory, and you make everything seem less overwhelming🙏 I feel like I'm getting the hang of the circles of 4ths and 5ths and the rectangle and stack method. If I were to add one remark, then I'd say that the videos would hugely benefit seeing you play the guitar whilst instructing on the various topics. I say this because at this moment I'm struggling to position my fingers on the fretboard, whilst playing the rectangle and stack. Otherwise, love your videos! Keep it up 🤘
