This video is deep. The song, on the surface, is about looking back at past memories from ones life, buts its much more than that. She is looking back at memories of her life, knowing she wouldn't be here for much longer. At the same time, it's almost like she's seeing into the future, looking through our eyes. She knew that one day, her loved ones/descendents and the world (us) would look back at her life, her works and her legacy with fondness, sadness, happiness, and gratitude. Her pleading for more life at the end is heartbreaking and reminds us that our lives here are fleeting. Thank you Minnie, for sharing your voice and your light with us. Wherever you are, I hope you are at peace.

@@balston113 Memory Lane was the first release off Minnie Riperton’s fifth and final album simply titled Minnie. The single peaked at number 16 on the Billboard R&B charts after a 22-week run. The song is a bittersweet memory for Riperton fans (and her family), as it was written, recorded, and released during Riperton’s three-year battle with breast cancer. She lost her battle just two months after Memory Lane’s release - in July of 1979. She was only 31 years old. FUN FACTS: Riperton revealed on The Tonight Show on August 24, 1976, that she had undergone a mastectomy due to breast cancer. At the time of her diagnosis, Riperton found out her cancer had already spread to the lymphatic system, and was given about six months to live. She continued touring in 1977 and 1978. Riperton was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph from August 1970 until her death in July 1979. Together, Riperton and Rudolph had two children; music engineer Marc Rudolph (b. 1968) and actress/comedian Maya Rudolph (b. 1972). Riperton’s daughter, Saturday Night Live actress Maya Rudolph, was a child when Lovin’ You was recorded. According to the liner notes from Riperton’s Petals compilation CD, the melody to Lovin’ You was created as a distraction for Maya when she was a baby, so Riperton and Richard Rudolph could spend time together. Extreme lymphedema immobilized her right arm in early 1979 and in the Memory Lane video her right arm remains in a fixed position.

You could it hear it in her voice, and see it in her eyes how much she’s going to miss her family and friends, and fans. She sang her goodbye in this one… you can literally feel it.

She looks so sad. You can see the pain. She was a beautiful person, gone too soon. I remember when she passed on in 1979. It was on the evening news. ''Loving You'' holds fond childhood memories from 1975. I have my dads original copy.
@12thFan232 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree you can see the pain clearly in her eyes. I also notice she never moved her right arm and they used the book to distract. The cancer must have too away the use of her right arm. Pretty damn sad.

@@12thFan23 When I typed my comment I had no clue I’d see Cancer hit my immediate family. My mom passed away November 5 2021 from cancer. It was a short battle and she didn’t suffer . I miss her and only a few weeks ago I filmed and posted a tribute video for mom showing Minnie Riperton’s “Perfect Angel”LP , it’s my moms original copy. The song Lovin’ You is from the album.

Here listening in 2022, Ive always loved this woman’s voice and it breaks my heart every time I’m reminded of her passing. She’s holding back tears and I’m holding back tears watching her sadness.She was so young, talented and beautiful. Her family needed her but God needed her too. I wish she could’ve lived longer but her music will live on forever.

My mother passed from breast cancer last year. Thankful I had her in my life way into adulthood. Although, it doesn’t negate the pain. Wishing all those who’ve lost ones ones peace. Hearing Minnie Riperton sing this song, hits differently.

I never heard this one before today even though I grew up with Boomer parents as a Millennial. I've only heard Loving You/Inside My Love and know her story. This song and video are so touching. Her laments and cries to be saved brings tears, the fear on her face is palpable. A young mother, deeply in love with her husband, having her life snuffed out so early. So unfair but I hope she is happy, with health, wherever she is. Her daughter looks like her and I bet it is so nice, though bittersweet, to have this piece of their mother❤❤❤
