Memory Moments - Animal Assisted Therapy for Those with Dementia

Animal assisted therapy (AAT) is a key component of the Lakeview Ranch model of specialized care for persons with dementia-related behavioral challenges. Numerous benefits from AAT have been documented at Lakeview Ranch, including increasing resident's social interaction and communication and reducing their agitation and anxiety levels. Introducing effective Animal Assisted therapy, however, requires consideration of a number of challenges -- including health issues, regulations, the attitude of staff members, program costs. In addition, as identified in the current study, there are important nuances to consider with regard to the type of animals and inter-species activities that are involved. The current study examines the lessons learned from ten years of providing animal assisted therapy in a specialized dementia care setting.

I found that with my father, who loved music, perked up completely when I played him music he enjoyed since he was a young man. He was Mexican and he loved the Mexican songs of the 50's and he loved classical music. He loved hearing Ravel' s Bolero and Blue Danube. It jogs back the memory to times they had in the past.

I was browsing at therapeutic animals towards other animals, just for the sake of cuteness, but your video caught my eye... My dad is on the brink of dementia, short-term memory loss, its heart breaking and I am not prepared for this. still in the state of denial or just clueless on how to help him (all the above).. I am used to my dad, on always getting his things together or memorizing things.. Now I am repeating things a minute later, even if we wrote it down.. but this?... I have 2 dogs, I didn't think abt this

Actually people realized long time ago that animals could help them emotionally. Now it is recognized as animal assisted therapy, but it is already happening in eveyone's home who adopted a cat, a dog etc. :)
