I once read that, in order to keep working and sustaining his family, Patrick Bronte was courageous enough to have an eye operation performed without any anaesthetic, as it wasn't available at the time. Such an extraordinary family. Tragic that none of them survived for very long or had any children.

Thank you so much. This was a treat. JANE EYRE has been my favorite classic novel since I was 9 years old. I've reread it many times and watched every filmed version I could access. Tonight, I was revisiting Wuthering Heights and came to see where the Brontes lived. Such talents in one family, but such unfortunate early deaths.....

A beautifully crafted tour and history lesson. I will never get to England but the tours I would want to take are the places that you take us to. Such an informative video full of information and background stories. Apart from Bramwell's struggle with drink, I get the impression that the Bronte home was a house full of love. Such a tragedy that Patrick had to see his children die well before their time. Thank you Simon and Will and I cannot wait for the next video. Have a great weekend!

Thank you for watching as usual. So glad you liked it. It is indeed tragic that Patrick outlived them and I agree with you, I am sure whatever they had to deal with the love of the family was the strongest force. All the best.

I first read “Jane Eyre” when I was 10. It made such an impression on me that I soon read “Wuthering Heights”. The Brontë sisters, their family, friends, visits to other places and life experiences have fascinated me for years. While I’ve seen parts of the parsonage in Haworth in other films and videos your video is so much more expansive, and the narration added so much. Seeing the artifacts from the sisters and the rest of their family and friends’ lives (especially the apostles’ cupboard) was the best part of all. As I have ancestors who come from near Haworth I now plan to not only visit where they lived but to also go on pilgrimage to the Brontë parsonage and the surrounding moors. Thank you for bringing the sisters to life for me.😊

What are the chances! I came across Wuthering Heights after reading Jane Eyre and I was ten as well and then became fascinated by the Bronté family and how they wrote novels together sitting down. Amazing how their literary minds and the extensive imagination would leave such a lasting impression on people.

Hello Simon and Will. I really loved this video. This family has touched me more than I expected. I suppose it’s because I have two daughters of my own, 28 and 30 and I think how, in this day and age, life is really just beginning. The Bronte sisters accomplished so much in their short lives. Truly amazing. As for Bramwell I can’t help but feel sorry for him. It can’t have been easy being the only boy, he struggled and failed to find a career to suit him and I’m sure Patrick was the kind of man with expectations. The house itself was beautiful and it was great to see so many of the family’s belongings have been preserved. I loved the Fragments of a Dress display. For me it seemed to represent past and present, something once beautiful, complete and vibrant now hollow, empty, only a memory remains. This video was only 21:04 minutes and I’ve spent well over an hour here. So much to see and think about. I can’t thank you enough. These last two videos I will definitely be revisiting again. Take care of each other and have a great week. Btw I sometimes have trouble when leaving a comment. My comment gets submitted but I always scroll down and like other peoples comments and my comment is usually duplicated. If I go to delete one comment they both get deleted. I have just had to redo my entire comment. So if it’s duplicated again ignore it. I have no idea why this happens. For some strange reason it seems to be when I’m on UK channels. ❤

Incredible words Jill, lovely to hear your thoughts and passion for this subject. We have learnt so much we didn't know about their lives in making the videos and visiting the wonderful places. We are so lucky to still have them to explore. We do take it for granted these days ,the wonderful leaps in technology that every day keep us alive. The lives the Brontes lived back then was all to common, and when we head back to Haworth one last time later in the series we will touch on the mortality rate as it was shocking in that area.

Thank you for your detailed filming and narration. It's wonderful to see so many items have been returned to the home and I love the way they are displayed. I have studied historical costuming as a hobby, and am aware how few intact garments of this period still exist. Many people re-used fabric when styles changed, or cut up garments to make children's clothing, because they couldn't afford to buy new. It was good to see Charlotte enjoy some comforts paid for with proceeds from her writing. After learning about their lives, and reading their works, this was the final step in knowing what they were like. The hair jewelry really brought it home. I will likely watch this again, but also look forward to views of cheerful boats next week. Cheers!

People need to bear in mind, what they see in Haworth today is NOTHING like Haworth when Patrick Brontë arrived. Haworth wasn’t a pretty little village. It was an industrial town with many cotton mills in the area, grimy and busy. TB was rampant as was cholera from contamination of the water supplies not only through industrial pollution but also run off from the overstuffed churchyard, which contained thousands of burials in a tiny space. All in all it was not a pleasant place to live and deadly to raise children.

As a trip to England to tour the house is rather pricey from America, I am soo grateful for this video! Everything about this was perfect! The music just right, your pleasant speaking voice and all the little details you pointed out. I can’t imagine cooking a dinner over a kitchen fireplace. A lot of work every day, especially without running water. We often view the period and their lives as romantic but it was actually far from it. So much work just to live and way too much tragedy. I’m glad the sisters were able to free themselves by using their vivid imaginations as an escape. Their brother coped otherwise…another tragedy. Well, long-winded but just wanted to say hello & give thanks. 4 well deserved stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😊

Excellent video. I used to love visiting Haworth when I lived up in North Yorkshire. Took an American friend to the Bronte House one year and loved it. Would love to visit again one day.

Great coverage of the house and contents guys. This completes my(Ian) education of this talented family. JaneEyre novel is my favorite. Can’t wait for next weeks video of Hebden Bridge, stamping ground of one of our favourite mudlarkers, Tom Burleigh.

I throughly enjoyed this video, but it was over too soon 😢!!! I am very tempted to say more please! The handmade books, letters, and also the clothing, especially the shawls, were very much my favorite. What a humble, loving and yet tragic life that Patrick Bronte had! Thank you again!

Ahh sorry it was over to soon, but glad you enjoyed it. Yes it was a tragic life for Patrick. No one wanted to outlive their children. How he managed to deal with that I don't know.

Such a shame that Charlotte's husband Rev Arthur Bell Nicholls couldn't stay in the parsonage. He would have kept the house intact, wouldn't remodel and all the artefacts would be still there. It is quite ironic that Patrick didn't want Charlotte to marry Arthur and yet after Charlotte's death in 1855 it was Arthur who cared for old Patrick for 6 years till Patrick's death in 1861 and then they kicked him out. Luckily he had a lovely family to come back to in Ireland, he remarried and lived to be 87. His second wife was his 11 years younger cousin, Mary Anna Bell who had met Charlotte in Ireland, Arthur took Charlotte to Ireland after their marriage to meet his family. The two ladies took a liking to each other and after Charlotte's death, Mary Anna kept her memory alive and displayed many of Bronte mementoes that Arthur brought from Haworth. What is sad is that she gave Charlotte's wedding dress and gloves to her niece, christened Charlotte Bronte (Bell), and she later burned it! Can you believe it?!

I remember going to the Parsonage in the early 50s, a grammar school trip. It was awful. Very cold, I remember - no central heating

Its improved since then. There are radiators in the rooms.
