@megansolner9078
@megansolner9078 7 жыл бұрын
LeTerneau Tunes he has good ideas, however he is wrong in stating that men are 2 times more suicidal or commit suicide 2 times more than women. The levels are roughly equal between men and women, however it is the methods in which men choose tend to be more effective in killing them self. Men choose more violent methods, which unfortunately lead to more deaths. Women choose less violent methods in which someone has the opportunity to intervene, or the method simply does not complete the act resulting in lower rates of suicide in women than men. However the percentage of suicidal men and women are about the same.

To all the people in the comment tread. This video won't trigger any feminists. And do you want to know why? Because feminists has been talking about this a long time. Part of feminism is about fighting against the machoculture that is highlighted in this video. These men in the video share their stories of how they've been told from very early age to hide their emotions etc. Fighting against the machoculture is fighting for men's emotions. Supporting feminism will not only make it more equal between people of different gender but also benefit men.

Feeling the same here, as another feminist and woman. Like, seriously, the conversation should be about the issues this video discussed, not "feminists are the boogeyman!". I want to help. So do other feminists I know. The best way to do that is for all of us to get on with conversations on the actual topic, but that's kind of hard when so many conversations end up being about feminists and how they're terrible and bad, rather than literally anything said in this video.

I'm female, but I was raised by men who were in touch with their emotions. And I'm glad for that. It always seems to foreign to me that men say they were TAUGHT to not show emotion. Because...my grandfather cried. My dad cried. The women and men around me both cried. And it was never seen as bad, ever. I'm grateful for that and will continue to instill that in my son.

@HanbanSimpson
@HanbanSimpson 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Anna- that sentence really got me too and I realised that it's so true. As humans we are in a position of power. Unfortunately we use that power to destroy the lives of creatures we think of as less important- for example, chickens, pigs, cows, sheep, etc. Most people find it hard to see the deaths of these animals as heartbreaking because they simply don't value the animals life, and believe they have the power to decide what to do with an animal. Many humans find it hard to empathise with other animals because we have been conditioned to see them as less than us, and to see their bodies as objects for us to use. I hope this was useful for you, it is possible to try your best to care for every creature and to empathise with even the most different of animals. I hope you choose to. :)

Society pushes us to think what we should be. Putting up barriers of difference to separate us, instead of taking our unchangeable features as fact and realizing no one is any more or less than another. We are all people and as soon as we all can transcend our own stupid first thought about someone and hold people to the standard of just being a person, not a black, Asian, woman, man, or anything else. Just put the person's character and personality first and you might find that acceptance and rejection of the people you want in your life is much easier and you won't be prejudice. Big +

To me, being a man means I'm expected to be assertive, I'm expected to be secure. If there are two ways - "the optimal way", and "the way that fits me" in sort of a deeper artistic/philosophical sense - I'm expected to go the optimal way. And these expectations are a double edged sword. I'm already a very anxious person, struggling with depression and such, and so that feeling that I'm going to be socially rejected because I'm not the image of strength, assertiveness and security is pretty overwhelming. But at the same time, I am not expected to be passive or submissive about it, which has its advantages in terms of driving me, in the long run, towards an active approach in dealing with my mental health. But I would have grown up in a culture within my group of relatives and family that being a man who expresses emotion and is emotionally considerate is alright, a good thing, so to that end I don't have that really nasty issue that some men have to face where they feel like they just shouldn't be thinking or talking about having something like depression. In any case, I like this, the placing of ourselves under a microscope. If we all were more judicious and less arbitrary with the expectations we place on others based on things we assume but don't really understand about them, well, I think the world would be much more bearable for nearly every human on the planet.
@cryoshakespeare4465
@cryoshakespeare4465 7 жыл бұрын
My bias is to suspect that you're being facetious with that comment, but whether you are or are not, my answer is the same. It's not really about being a victim, or considering ones life in the context of "oh, the great many injustices". The reason why people should speak out about what makes life difficult for them is not one of self-gratification and indulging in complaining, but instead it's largely to help us understand each other. Think about it, we would go to a doctor and explain what's been ailing us for the purpose of that doctor understanding us and being able to help fix the situation, not for the enjoyment factor in complaining and playing the victim (granted, there are people who indulge in complaining - but even they have things that ail them too, it's not for us to just ignore them for one small thing). To that end, we talk about what troubles us in our interactions with society so that other people in society can reflect on and work to change that society through their influence, their voice, their actions. And likewise, we listen back and accommodate. But to ignore the voices of others to protect our selfish interests - that is acting like a little bitch. And men, women alike, every damn human under the sun, has to play their part in not being a selfish and self-centred little bitch. To renounce one's responsibility to the people and world around us is cowardice, and whether I consider avoiding cowardice to be a part of my manhood or part of my humanity, I don't let my voice nor the voices of others be drowned out by bigotry.
@cryoshakespeare4465

No indeed, I'm not saying any human is objectively compelled to do anything for one another. I am saying they are responsible to do things for one another. Responsibility is not based on an objective truth. Responsibility is based on "people with power agree that something is important for whatever reason, and if you don't do it, you're probably going to be put to shame or in some other way disadvantaged in a way you probably want to avoid." That's your motivation. It just so happens that society generally holding people responsible for being good to one another is a positive.
@cryoshakespeare4465
@cryoshakespeare4465 7 жыл бұрын
Well, then we seem to mostly agree. Yet still, people hold one another responsible. One can argue about whether people are obligated or not to be nice to each other, but at the end of the day, most of society will enforce good conduct on each other even without a reason. This isn't a matter of my opinion versus yours, that's just what happens. So why you take issue with people asking for good conduct to be applied to them is questionable to me. You say they take the stance of victim, and yet you phrase that as a negative even though most of society accepts being good to one another as a rule of thumb. Why bother with your stance of reasoning? It changes none of the realities, and just puts you in the bracket that most people would think of as intolerant.

Well, we arrive at an impasse it seems, a mere difference of opinion and perception of fact. Hey, at least for two people who disagree we managed to keep things civil. I'm literally only attracted to men who cry, if a guy is like super macho, calls other guys "pussies" for showing emotion, it's an EXTREME turn off. Not just for me for a lot of girls. Men pressure to hyper masculine isn't imposed by women, ask any guy who's the one person they confide their emotions to and 90% will tell you it's a woman they know. THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE between pressure on men vs. pressure on women. Men have oppressed women in the past, giving them the "easier" roles in society and labeled them as weak, thus BY DEFAULT men will have to take on the big responsibilities and must be seen as powerful.

My brother is 15 but he's still my baby brother. Growing up I had to battle family and friends for him because they expected so much. "Don't play with dolls" "Stop crying you're a man" "You have need to do more work because you're a boy". It's disheartening to see boys have so much on their plate and always expected to never express how they're feeling. I'm glad that times are changing. Slowly but surely.

"Empathy is hardest for those in power." I think to apply this blanketly to men is to seriously misunderstand men and how they are raised. The reason men have a such a hard time with empathy isn't because we have power. In fact I would even say that men don't have power. Yes a few men have it but as history shows men do use power to support men. We have a hard time with it because we are denied empathy from an early age. But of course that is lost in the rush to assume and declare that men have power over women because that's what gets the Shares, Likes, and people going "THIS!". I have to say this is a big contrast from the video about women. In that video there is no mention of women needing to acknowledge the experiences and struggles of men. And I would be find with that if this video on men didnt have one of the first guys literally backtracking to say that men don't have it tough. I appreciate what this video is trying to do but it seems clear that there is still an ideological angle here that still seeks to put men in some privileged position and make them out to be better off than women.

+nellie Karlsson Not sure what you're addressing in my comment. My comment points out that the statement made by the man at 0:26, is a flawed, and small minded statement, and I gave points to go a long with it. "heh, not that we have it tough" isn't just an off handed statement, it is a statement that made it though editing. They shot way more than four minutes and sixteen seconds of video, then they had to edit it down to the statements they felt really fit what they wanted to communicate. I assume the guy at 0:23 said more than "ah yes, gender, let's talk", but they didn't put him in the video again. They did however decide to put in a guy laugh at the idea that men have it tough. Was their goal to laugh at the idea that men have it tough too, or was their goal to show that men hide their pain behind a veneer of "the invulnerable male", who try to laugh at the idea of struggle? I don't know.

Alex Marte You miss read me if you think you're UNLIKE ME. I too want to talk about bothsides. I think it's important to note that saying "men don't have it easy", doesn't equal "women do have it easy". I think no victim of assault abuse or rape should be ignored, regardless of their gender. Did you know that till 2012 the Department of Justice's definition of rape was "The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will"? Legally speaking till 2012 a male could not be raped; and if you're wonder if that effected statistic, it did. The new definition is “Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.” but even this definition only includes penetration, and is missing enveloping. People have petitioned to have enveloping added, but it hasn't happened yet. A woman could have sex with an unwilling man, and it wouldn't be rape, because she didn't penetrate him. You could argue, "well men rape women more than women rape men, so why even make it into an issue?" I ask, why ignore any victims, and further more, based on the Department of Justice's definitions, the data has been in no way been collected accurately, so we really don't know the ratios. Additional data, many female rape victims self lubricate, self lubrication is not consent. Male rape victims can also become erect due to stimulation, but again, an erection is not consent. Data from prisons where this is a massive amount of male rape shows that gay men and bi-sexual men are far, far, far more likely to report being raped, bringing to question, are gay and bi men targeted in prison or are straight men just far, far, far less likely to report? Side note, the largest reason to be in prison in the US is for drug related charges, so we're not talking about murders and child molesters being raped in prison, we're talking about people who got caught selling pot, getting raped for five years in prison. Again, this in no way devalues rape and assault on women. Making this male vs female, hurts us all. It's important to remember that there are good people and bad people in all demographics, trying to look at it as just this race, or just this gender, is a really bad way to look at it; it make victims become invisible to you and perpetrators become invisible to you. You said, "they are nothing compared to the way things are the other way around" but I disagree. Even it only one male was raped for every hundred million females that were raped, that no reason to consider that one males suffering, "nothing", or to let that rapist go ignored.
@btdtpro
@btdtpro 7 жыл бұрын
Jay Grey Yeah, it get's labeled under sexual assault. When reported, they don't go untracked, but it does create needlessly skewed statistics and perceptions. As well as effects sentencing. It doesn't really make sense to have two different legal definitions for the same exact sexual action, just reversed. I think to some degree it comes from the wrong thinking that sex, including consensual sex, devalues women but doesn't devalue men, therefor to force sex on a woman is worse than forcing sex on a man, because to force sex a woman is forcibly devaluing her, where with a man it doesn't really devalue him, so not as big a problem.

I understand the struggle of not being allowed to cry. I’m not allowed to cry, even as a female child. I believe that all emotions should be shown to a certain extent, the same extent, because no one likes it when we’re too happy, it annoys them, no one likes it when we’re too angry, it hurts them. Crying is just a form of relieving yourself of these feelings, so let them relieve, let them dispose the garbage, let them cleanse.

In my class my teacher was doing this thing we're he would say something, and we have to say if it was positive or negative. He said a man crying or is it okay for a man to cry. All the girls said yes, but all the boys said no.

people are people that's all that needs to be said to everyone. I'm done with the labels and picking a side, please, can we just stop trying to prove everyone else and start proving ourselves. If only this world was about who you are instead of who we are (supposed to be), we wouldn't care less about who is who and what it means to be a man or a women. Jezus I'm so done, so so so so done. I just wish that it was fine for everyone to behave the way they want to behave. Why is this such a big deal?

Fathers play a significant role in the development of the male youth - good fathers, not just a father who impregnate and move on. The examples of life, the trails of appreciation, the problem-solving, the strong sense of responsibility - just a few examples of the maturation of man.

For some reason I was expecting some feminist bullshit but this is actually a great vid, most men are like this.
@purplemonsterr

while this is in no way "bullshit," this is actually very much feminism as it shows men very equal to women emotionally, and that they struggle with feeling they have to be "manly" and can't show weakness and cry in front of people. it also addresses the topic of women not feeling equal in treatment to men and men often not seeing there is an issue because they themselves do not face it. 3:07

Older men teach these ways to younger men. Because of what they been thru, and the experience they have. Yes all men are different. But the lessons are for you to learn from, and to help you. Mainly because of how the world is, and other people will be towards you thru out your life.

The thing I hate the most is the idea that men have to always be strong, hide their emotions and that crying makes them weak. One of my classmates (a boy) recently told us about his depression and how it was really hard for him to open up because he is a male and men don't often talk about their emotions. That's just so wrong :(

I, a young woman raised in a safe western society, with many girl friends and few boy friends, often have a hard time understanding how men think. Or even THAT men think, to be totally honest. My whole childhood I have learned from older women, between the lines of course, that men only want sex, men in group are dangerous and men only see your body. And to replace this kind of fundamental thought, deep inside my head, will be hard. Right now I do not even have proof that it is necessary to remove it. I don't really know where I am going with this. What do men even think about on a day to day basis?? Why are they afraid of crying? Or whatever reason it is that they feel that they can't cry in public?

To me both genders have excactly the same responsebilities. One exception. In a man woman relationship the man does the heavy phisical labor. Because he is bigger has more muscle and has thicker bones. In most situations that is. If the woman is 6 foot something 200 pounds and muscular and the man is small and not muscular this is reversed.

Women attempt suicide more than men, men succeed more at suicide. This has to do with the methods men and women use. Men are more likely to use firearms/jumping off cliffs/hanging to commit suicide. Most gun-owners tend to be male so they have access to a more lethal way of committing suicide. Having access to a firearm is a big game changer when it comes to suicide

I like how women don't come into this video and start complaining about women's problems. Sadly, anytime women's problems are discussed, the subject of discussion is usually along the lines of, "men deal with this too. What about them? Why won't women ever talk about men?" It's because people talk about problems that affect them personally and that's not wrong
