What I like is that when going back and watching the first movie, nothing contradicts or doesn’t make sense. And the relationship between J & K has been consistent throughout the entire series. The reveal doesn’t rely on setting up false stakes or forcing a narrative that doesn’t suit the characters. Because, it totally tracks that K would absolutely watch over J as he grew up! He watched over his former girlfriend from a distance all those years. I can totally see him checking in on J like a surrogate son.

It actually makes a lot of sense, and explains how in the first movie he seems eager to hiring J over the more "obvious" choices. He already knows that he will become great, but also exhausted because he understands that it will take a lot of work, to teach him to become that person.

What I love about the time travel in this movie is that they actually go out of the way to show you how K solved the case first time when J wasn’t there. A lot of other time travel movies ignore that. For example, in Back to the Future, Marty gives Goldie Wilson the idea of being mayor or his mother the idea to name her kid Marty, but that couldn’t have happened the original time. However, in this movie, you can actually see the clues at each crime scene that original K used when he was on his own without J's help. Griff was a great plot device for this too because of his ability to see the alternate versions. Like when he gave the "amazing" clue that led J to figuring out it was referencing the Mets, it just means that when K was alone in the original version, he probably gave him a different clue that K would have been able to figure out that led to the same place. Also, you assumed that when the nerd who gave J the time jump device and said "You were there!" he was referring to present J being in the past, but he wasn't, it was about little kid James. I love how all of the little breadcrumbs add up.
@antonioarreola3097
@antonioarreola3097 Ай бұрын
It's also neat how Griff isn't just some all-knowing entity that is conveniently unhelpful, he CAN see all possible outcomes, but because of so many variables he can't determine which is going to happen until just before it does. They did the same with Mantis in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" game.

As much as people say the conclusion for J joing MIB is because K watched over J growing up and assuming it was a closed time loop i would argue that it isn't a closed time loop. The guy saying to J before he goes back to the past that he was there, in my opinion is actually refering to little James being at K's death. In the altered past that K died James wasn't neutralize and so his altered memory were causing the temporal headaches due to it being a major event. In the original timeline older Boris was never back at the space launch. We can also tell agent J wasn't there because Boris did end up going to Lunar Max. This means K did get the arknet up without J in the orgial timeline. The altered timeline before J goes back also shows up J got into MIB on his own with a different partner recruiting him during that timeline events of the first movie. I would assume the events of the second movie didn't happen in that timeline because it was K that hid the Light on earth and wouldn't be around to do that. Once J return to the present we have to remember that Boris breaking out of Lunar Max never happened so in other words we can assume the J from that timeline disappeared at that moment when K says that J hung up on him on the phone so J would be able to return to the future with out 2 of him being present.

Soap used to have lye in it. This simple ingredient caused people's skin to age at a much quicker rate than the rest of their body. As such, Sean Connery was 31 when he filmed the first James Bond, and by today's standards, he would look 45. So hiring a man in his 40s today to play a 29 year old in the 60s actually makes a lot of sense.

The revelation at the end is absolutely a retcon. The first movie gives absolutely zero indication of K recruiting J(ames) for any reason other than the fact that the latter is clearly built for doing the job. That being said, the revelation that K had been looking out for J since his father's death was a legitimately touching moment. It's a retcon that works because it doesn't necessarily negate anything we had seen before, but also the execution itself doesn't feel super forced or telegraphed. Considering this was (as of now) the final time both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones shared the screen in an MIB movie, I always felt the final scene between the two was meta. It's almost like it's Will saying thank you to TLJ, who replies, "It's been my privilege"; and not just J thanking K. While I still think the first movie is without question the best in the series, this was actually pretty good sequel, with a MUCH better story and dynamic between J & K, in comparison to that of MIB2. Easily my second-favorite in the series.
@wackyvorlon

As far as retcons go, it’s one of the best out there. K is so emotionally constipated that there is no way he would have let on that he was watching J since childhood. The first movie would have played out in exactly the same way. Even though it is an idea they didn’t have until after the second movie, it still fits perfectly. It creates no real contradictions.

@@wackyvorlon Plus outside of J's NYPD background, we never get any indication of his personal life outside the job anyway in that first movie. And even when they touch upon his "absentee" father in this movie, it's done pretty perfectly because for one thing: it's played for laughs as a potential throwaway line; and another, they never bring it up again until the very end. As retcon-y as it feels in the grand scheme, overall it really does work.

I love how this movie shows why K really wanted James to become an agent.

Legion on FX had one of the most interesting 'old/young villain meets themself' confrontations. Which oddly enough, also starred Jamaine Clement.

In Britain we often have a piece of cheese with apple pie. In fact there is a rhyme about it - Apple pie without some cheese is like a hug without a squeeze.

16:15 When I was a kid, I remember my grandmother had a cross-stich thing hung on the wall in her kitchen that read , "Apple pie without some cheese, is like a kiss without a squeeze." It's been over 45 years since I first remember reading that and have still never tried eating apple pie with a side of cheese.

Mike Colter is the name of the actor playing J's dad. If Simone really likes him, you guys should react to Jessica Jones and Luke Cage sometime. He stars in there as Marvel hero Luke Cage.
