I loved this film and will watch it over and over. Rory Kinnear is an amazing actor, they both are, but Rory plays most of the male parts and brilliantly, including most together in a pub scene. It features glorious shivers up spines and the highly unexpected, plus unique extreme effects to bodies, including becoming the Green Man. It is a parable, within a folk tale, within a nightmare.

This is definitely his moment to shine similar to James mcavoy from Split. Rory is basically doing what Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers did, in the most disturbing frightening way possible. It's a brilliant film, easily the best horror film released since Midsommar. There's just one issue that I have with it, which is the somewhat cop-out resolution, which is flatly prosaic and, interpreted as it seems to wish to be, undermines the narrative and atmosphere of the preceding film. But if you ignore the last few minutes, it is a masterpiece of atmosphere and originality.
@blazaybla22
@blazaybla22 Жыл бұрын
Spoilers for both Men and Watcher (I watched them both in the theater recently): The one thing I didn’t quite like about it is that it invites an interpretation that none of it happened as we were shown. The only part that is “independently confirmed” (ie witnessed by a pre-established third party, her friend) at the end is the car crash. I think this is great to have with movies like The Shining, Blair Witch Project etc going back to novels like Turn of the Screw where you can leave the audience guessing how much of it was really supernatural. However the idea of “it was all in her head” would completely undermine the entire theme of the movie for me, and while I generally love open-ended endings, in this case I wasn’t sure if I liked the implication that the conclusion could be ambiguous in that specific way. Compare with the conclusion of Watcher wherein the entire movie till that point is defined by ambiguity as to whether she’s imagining the threat, and then you walk out of the theater completely, thoroughly reinforced that the threat wasn’t all in her head which turns out to be the entire point of that movie. I’m not saying I didn’t feel there was room for some ambiguity at the end of Men but it felt a little bizarre to leave us with that possibility - it deliberately shows us that the only thing an impartial observer witnesses by the end is something entirely of this world, in contrast to what the protagonist has been dealing with for the entire movie. Perhaps if she had been seriously wounded in some bizarre and inexplicable way in the process of defeating the threat, and that wound were visible as well, that would at least solidly reinforce that she’s been through a grueling experience beyond just crashing her car. Even better would be some sign of her victory like, let’s say, all the clothes of the various personas strewn about her lawn. Visual confirmation that _something_ happened beyond just a car crash. Who knows, maybe showing the car was the director trying to do exactly that - but I would’ve liked more, I guess.

@iainrobb2076 Жыл бұрын
@@blazaybla22 I totally agree with you. The 'it was probably all in her head' possibility was the lamest way possible of ending Men. The intensity of its persecutory and supernatural atmosphere, with its various Occultist and folk mythological motifs, would suggest things haven't happened in her head, and she has genuinely entered some kind of otherworld: which wouldn't have represented itself after all that's happened during the climax in the overly prosaic and easily interpretable way it does to the main character, with her dead husband returning to tell her what he's told her anyway earlier in the film. Those last few minutes suck. It feels like a tacked-on ending forced by a distributor to make the film more digestible to lazy viewers.

It seems themes are drawn from the saying "all men are alike" in a psychological, possible sci-fi approach. Garland does a fantastic job at shedding light on truths grounded in reality and meshing them with hypothetical truths; often checking off boxes that classify his work as sci-fi, while establishing new trends that raise the genre as a whole. There is a reason that sci-fi enthusiasts love his work.

The first trailer was intriguing but I was still hesitant. After this trailer, I'm fully on board.

Every time A24 comes on screen I know it's going to be something spectacular. They do disturbing imagery and horror better than anybody else.

Same. I was on so many edibles 🤣 the ending I was both cringing (I'm a mom) while also dying laughing of delight seeing a man go through that. And they did such an awesome visual job

I did a survey where I got to see an unreleased version of this trailer and it was really cool to give feedback on it. I was able to give detailed reactions on the cinematography and story. They actually ended up changing a few things and didn’t include a part that I didn’t really like and it made the trailer so much better!
