To enter the cave system after heavy rain, means that their bravery exceeded their knowledge and sense of caution, to an excessive extent. I was a caver, in my student days, in S.Wales, the Mendips and the Burren area of the Republic of Ireland. We never entered limestone cave systems, with strong rivers running through them, after rainfall. That was a golden rule !

I've gone out into situations where I might get lost, stuck, or simply not make it back to the pick up point in time, out in the wilderness. I've packed everything I may need to survive for at least 3 + days by myself, and for all kinds of weather, and not once did I ever consider taking rice cakes with me as a survival food. I only take, among other things, high energy bars, bags of trail mix, a few high calorie chocolate bars, lots of fresh beef jerky, hot cocoa packs, multi chocolate nut candy mix, fire starter, water proofed matches, a lighter, huge hunting knife, small knife, 4 silver survival blankets, (great for building a water proof shelter with branches), thin strong rope, fishing line and hooks, folded tin foil, a compass, 2 garbage bags, and all of this fits into a large fanny pack. I also wear multi layers of clothing that I can remove if too hot, and tie onto my belt if not needed. My moto - go for the day, prepare for the worst.

It makes me sad seeing comments about how dangerous caving is and how stupid cavers are. I've only been on one caving trip but I can't wait to go again. It's just plain fun to explore down there, nothing to do with being an adrenaline junkie. There are plenty of caves that are mapped/aren't a maze, don't have tiny spaces to squeeze through, and aren't susceptible to this. The place I went- lava beds national monument- was safe enough for us middle schoolers. Look up photos of their fern cave or crystal ice cave. Just beautiful.

The so called “extreme levels of CO2” that were accumulating actually weren’t. The water would absorb enough of the CO2 so it’s not as much of a concern. Running out of oxygen was the real issue.

I did some crazy cave exploring or spelunking as they called it, in Colorado. Several places our bodies would barely squeeze through. We would let the largest man go first so the rest would know if they could fit. I will never do anything of that level again. Looking back it was straight crazy. My uncle led us well, but he didn't have the knowledge he thought he had. That was how he was.

Final words, if they find an access point to get in there again, he will be the first to go. Like the one pilot that got hijacked three times and on the final one landed on water and lived to tell about it. Some people just do not give up. But on the plus side if I do get a pilot, he is the man with his skills that I want flying my plane. Any man that can outsmart hijackers and keep the plane where he wanted it and not where he was told to go and land with no fuel close to a coast line where rescue can come quickly. Genius. Sadly though some get the impression that they survive that they can continue to do so and are unstoppable.
