"White Dress" is one of my absolute favorites. What's amazing is that it was completely improvised in the studio! (Lana just started singing while 'the tape' was rolling. The backing track was probably sweetened later, but Jack Antonoff just kept on playing as Lana sang her stream-of-consciousness poetry. It never broke down. Amazing.). I love how she juxtaposes "scene" with being "seen". Waitresses juggle a million things at once and when everything is running smoothly like a well-oiled machine you do feel a sense of empowerment-- like you "got this" or even "like a god" (of course how she was being seen in her tight dress by these businessmen was probably different than she thought at the time). Perfect timing to react to "White Dress" on the heels of her waitressing stint at The Waffle House in Florence, Alabama (Like I said in my email, I might be projecting but I think she's really just a simple, down home girl at heart). Insert applause @0.29-30.Great art is supposed to make you think and feel something (Lana and Taylor will be remembered fifty years from now. Most of the top pop artists today,....probably not) Maybe you should conduct a poll on what people think is the happiest Lana song 😉 Yeah, the song is sad and wistful in a good way. Lana has a knack for making nostalgia palpable. Great reaction, Mere, and I love your rainbow top!

white dress is one of those songs that really made me think about how much I appreciate Lana and her journey, she's faced so many bumps in her life and started from such simple beginnings, it's hard to remember that she once used to be regular girl who used to idolize famous artists just like us, because she's literally an idol herself now, she's been the blueprint of nearly every new artist that pops up these days, her impact and influence is insane, yet she remains so humble and lowkey. She has never lost herself throughout those years, she's always been herself and continues to do so, and this song really shows that. she's a simple girl at heart.

I also feel like this is Lana coming to the realization that she wasn’t seen as a waitress in a “white dress” but a waitress in a “tight dress” which is a why she was made to feel “like a god” and so powerful especially at the “men and music business conference”

you are so right, this album can definitely come off as sad and it gives off “i miss when everything was simple” or “i had no idea what i was getting myself into.” vibes. the albums ultimate message is about what fame does to you and how it restricts you dark but just a game focuses on the topic and it’s definitely worth a listen🤍
@lorenavasques8657 Жыл бұрын
Fun fact: she was just freestyling the lyrics at the studio, so they decided to open the mic and record it. The result was so good that they kept it, just add the strings and melody and put it as the first song of the album. She did and absolutely amazing art! Thank you so much for this reaction, and you look gorgeous!! 😍 Violet for Roses would be a good next song, she sounds happier and more confident! ❤

This song breaks my heart every time. I was personally 19 and in Orlando when i made some decisions that affected the entire course of my life, and the thought of looking back on that time and feeling like maybe i'd be better off if I'd chosen differently just shatters me in a way that is similar to how her vocals feel like they are about to break at any moment. I would just recommend you go right through to the next song on the album "Chemtrails Over the Country Club"

Wow, such a good song, and always love hearing your take on Lana's songs. I actually stopped listening to Lana back when Ultraviolence came out. I remember that I was playing that and talking about the song with a female friend from work and she looked at me and told me that I was scaring her. I felt so self-conscious and embarrassed and I felt like an abuser. I apologized and changed the music and I forgot about Lana for a few years. Then recently, I played a Lana song on KZbin and then you started to pop up on my feed. I clicked on your video and I got hooked on Lana once again thanks to you. The cool thing about all of this is that between Ultraviolence and "Did You Know There Is A Tunnel Under Ocen BLVD" there have been like 7 albums in between and I missed them all. And I love Lana but I can't fall down a 7 album long rabbit hole to explore Lana's music, I just don't have the time. But I do have 15 minutes every couple of days to devote to you as you remind me why I fell in love with Lana and also as you introduce me to all the beautiful music that I missed over the past 8 years. Thanks, Mere :)

Very lame of that friend to judge you like that for listening to a song. Glad you found your way back to Lana's music though 😊
@josepinzon1515 Жыл бұрын
@emilyb.8219 it's all good. Looking back at the lyrics of the song, I should have been more aware that the song might have been triggering for some. I think the reason that I felt self-conscious also had to do with the fact that I am a large cis hetero male and somehow Lana's music feels like it is written from one woman to other female identifying individuals and I just felt like an intruder listening to Lana. So that day when my friend felt scared, it kind of felt like I was taking something away from her that she deeply valued, and I didn't want her to lose Lana. That more than anything was what made me super self-conscious, yk?

WE DO LOVE A GARDEN PIC AND SOUND BOWL MOMENT 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I love Lana but I agree her songs are so emotional sometimes, maybe that’s just my pregnancy brain or all the emotions that come up now from seeing clearly being 100% sober the last few years. She so relatable, 9:30 thinking back to being 19 and so invincible and dumb, now closer to 30 and I feel so thankful for how close I’ve come but also sad for that 19 year old girl that was just so lost in life. But life deals us cards and we take it turn it into what we can 🖤 Yesss she was at a Waffle House in Muscle Shoals Alabama lol that’s about 30 mins from where I grew up lol!

white dress for me is like the chemtrails version of old money from her ultraviolence album because both of the songs invoke a feeling of instense nostalgia with a hint of bittersweetness.

I like the switch from white dress to tight dress. White being associated with purity and her naivety before entering the music business, and her looking back and realizing that the men giving her attention may have only been doing so because the dress was a tight one, and not because they valued her music.

Mere, Thank You❣ I'm so glad you gave White Dress a listen😊 It set the tone for this beautiful, nostalgic, wistful folk album. It's an easy album to listen to~ perfect for Summer afternoons on the porch watching the kids play & drinking lemonade or a sweet tea. That's what Chemtrails is for me. I think you should consider staying in this area of Lana's career~ NFR, Chemtrails, Blue Banisters. We know how Ocean Blvd has wrecked all of us lol I still can't listen to Kintsugi & Fingertips without having an ugly cry😂😭 I even teared up listening to White Dress just now! You did beautifully & I appreciate your insight💛 Chemtrails is filled with sweet, mellow songs. Less angst, less vices (hardly any), more friendships are explored, the music is very light and free. I think you'll continue to enjoy Chemtrails as well as the masterpiece that is NFR and Blue Banisters which is a blend of eras, as you know. Lana is the epitome of nostalgia in sound and lyrics and, even if it's not meant to be sad, that wistfulness is emotional for many people. Sometimes it's just the notes & the keys that bring on emotion & that's why instrumental music can be just as emotional. Even when Lana isn't trying to evoke sadness she still does sometimes. It's a blend of us, our temperament and life circumstances and Lana, her notes, delivery and words. Not everyone gets it, but you do and that's why Lana stirs your heart♥️ You're doing great, thank you for everything, we look forward to more reactions! Try not to let all the suggestions from everyone stress you out. We just get excited🎀

hi Mere, first of all, thank you for your content, I have multiple mental illnesses and I've always felt like Lana was able to turn my thoughts and emotions into something sad, yet beautiful...she makes me feel so understood, I've always related to her art, even before I got diagnosed, and with time, I am finally starting to learn why that is. your analysis of Lana's songs is so incredibly helpful, even though you're not diagnosing her of course, I don't need to know which mental illnesses Lana suffers from to be able to name my inner thoughts through her lyrics and poetry. truly, thank you thank you thank you. also, do you think you could react to the songs BAD DISEASE and JUNKY PRIDE? they are from her unreleased album Sirens and I think that your reaction would be really interesting. thank you one more time and I wish you the best, take care❤

Another amazing reaction to a Lana song! Keep them coming. I would like to hear a reaction on "Beautiful," "Dark But Just a Game" (more fame / dangers of fame energy)," or anything else as I love hearing your thoughts. I like how you brought up Britney here and what fame can do to a person who gets it young, but it does impact all people. Some people feel uncomfortable with it. I hadn't thought of the difference between the proximity of waitressing and that of creating her art and putting it out there. The struggle between wanting to remain at a distance while being so open with her music is strong and would be taxing. Great job.

Thanks for another reaction...this is random but I read somewhere that Lana freestyled the lyrics to this song when she was in thes studio, which makes it even more interesting to me. There’s really something about the age of 19. After 12 years of schooling it’s such a surreal feeling to be thrust into the real world. At that time, you know it’s only just the beginning of life, but it somehow feels like the end. I had a particularly rough high school experience with lots of drugs and reckless behavior. 19 was the comedown for me where I quit the drugs and began seeing life through such a simple lens again. It felt contained, controllable, comfortable. And with the perspective of chaos in the rear view, it made me feel like a god.
