The driver of the crane is very much doubting, taking too much risks with many people in front of hime. I drove many heavy machines, but not one single time, I allowed anybody in front of whatever machine I drove. If necessary, I allowed only one helper and as a general rule, when he went out of sight I didn't move. When I saw that young boy going under the machine in front, I thought by myself "what an idiot!" One mistake of the crane driver or forgetting he is there, or thinking he is gone and that young boy is dead meat! As a general rule, you see, determine the pitfalls and when you know all this, you take your decision go for it and along the way you compensate. Moving so slowly, stopping, moving, stopping, moving makes you loose control over the situation. In my long career I had no single accident, no wounded people. Everybody went home in the evening in the same good shape they came in the morning. It is all about safety and caring for other people, even those you don't know or don't like. When somebody told me it was too dangerous or he was afraid, I always respected that and looked for another solution. I never put anybody at risk. What I didn't want to do, I didn't ask others to do that. There is no need for so many people around those dangerous machines. Only one trained assistant who knows were the operational dangers are, is enough. Such a driver needs clear communication between the assistant and him/herself. Any person more only add to the difficulty and risks for the job getting done. I also see people too close to the cable which is pulling. When the cable breaks, there is so many force released, it can easily cut a body in half or cut a head off. Remember at all times, draw an imaginary circle of 5 meters around the machine. Everything inside that circle is the danger zone, everything outside is the safety zone. I see a lot of macho's thinking it is cool to take such risks. However, mark my words, when it goes on like this, one day you will think on my warnings and wish you had listened. It is just a matter of time when things continue like this, that disaster will strike and only deep sorrow and regrets will follow. To operate such heavy machines, I needed a licence to be renewed every 3 years with strict examinations. Every year, I had a medical checkup, which I had to pass successfully. Above that, 3 warnings for errors or unresponsible behaviours within those 3 years and you get fired. Put your own safety and that of others above any macho behaviour. It looks cool and intelligent when an assistant respect the safety rules and knows what he/she is doing. As a heavy machine driver, such a valuable person is respected and trusted. I hope my warnings will not reach deaf ears. Any life is too valuable to reach its end before time under such dangerous machines. Follow my advice, let it sink in and one day it will save your life or that of others.
