The song is known to be from Constantinople. It's a wedding march preserved by the Mavrakis family, originally from Reizdere in Asia Minor. The song is also well-known in the Ionian Islands, particularly in Zakynthos, where it's known as a serenade.
The song´s history is lost in the depths of Asia Minor, with slight variations in melody, harmony, and lyrics. This dual journey of the song shows how lyrics and melodies traveled from one end to the other of the Hellenic world (and beyond, as we see here).
Even though the waltz rhythm refers to the West and its triple rhythm resembles the Ionian Islands, many wonderful songs from Asia Minor, also written in 3/4 time, have passed to the rest of Greece, particularly the Greek islands.
Although the song version from Asia Minor repeats the phrase 'eyv-Allah,' which, despite its religious connotation (in free translation, means 'By God'), essentially replaces the Greek 'Opa!'. In a more Westernized version, 'eyv-Allah' becomes 'ey-vala' or 'y-vala' or disappears altogether.
It is well known that this music knew no boundaries. It passed from mouth to mouth, village to village, and continent to continent. The only barrier was language. However, this barrier often broke, and the song acquired new lyrics to continue its journey to other peoples and cultures.
