Spain's one touch passing,movement off the ball and better technical skills were on a different level to England and that's why they deserve to win the world cup,they've raised the bar of women's football on the international tournament stage.Obviously I understand why you talked about Mary Earps who's had a brilliant tournament overall but you've got to give credit to 22 year old Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll who had never played a senior international match for her country until two weeks ago.She was so composed between the sticks and like Mary also drove her team forward

England was found out by the first ok team on their way. They had the easiest bracket ever with Nigeria punching above their weight but eventually just not being good enough in attack, Colombia being exposed at the back with the goalkeeper gifting easy goals and Australia with a really wonky defence and an out-of-form Sam Kerr (Australia was better w/o her despite that worldie).

It’s hard to overstate how impressive Spain’s World Cup campaign is. The most competitive World Cup ever, 32 teams, missing a full starting eleven of some of their best players, and they’re at war with their federation and head coach. How good could they become if they had full support from their federation, and by extension no player boycott? Scary stuff.

I believe that this is probably the beginning of a dominating era for Spain, since they currently hold three world cups at three different age groups. Sam & Rog, I've limited time for listening to podcast-length analysis, but you've won most of my allocation. Thank you.😊 (Shithousery had won you my follow.) Thanks also for highlighting the conflicts between the Spanish players and their Federation, noted in particular in a July 23rd article by Louisa Thomas in the New Yorker. Good on you for reporting the details of the separate celebrations and the Spanish women reversing their jerseys for the Trophy presentation (gratifying to hear). I truly hope they follow the USWNT's lead and get in their federation's male faces. On a related side note, I came across a prevailing, very ugly anti-woman footballers theme in many of the WWC KZbin discussion threads. It figured so heavily I had to wonder if AI chatbots were behind it. I'd love it if you covered it in future podcasts. Cheers.

Also so unfair that some are not recognizing and forgetting that England are current Euro champions and second in the world. The mentality has to change in regards to WC trophies. Heartily agree that second place in the world cup is not to be under valued. Basically because Sweden won the third place match, then you win the match and you're happy. England got a "silver medal" by losing the match, then you lose the match and you're not happy, it's normal. Sweden was not happy when they lost in the semi-finals. If you got a "silver medal" by winning the match, you would be happy. It's a matter of the moment.

The trouble with English-speaking countries is they don't tend to learn other languages so don't know what other countries' media are saying about their national team. The truth is other countries' media have always hyped their national teams during major tournaments women's and men's. The English just gets it in the neck because the English language is widely spoken. I have noticed during this World Cup the Americans and the American football pundits seem to struggle a lot more with England doing well in this tournament than any other country and to be honest it reeks of sour grapes. The English women and their manager never underestimated their opponents and gave credit to them after the match. The USWNT and their fans on the other hand have hopefully been humbled they saw themselves in the final before the tournament even began. The way the USWNT behaved on the pitch after the Portugal match was cringeworthy and embarrassing and refusing to shake the hands of the Portuguese players. The USWNT showed poor sportsmanship and always underestimated their opponents and couldn't bring themselves to give any credit to their opponent's performance.

This World Cup signals the end of the USWNT as contender because if you look at the technical football both Spain and England play, I don’t think the USA are capable of playing that football and that is the type of football that leads to success, I feel the USA might go many decades without winning a World Cup, unless things radically change. I think an Athletic article put it best when they said the bar has been raised on the USWNT and it is questionable whether they can meet that level. What is scary is Spain and England have significant room for improvement. Spain doesn’t even have a fully professional women’s league, with only 3 or 4 major clubs having fully professional women’s teams. And England has yet to transitioned from the best female athletes playing football. You still have the Toones and Walshs who are not natural athletes footballers. The FA have admitted they may have youth development mistakes in the change over to from semi professional to professional in women’s football where they might of unwittingly excluded English black girls from the system, by not putting any of the academies for girls in big diverse cities, so essentially ignored the talent in them, unless they had middle class parents like Toone, Russo and Williamson who could afford to travel to white rural areas where all the girl academies where based. If England opens up the female academies system to working class girls in the inner city and you will start to get the female equivalent of Saka, Bellingham, Walker, TAA, Phillips and Rashford and a giant leap in the quality of lionesses. The Lionesses 2 years ago at U15 level England only has 2% black players, the FA then put in place new talent spotting measures and black players now make up 35% of U15 team. I don’t see how a USWNT team beats an England team with top level athletes and with superior technique and skill. I feel the problems for the USA are too fundamental to meet the new standards. Pay to play, narrowing the talent pool, youth coaching based of physicality and winning, not on developing skilful players, NWSL playing a completely different style of football to that played in Europe or at world cups. It is much harder to change a culture.
@heppolo

Germany and Brazil were looking strong in 2000s (way stronger and more technical than the USWNT but USWNT survived that era somehow) and Germany looked strong over certain stretches of the cup but naive tactics and no plan B cost them a place in the knockouts. It only takes a mediocre coach and a resolute opposition in defence to derail an entire 4 year world cup cycle for some big guns. USWNT will always be the route one based team, but they really need to find another Abby Wambach if they want to be somewhat competitive, someone as physically strong as a male athlete and willing to bulldoze defenders on their way to the ball. But in general it's obvious that young USWNT players have to go abroad now to remain somewhat competitive. In other news, imagine if Japan had at least a few 6 ft tall players though...
@Delboy0
@Delboy0 Жыл бұрын
@@heppolo there is a big difference between 2000 and 2023. In 2000 the rest of world was pretty much amateur or semiprofessional so were not at the level of fitness of the USA so the USA could outrun and outwork them, neutralising their technical superiority. 2023 is a completely didn’t era where professionalism is common technical and tactical play contributes more to who wins the game. If your answer to getting the USA on top is picking more athletic players, then how come African teams didn’t dominate they have athleticism beyond anything the USA has with more technical ability. A lot of American like you are in denial about what is going on and think it is completely down to coach. The truth is he USA struggled to control the ball in midfield and lack creativity due to being not technically good enough and the old tactic of having fast wingers and crossing into the box that won them games 4, 8, 12 years ago no longer works against European teams who train every day work on tactics as a professional. The USA has fundamental weaknesses that no coach can give them.
@heppolo
@heppolo Жыл бұрын
@@Delboy0 One african team nearly unseated Wiegman and England had to only just survive via a penalty shootout while playing mediocre. Technical skills are necessary but it's the combination of technique, athleticism and good tactics that will bring out results. On the other hand, bulldozing in the women's game is underrated, it killed off tiki-taka in men's game (thanks to Jose shithousing them with Inter/Real), athleticism of the past is only a fraction of what the modern athletes can achieve. Get girls to play with boys from an early age, have them bulk up the muscle mass like men/rugby players and see them bodychecking the opposition. Tiki-taka is fun and games until you get a madman defender knocking you down and leaving you physically scared of being injured. The women game might get some of those ruthless defenders pretty soon and until women's game refereeing is as poor as in this World Cup a team can actually get away with crafty fouls and physical play (Sweden v Japan game). I am not an american, I see flaws in college-based program and pay-to-play, drafts and all of this outdated or american stuff. But we shouldn't act like this is the end of USWNT, they were never as dominant as everyone said anyway, they were just clutch/crafty/industrious in their competitions. Not a single USWNT World Cup win (or any win) was as ruthless and complete like Germany 2003 or 2007.

I couldn’t disagree more. Its very easy to be a prisoner of the moment in reaction to the early exit of the US. But, history has proven that the USWNT program has been one of the most resilient programs in the world. Even in past defeats, or surviving new rising powers, they have gone back home, retooled and came back stronger. This time will be no different. It seems like every time a new gauntlet is laid down, they manage a way to rise to the occasion. I think some people’s are hoping that the US will falter because they hate the players, or politics or style of play. But, at the end of the day none of that matters. You see folks the folks happy that the US were bounced early because they thought the US was arrogant and always in their way. You noticed those teams STILL didn’t win? With a new coach, new management and all of the talent pipelines, this program will find a way to reinvent themselves with this new young core and they will be back on top.

The scary part is that wasn’t spains best team due to the strike were as all of englands best players where part of the squad. Last euros Spain completely dominated but did not put away their chances which gave the opening for England to hit them on the break and come out with the win. Last but not least I see a lot of comments saying “ England will win the next World Cup for sure “😂 this is baffling because most of the important players for England will be in their mid 30’s then and people are assuming Spain will just suddenly fall of a cliff and not improve

Agree hardly a word about what he did. It was all about the English manager who had two straight finals.

About this point, the only team that can match up against Spain is Japan. Japan's timidity gave them away against Sweden.

🇯🇵 Japan 🇯🇵 was the best team in this tournament BY FAR & beat Spain 4/0😒 ..and I am not a Japanese 🤏 They were just unlucky against Sweden; went asleep the 1st half & wasted crucial penalty🙄

Another clown with a Japan fetish Spain would have best them any time after that. And Sweden played better than then anyway, Japan had a late rally because they were losing, it happens all the time with most teams

Well, he’s a naturalized American. And Americans prefer to listen to themselves, bc who else will praise them permanently? That’s marketing.

I'm Italian but I support England Because women's Italy It's unwatchable. The girls are not to blame. This is the defeat of a very confused Sarina It was enough to put the two strongest wingers in the world, Kemp and Kelly in their natural roles as City does and in the middle the FA top scorer, Rachel Daly. but she got stubborn with two good but no-grit players like Russo and James (look how many goals they scored in 2), also put out of role. Nobody wonders if it will be a coincidence if after the 2 European championships he lost both world championships? He reminds me a lot of Roberto Mancini. However beautiful game that the Lionesses played with a big handicap. Sarina did her cycle exactly as she had with Holland, she abandoned the beautiful 4-3-3 conditioned by the media who forced Russo and James (who would no longer play with the Spanish coach). Do you know which English player was running alongside Carmona when he scored? Go see it again. With the next manager England will win the World Cup.

England were hoping to just lose with honour in Ro16 with 5 stars missing but they got a silver with lots of young girls. The ref failed by Not sending off salma p for 2 clear yellow card fouls. That plus Bronze inexplicably going on a mad run & losing a goal conceding possession 40 yards from her right back position lost the final. England played 6 girls under age 24 & they did not have enough experience to overcome 31 Yr old current balloon dor Alexia P & the next ballon dor 27 Yr old A.Bonmati Lioness got a silver medal w 6 stars missing. (Leah W- Fran K- Beth M- Ellen W- Jill S & Lauren J benched) Having said that, Spain did play well apart from the fouls by Salma P & lots of dirty time wasting tactics. Hopefully, we get an England vs. Canada or Holland final in 2027. As its good to get a new champ instead of boring USA getting 5 golds or dirty tactics Spain a 2nd gold
