Imagine the thought of Hurin tied to that high chair for over 20 years and seeing everyone he loves brought to cursed ruin through Morgoth's twisted vision. It just shows despite all that sorrow how strong Hurin really was to endure that torture for that long. It does give satisfying hope though that in the Dagor Dagorath Turin the son of Hurin will dispense final justice for his family and the Children of Ilúvatar when he will smite Morgoth by stabbing him in his black heart, thus annihilating him forever.

Thus ended Hurin Thalion. One of the mightiest of warriors in the 1st Age of Middle Earth. Truly written like a Shakespeare tragedy for a hero who was so brave and showed courage. But in the end Morgoth's power over him was too great. He is arguably one of my favourite characters in the middle earth lore.

"There is no curse in elvish, entish, or the tongues of men for this treachery!" There is only one word that I think of wen I hear his name: pain. He suffered so much but also caused so much. He reminds me of Job from the Bible, or even the many Greek tragedies that give human suffering a face. This I think came in part from the pity and compassion that Tolkien wrote about with the Hobbits. Hurin it seems is what happens wen there is no pity or compassion to b had and that grim lesson to learn.

I am really biased to stories of Silmarillion and especially Turins story. Im from Finland and i like to think that Kalevala and Tolkiens interest in it is like some sort of spark and major inspiration for his works overall(and of course other stories like Beowulf and other mythologies and legends). I really wish there would come a good game based on these ancient times of middle earth. So much locations, forests, mountains, sea shores to explore. Something more exciting than the constant use of Mordor that we have seen in games like shadow of mordor and the recent gollum.

@@KS-xk2so character and family - Hurin didn't get a proper chance to see his children grow. so the family part would refer to father, brother, lovers etc you should know that at least, as though they're his son and daughter, their journey was separate to that of their father and his father. morgoth had his own plans for them that were separate from the saga of Hurin himself. different saga, different dynasty if either had survived.

Great video @Men of the West! For people who think Tolkien doesn't do dark stuff, I challenge them to read the tale of Hûrin and his family as what Morgoth did to them was so evil...Hûrin was a great warrior, a good man, and stared down Morgoth without fear. It is so cathartic to know that in Dagor Dagorath it will be Tûrin who ends Morgoth, avenging himself and his family for all the apin and ruin Morgoth wrought upon them.

Yes! At least for the most part. How I tend to see it is that (except for the mistakes such as Gil-galas being the son of Fingon, as admitted by Christopher Tolkien) the Silmarillion is the main canon, followed by the non-contradictory lore of the Great Tales and then the other notes of Tolkien.

Húrin’s tale is indeed one of torment and despair in the end, but I believe it all holds some very important messages within: Húrin’s prowess and courage is inspirational even as he took 70 Orcs with him before they finally brought him down, as was his endurance and defiance during captivity, but most of all his loyalty and honor seen in things like upholding his oath to preserve Gondolin’s secrecy so they may stand longer to fight and defy the darkness. It is his displays of strength that we should strive towards matching which may have even earned Morgoth’s respect. Even as they dragged the man away, they could not silence his voice when he declared daylight’s return once more. Húrin’s torment and his final moments in life as a broken man, along with his losses in his absence, shows us why we must defy evil, ‘less we wish our world to crumble around us and be destroyed, not to mention Morgoth’s method is something we could possibly mimic today with words and technology. Finally, Húrin’s tale shows us why we must often focus on one’s story in its entirety rather than part of it. He showed strength and courage, and showed defeat which came not from battle as evil does not need a blade or a hammer to destroy somebody. It all matters because it gives us all something to look at or even reflect upon. Evil must be fought with everything, because such evil has no room in them for negotiation or even redemption, and we must not let evil bring us down, because if it does, then we lose. However, it never means hope will die, because it can’t. After all, Men endured into the years to come long after Húrin rose to battle with an axe and shield and fell into the seas of his own despair to drown. He is the height and low of Men, and why Men must not let the darkness have the means to bring us down, or the day it destroys us will become that much more likely to turn into a terrible reality to suffer.

Casting aside his shield, he took up the axe of an orc captain and it is sung that the axe smoked in the black blood of the troll guard of Gothmog. We saw the cave trolls in Fellowship. We saw the battle trolls in Return of the King. And how many men it took to bring them down. And then we have Hurin, who cut down 70 of them alone with an axe until his axe was black and smoking. Then he cut off the arms of the orcs who would grab him until he was buried in orcs and only then could he be subdued. Can you imagine Hurin wearing the Dragon Helm, mithril chainmail and wielding Gurthang? He would have held the pass alone, like Horatius, and cut down all who faced him.

In the Lost Tales, Urin returns to Hisilome (Hithlum), later dies and his shade seeks Marwin (Mowen) and together lament over their children. This also occurs in the Sketch of the Mythology except Hurin is not a shade.

I do not think Hurin was broken, only brokenhearted. Hurin never bowed to Morgoth nor said anything Morgoth attempted to get out of him except rebukes, curses and reproach. Killing Mim at Nargothrond for his betrayal of his son was not the act of a broken man. Hurin's act of defiance at the throne of King Thingol for wrongs Morgoth made him see wrongly through twisted eyes as Melian pointed out to him and then restored the truth to his mind. Brokenhearted and crushed by sorrow, but never was his mind broken. Hurin never lost his honor or integrity though they now held little meaning.
