So I'm a woodworker of 30+ years, the initial picture piqued my interest. I started to watch thinking, "this is gonna be a pretty slick man-cave-barbque"... I'm waiting at the end to see how you're gonna "roast" the meat with serious heat, then.... DOOOH !!! It's a wielding table... Dude brilliant ! Makes me want to add metal work to my skill set. Awesomeness - thnx, job well done young man. Big fist bump

I see and issue. I know its a junk hub but hooking the ground to the main part of the table then welding on the turntable forces the the electrical current to travel through the bearing and arc the rollers or balls in the bearing. It might get stuck or really rough to turn over time because its going to destroy that bearing.

I built one of these from a shaper bull gear & housing. Intended to add a grounding brush, but never did get to it. Litterally hundreds of arc/hours later, up to 300 amps at times, sold it, it now has hundreds of hours more. No arc pitting what so ever.

Uhh. No. No failure. And the brush idea IS whats inside a "store bought" positioner. Usualy a heavy braid around a shaft or pushed against a face.

With a single point ground like that, you will fuse the bearings doing any welding. The table will no longer turn. Also, consider the tubing wall size. Depending on what you weld on it, the table top will not last to many years. You also, when using DC welding, are going to build a magnetic field that will pull your welds around over time.

As was mentioned by a couple of others, electric current should NEVER run through the bearings. The contact probably will be poor as well as arcing at the bearing balls/cylinders, which will damage them. It may not cause an issue for you, but as a 40 year auto mechanic instructor, we knew we had to replace bearings if a student grounded a welder at the axle end while doing any welding.

Wheel bearings are not ball bearings. Theyre tapered roller bearings which have 100x more of a contact pattern over ball bearings. They use roller bearings over balls due to the shearing forces applied to the wheel when turning the wheel as ball bearins are only deigned to handle lateral forces, a shear force would be like trying to remove a bearing by its center race which if anybodies tried knows it will fuck up a ball bearing quick as shit.. but with the amount of contact that the rollers would have, if a conductive grease were packed in and used like graphite it would greater increase the contact area and the work would be more likely to arc to the table than through the bearing.. especially with a wheel bearing, theyre usually jam packed with rollers on those bearings to maintain that clearance so shit doesnt wobble..
