Mental battles during my first art residency

As an artist I realize it doesn’t matter if anyone likes my art until I’ve reached my potential. We feel self conscious about knowing that there’s lots more room to improve.

Thanks for your honesty and transparency! Do you deal with these same feelings in your studio as well? As a self-taught arti9st, I deal with these demons all the time. lol

Hey thanks for your comment! These are TOUGH things to go through. I would say I do still deal with them, though not as poignantly as I did in that space. With the imposter syndrome issue, I feel that because I simply don’t have as much time to make art as I would like to on the regular. For example, I’ve barely made a thing since my residency in March! But I’m also reminded that everyone, artists included, go through seasons. And just because I’m not actively making right now doesn’t mean I’m not still doing important art-related work (like taking in inspiration and “refilling the reservoir” so to speak). With the time scarcity issue, I do feel that often throughout ALL the areas of my life and not just art. I’m working on: lowering expectations of how much I can/should get done, living more slowly (not filling every space with something to do), and enjoying the uniqueness of each moment instead of dwelling on how much time I have left in the day. It’s a BIG work in progress 🫠
