As a professionaly trained/practicing audio engineer, I can say in absolute surity, that cupping the mic can totally change how a sound interacts with the inside of a microphone. When you cup a mic, you are changing the polar pattern. This changes how the microphone pics up the sound. If you cup a mic, then, depending on the mic you're using, you will change it so that the sound is more directly hiting the magnets and you will get a tiny bit of reverberation that then hits the magnets again. The magnets vibrating are then converted into sound and then eletricity that is pick up in your DAW. This does make a more "hollow-directed" sound into the mic because of change of polar pattern. The more you know. Thanks for letting me rant. :) Also, awesome and insightful reaction!

Dude black metal is awesome. I cant belive so many metalheads dislike it. And if you dont like it, that doesnt make you any less of a metalhead
@RasmusYde Жыл бұрын
@@WHOREHAMMER_OFFICIAL I have a feeling that many metalheads think all black metal sounds like oldschool Mayhem and the likes. I avoided black metal for a long time because I thought it all had that really "bad" production, and I simply don't like to listen to something that sounds "bad". My gateway to black metal was Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon, which to this day still is my favorite black metal release, but there's other black metal bands I really dig too. I have a preference for symphonic stuff though. I do think I listen more to stuff that has black metal influence than straight up black metal at the end of the day. Blackened death metal and deathcore, blackgaze etc. etc. etc.

just accidently stumbled over this band today, never heard of them although they come from my hometown but what I saw so fast actually reminded me on Dimmu Borgir from the last century, specifically Spiritual Black Dimesions. Have to dive deeper into Mental Cruelty.. (and maybe find out in which local pubs they hang out 🤭)

I could go into specifics on why engineers cringe at mic-cupping, but it boils down to two things: feedback, and mix balance. Depending on how one cups the mic it can create and shift a very sharp resonant peak that is very hard to predict and will shift the vocals into an entirely different space in the mix and we’re mixing for the room as much as anything else, so venue to venue, hand position to hand position, place on the stage… all of this changes everything the moment you cup the mic. It makes the mic omnidirectional instead of directional. Most stage mics are highly directional, to prevent feedback from the speakers, mains or monitors. If you cup the mic, it starts picking up sounds from everywhere, and the moment something hits the mic at that resonant frequency you’ll get a squeal of feedback and we’ll cut that frequency out anyway. It’s counterproductive in the long run. Get second mic and let us EQ it to your liking, or some kind of effects pedal that has the curve you want without cupping the mic, and everyone is happy.

Found Mental Cruelty through spotify radio during a workout and the first song I heard was Symphony of a dying star. It stood out from the rest of the usual bland boring metal that Spotify Radio plays so I had to check out the rest of their songs and I gotta say the new album is truly amazing. Also decided to check out your band just because why not. Glad I did, Snow-Sleep was amazing.!

Because the vocal part in this style of music is more like an instrumental part than it is a singing part, a vocalist should absolutely embrace awesome sounds at the expense of enunciation. Some words are more important than others, of course; it all depends on the sound you want to bring to the song.
