1. SSNRE or safe stable nurturing relationships and environments. You may have heard me discuss this in the past but how do you do this, in plain and simple terms, for a child. Keep it simple. Create routines. Have meals together. Establish a bedtime ritual. Plan time for play and commit to being fully engaged during X minutes of that time with limited distractions. Positive parenting including modeling behavior, setting limits, and praising for good behavior counts too!
2. Make time to listen! Depending on the age of your child, sometimes they need to just have you listen, not provide answers or solutions. The less we talk or the more we ask open ended questions, the more detailed answers and sharing of thoughts and feelings can occur between you and your older child.
3. Name your child's emotions and help them learn to understand them. I get it. I don't do this alot either. When they're screaming about their hair being done in a certain way, I want to just breeze past the tantrum too, especially on school mornings. When you can, take time to acknowledge, name, and validate the emotion. Modelling that empathy, respect, and acceptance will absolutely help in them developing the same skills and doing the same the more we practice it with them!
