No its the truth lol. I am an airline pilot. What do you expect us to do? Waiting for the other person to get done eating sometimes is just not an option when youve been delayed from the beginning of the day and havent had time to eat all day and its 4pm or later. Sometimes passing through 10 is the best time to eat that burrito that you got an hour ago as your rushed to your plane because you had a plane swap on top of the 29 minute turn you are expected to maintain :D

I remember visiting the cockpit as a kid, in a DC-9 and A320. This was pre-911 obviously. Both times both pilots were drinking coffee and reading newspapers and that was really weird to me because I was ten and didn't know about autopilot. Also one time my cousin visited the cockpit when she was flying I think Lufthansa from Germany and one of the pilots let her sit in his lap and press a button or flip a switch or something. Which button/switch it was even she doesn't remember because she was like 5-6 at the time, probably something like the seatbelt light since it was apparently shortly before landing. I kinda miss when flying was chill like that, though I'm guessing letting a random kid flip switches was against company policy even in the 90s.

Yeah, I visited an A330 cockpit a couple times and I was always amazed at how the captain would make any inconvenience funny. I was even more surprised when I saw the pilot duo exchanging cookies and recommending each other different brands of cookies! That was so much fun being up there and is the reason I’m going for piloting. I just felt at home and so comfortable in there, could never see myself doing anything else.

As a non pilot I never knew that planes didn’t fly straight from point A to point B. I knew that you couldn’t fly through restricted airspace like something to do with the military but having regular airways was something I had never even considered. There is a reason why I have been watching this channel nonstop since I found it about a week ago.

Great video! My adventure in aviation started when I got lucky and got to sit at the spare seat in the back of the cockpit, for the whole duration of the flight, when I was 11 years old. OSL-ARN. SAS DC-9-41. Probably around 1998. It was amazing! Breaking through the clouds with a cockpit view, and listening to those cool radio conversations. The pilots had a great vibe and made me feel so utterly safe, so safe I can’t even begin to describe it. The flight attendant asked me what I wanted to eat, and I asked for the meal that was the least popular that day. She smiled. I then asked the pilots when I could start my flying lessons. They told me I had to be 15 (Norwegian aviation rules), and here I am, 32 years old, with a ppl-a license. Now, I just need to get that instrument rating...

I was a Flight Dispatcher for an airline and sometimes the pilots would notice a higher fuel burn than was planned. At that time they would ACARS me about the situation so I could help come up with a solution. I might recommend a short-cut they could ask ATC for or I might check the wind velocity at different altitudes. Sometimes I would find that the problem was that they were right in the middle of the jetstream but winds would be dying down soon and the high fuel burn would become less of a factor. If it was really bad we would discuss it together and come come up with a plan for diverting the aircraft if we needed to land to get more fuel and decided at what point that decision to divert or not would be made. At this point I would call that airport operations center and inform them of the situation, just in case we might need them. My point is this: It wasn't just the pilots trying to figure out the problem and come up with a solution. The Flight Dispatcher was part of that process too.

I was lucky (through a personal relationship with a Qantas pilot) to fly in the cockpit of a 747 from Sydney to Hong Kong in August 2001 (timing was lucky). It was great fun. Captain showed me his flight simulator on his new Palm Pilot (long time ago). The approach and landing in great weather in Hong Kong was sensational. Very pretty and the elevated position during touch down etc. Will never forget this experience.

Double food poisoning cases are bad news... I was traveling by car and camping with a friend after we both ate bad feta black bean dip. We were both incapacitated, but were off phase from each other by a number of hours. It was a very long, surreal trip... I remember vomiting, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery! My friend pulled off to rest, blocking a runaway truck ramp! It was definitely a case of desperation and impaired judgement. It seemed like we were never going to get home.

I'm glad pilots can take naps. I had a delayed takeoff once (as a passenger) because the crew was late (I think a flight attendant called in sick and they had to bring someone in). The pilot assured us it wasn't because the crew needed their "beauty sleep" and I was thinking, you know, I'd really rather you did get your beauty sleep before you take my life into your hands. I would not be mad about that.

I call that a video game, which has an automatic pause when you look away. [More] seriously, the way it works, you don't just read a clue and resume looking at the horizon while you think about it. In truth, regular crossword puzzle workers are processing many combinations/permutations. Is 30 seconds facing the sheet uncommon? I'd bet that it's not...because I sometimes spend longer than that on a solution. Sudoku is even worse - a lot worse, as you keep scanning, processing/rejecting solutions, considering alternatives... You really should be certain you have the discipline not to stare at it, or obsess. Some do. Not all.

The most credible theory for the flight that went on for too long was that the pilots had done something bad, like falling asleep, then decided to fly out of the way so that the voice recorder would run out of space and cover up whatever they did.
@gavinjenkins899
@gavinjenkins899 2 жыл бұрын
Why would you come up with a fake story that is ALSO really bad though...? If this was what happened, I would assume they'd at least have a cover story that sounds like not their fault, like one of the pilots being ill and wanting to see if he got better in time for redundancy for landing, or some fault with the plane that they could pretend they were fixing during that time that couldn't be verified later. Not that I endorse that, obviously, just if you're gonna lie anyway, you'd lie in your favor...

Question about planning vs reality: what is the point (in time) when the pilots have actually to 'investigate' the deviation from the plan? How many minutes must the plan deviate from the plan to actually investigate a re route or other measures? I can imagine when 'reality' predicts you're 5 minutes late at your destination, no alternative actions are needed (or are?), 20 minutes late may cause schedule hassles, 1 hour late may cause serious ( fuel) issues, etc. What is the line between not worrying and taking actions?

I believe there was a plane crash in South America several decades ago, caused because the pilots used the receiver of a radio direction finder to listen to a radio broadcast of a football(soccer) game.

I mean, listening to music, reading books, watching movies, these are all things you also wouldn't do if you're a professional driver or a train conductor. People forget that since you have a driving license, you're allowed to listen to the radio. Mental workload for driving is nothing compared to flying. Driving license != flying license. The only radio you're supposed to listen to is air traffic radio 🤣 High-fives to all pilots, engineers and cabin crew for their work! You are true professionals.

I worked on UK Weatherships. I remember one Speedbird (BA) who, as usual, wanted the full service (Speed, Track, Bearing). After we gave him his range and bearing, he STATED WE WERE WRONG, and requested we calculate Range and Bearing again. At this point we radio techs knew something was wrong so we pulled out our camera and recorded the radar display that showed the aircraft move diagonally 500 miles to it's proper course. We reported the incident and the BA pilot was whipped with a wet noodle. BA pilots always treated us like hired help, American carriers were the best - they delivered messages to wives and loved ones. One weathership crew member had a wife in hospital and the American crew VISITED HER with a large bunch of flowers!

Man, all of this stuff that you can't do in the cockpit and the intense focus it takes shows you why I am NOT a pilot. O_O And very true about sleep inertia. There was a time when I was having sleep/mental health issues, where I got in the car to go to work and wasn't really aware of what I was doing until I was getting on the on ramp to the interstate. NOT a good situation at all.

I'm a not a pilotsl, but I do enjoy watching your coverage of airplane incidents. I have 4 questions for you. 1. Obviously overnight, the plane is powered down. Cam you show us the general power up/down procedures of commercial aircraft? 2. What's the length of short/medium/long haul fights? 3. If fighter jets are deployed and it was a mistake if the pilots, does the airline get charged or how does that work? 4. I use a walker. How Is that handled inflight?

There is so much psychology that goes into preventing accidents and communication in the cockpit. At one point he pointed out how before they changed their heading per ATC"s short cut they had a procedure to make sure biases don't build up. Just like toxic gas human biases and other unconscious tendencies can reach dangerous levels if not monitored just as closely as the physical environment.

SLEEP! I absolutely agree with the policy as you described 😊 As a truck driver it is essential to stop and sleep or at least walk around when you get tired. It's required by law in NZ every 5.5 work hours. When I was a power and substation operator we would sleep for quiet periods on night shift. It was essential to be fresh for when the work load came on. The objection I've heard is 'how can you sleep while you are being payed to work?' (like the boy who is under the haystack sleeping while he is supposed to be mucking out the horses.) But in these cases, the primary task is to operate SAFELY. It is much better to be fresh to handle difficult issues that might come up. The problem comes when you start relying on your work time sleep and come to work under refreshed. And when it becomes a habit. Sometimes you don't have the opportunity when work load is high but you still have to be fresh enough to operate safely. Setting an alarm used to be useful not to overshoot waking time. And I love that someone is talking openly about this!

MentourPilot, love your channel. I am a big flight sim (X-Plane 11) enthusiast and love to fly the B738's. I have visited some places where they actually use X-Plane 11 for training purposes. I always start from Cold and Dark and follow checklist procedures. So, much fun. Anyways, onto my question. Do any airlines have like a ride along program? Meaning, someone who is interested in becoming a pilot, do they have any kind of programs where someone could sign up to ride along in the jumpseat with the pilots to see if it's really for them? Some, like me, may be interested by doing it from a sim experience, but real life experience, in my opinion, would tell more. I know there would be a lot of security issues here, but I suppose that is what thorough background checks and NDA's are for right? Any idea on this?

@Mentour Pilot I have to say 2 things that you may be interested in: 1. The third thing that you should not discuss in the cockpit is a sport(!). Fans of opposing teams can be extremely passionate for their favourite team up to the level of violence (just saying). 2. If you have a problem with coffee drinking then I can share my own experience with some explanation. Here it goes: Coffee itself considered as a diuretic. This means you will want to pee more often. After some time you might feel that you need to drink more coffee because the previous cup doesn't work as you were expecting. However, when you urinate, you lose fluid in your body. Hence the pressure in the bloodstream reduces. The coffee still in your body but it can not do its job effectively because of the lack of pressure in your bloodstream. Chances are you have to replenish lost liquids in your system. Drink pure water with the smallest possible sips. 1-2 glasses of the water (or more depending on your body) for each cup of coffee. You will be surprised to find that most of the time it works like drinking an extra cup of coffee without actually drinking coffee. By doing so you simply return your blood pressure to the normal. Also, the lack of drinking water when drinking coffee is quite unhealthy to your cardiovascular system. Simply put you forcing the heart to pump faster when in the system with insufficient blood pressure. To put it simply - it is like engage full thrust in the turboprop aeroplane while all propellers are missing, and then, in addition, to expect that the aeroplane will fly. Conclusion: If you are coffee drinker then you absolutely must to be a water drinker.

There was also that Colgan Air (Continental Express) crash in Buffalo, NY, in February 2009. Everyone on that flight perished in that incident. One thing they believe was a factor was pilot fatigue. However, I believe they also found that both of the pilots had been having conversations with each other, about topics unrelated to the flight.
