4:20 Power output over 100% is called WEP "War Emergency Power". It's a state that allows for greater output at the cost of damaging the equipment. It's typically used in conjunction with something called "battleshort" where the safety features are bypassed to guarantee the equipment will continue to function during an emergency situation. Battleshort comes from "shorting" the equipment by replacing fuses with copper bus bars of sufficient thickness to handle the current

I would purge the fuel system, get a new filter, etc. You never know. There might be quite a bit of water in the tank after sitting for such a long time. If you run it low on fuel, you risk sucking in all that crap through the IP and ruin it + the injectors. Costly to repair.
@d.hansel8547 жыл бұрын
Your right about flushing the fuel, putting a new filter. Also do that with the oil. I did notice the oil light was on. Also needs a new oil filter and drain the radiator and refill it with right amount of anti-freeze. I would check the fan belts and all the hoses. Just go through it and replace as much as you can. These big generators, especially the military have their own wiring outputs. They are not forgiving.

Yesss Battle Short! I've worked on many military gens like this, always got a kick out of battle short. Look at those schematics on the enclosure doors and you'll see the battle short switch literally bypasses every safety system on the unit. You could put a bullet through the sump and lose all the oil and she'll still run until the rings seize, love it. The voltage restrap board cannot switch a three phase unit to a single phase unit. You'll have the option to be 480 in one position and 208 in the other, all three phase. The external 120V residential outlets are powered by seperate windings in the stator. Theyll always have power even when the main breaker is opened. State municipalities in our area like these units because they are cheap cheap cheap. 142 hours is WAY high, especially if she sat for three years. In my experience (limited but still) these never have over 50-75 hours. Think about it... these arent little portable generacs for your table saw on a job site. These are for large Kw three phase applications that are prioritized by utility companies. These maybe power critical infrastructure for a couple hours three or four times a year. No glow plugs but look at the little bung on the intake manifold, thats an ether assist, AKA "winter kit" which you do have. Lead acid or NiCad for gensets, never AGM. Whenever we see optimas in an overachievers genset we recommend they get out of there. Absorbed glass mat batteries are mostly designed for impact absorption, not being on a trickle charger forever and ever and discharging once or twice a year. Hopefully your friend paid pennies for it, they're cheap but rare and def cool to play with. I'd buy one just to mess with the Battle Short...

Nice score. Diesel generators are great; I have a very small one myself. Those hours are high for military use but for everyone else ... with regular oil changes and clean fuel, you'll get 100,000 hours out of it before it needs a major overhaul. Keep in mind though: DON'T RUN IT WITH NO LOAD OR AN UNDERSIZED LOAD except for very brief tests. If run without sufficient load, diesel engines will develop a "wet stack" condition and will require some time-consuming maintenance to fix.

The voltage reconnection board (TB6) that you show at 6:18 doesn't switch it between 120 and 208, it switches it from 120/208 to 220/416. (It's always a three phase generator unless you modify it) The frequency adjust switch doesn't do anything on that model. (006a) you have to adjust the frequency with the throttle knob.

Frequency knob is directly linked to the governer rpm set point. Usually the rpm has to be on 1800 for 60 hz output. 1800 / 60 = 30 inversion steps per rotation inside of the generator... kind of... Gasoline engines that torques at higher rpm use different generators with different windings. These numbers might be slightly different for your genset. But for sure, frequency knob shall change the rpm of the engine.

Hey Russ, Operating Instructions: Section 1-PRESTART CHECKS Step "G" - CLOSE ALL DOORS EXCEPT THOSE ON CONTROL PANEL END OF SET. Airflow control for proper cooling :-) Also, a 90° turn upwards on the exhaust would help with the noise. Make sure it has a flap though, like it currently does, so you don't accumulate water (or birds) in the exhaust. Since it's turbocharged, that helps muffle the exhaust too. In my hot-rod days, my mod'd turbo'ed Buick V6 was un-muffled and wasn't very noisy.

He'll find that some of the stuff he said during the making of this video is not correct, after he reads the manual. It's not a motor, it's an engine. A motor runs on AC or DC voltage and current. Engines run on gasoline, diesel, and even kerosene. This unit appears to be in good condition. I would expect to pay $5,000 to $7,000. Parts are still available. Good luck with it. Its a great find!

Put an elbow and a pipe going up on the exhaust. The doors on the side most be closed when running so the air comes in the back to cool the generator part and that will also cut down the sound. With the exhaust going up that sound will mostly go up. I wish I had that. I really want the older one with the multi fuel engine.

Trailer axles are designed for one purpose, from manufacture to dealer, then to the point of setup. They are sent back to a refurbish company. Then taken completely apart and checked out, then reassembled. The brake pads are not designed like autos or trucks are.

Battle mode or what they also call combat mode is an override. When activated that generator will run until it explodes regardless of any faults or issues. It's a run till it blows mode.

Larger version of the 110/208 volt 3 phase, four wire generator I used. Still wondering what equipment the Air Force had that needed 3 phase 240/416 volts though?

How long does that thing run on a tank? Try getting mosquito repelling plants and I heard that there are sounds that repell them too. The music of skrillex is supposed to make them not bite. And you can buy nematodes that kill their spawn or eggs. You put them in ponds and water tons.

It's been a few years since you made this video. I hope that before you ran that old (tractor) engine again that you drained all the old fuel, changed the fuel filters, drained the oil, and changed the oil filters, and refilled with fresh fuel and oil. Diesel's are peculiar about having good and clean fuel.

Noise abatement of generator exhaust can be done by running the exhaust into a little sand bag doghouse or packed earth doghouse.

said my another commenter you probably need a lode for the the voltage and frequency gauges to work correctly. more so the frequency meeter. this is way more complicated than i thought they were. but hell it started right away after 3 years with old gas as-well. very very cool!

If I'm not mistaken I used one of those before in Guam. First name I recall-- it was refered to as a sled.
@paulchapman43995 жыл бұрын
The two slots in the sled are for forklift maneuvering. The "C" bolts near the top are for a Crain lift or maneuvering. Try eBay for the power plugs in Government surplus. The screw thread in the exhaust may allow you to put a vertical stack, the noise then goes up in the air, not across the yard Just like a truckers tractor unit. You'll need to log the hours the engine runs. This gives you the service intervals like the automobile has mile odometer for oil changes etc. Frequency is engine speed you will find the faster the engine the higher the frequency. The synchro lights are important when connecting two or more generators together (get the power company power station to show you to see how they bring online another alternator set). You'll get the idea.

even if it works, military generators are difficult to use. In Alabama you will have to pay Southern Company a demand fee! yes i said PAY. the PSC passed a tax - fee for standby power use such as solar panel. Am sure it applies to large generators too.
@csjaugiedog6 жыл бұрын
The item you have is a 400Hz generator. It was designed to be a ground power unit for aircraft systems that use 400Hz. That doesn't seem to mean anything to you! ....Believe me, IT SHOULD! Just because your AC voltages measure to your liking, doesn't mean your 60Hz appliances (in your dads home) will agree. In fact; you will almost certainly damage ALL of them. You are probably looking at replacing the alternator half of the unit with one that is designed to produce 50/60Hz.

We have this model the motor runs but does not generate electricity. Not sure if it's the regulator or what? We can not find anyone who works on them here in western Colorado. Any advice?

Looks like the old reliable stuff it was built to last, but the run ours is very short which means it’s not even broken in yet i’d imagine it last forever you take care of it.

This unit would be very useful for a family gathering up at the cabin or a hugging party up at a cabin. There would have to be a plug-in to plug-in receptacles with cord on the cabin to interface with the generator in both 220 V mode and also 120 V mode.
@wifighostcruiser96656 жыл бұрын
What the hell is a hugging party?
@davinbartell36776 жыл бұрын
If the generator is putting out the full 6D kilowatts or 60,000 W of power in an hour at the rate of 120 V ,than your amperage that you could use is 500 amp circuit which should be way more than enough for a Normall home which usually has a 200 amp circuit at the maximum
@Sir_Wrecks_A_Lot11 жыл бұрын
You didn't say what exactly what it was, but you made a reference to the frequency of the generator. You need to be careful about that. They made two versions of those generators. One runs at 60 Hz, the other runs at 400 Hz. By your comment "that can't be right" I bet you got a 400 HZ model didn't you?
@jimviau3278 жыл бұрын

Sweet! Try to find out the fuel consumption in gallons per hour. You can definitely run that diesel on a vegetable oil blend of 80% veggie and 20% gasoline. This will not harm it at all and you won't need to modify anything. Message me for more details. God is blessing you, Russ.

You should have some kind of electric source hooked up to it so you dont burn out the gen stater From no power going out from the gen. Like a fan or electrical applance.

Nice to have. I bought an MQ Power Whisper Watt 70kva gen set on tandem axle trailer with aux belly tank for $800. Never have had to use it but I'd rather have it and nor need it than need it and not have it.
