Unfortunately for Raj Kapoor (1924-1988) Mera Naam Joker (1970) flopped when it was released in December of 1970. The first chapter was written in part by actor, director & producer Manoj Kumar. RIshi Kapoor (1952-2020) who played the young joker had an infatuation with his schoolteacher Mary (portrayed by SImi Garewal). It is David who explains to Mary that Raju is neither a child nor an adult- he is just sixteen. As the story progresses to the second chapter, we see Raju employed with Gemini Circus run by Mahinder (Dharmendra) & Sher Singh (Dara Singh) was more like his right hand man- along with being the lion tamer. Raju gets caught in a lie- as he said no one would employ him, so he had to lie to feed himself & his ailing mother (portrayed by Achala Sachdeva). Unknown to Raju's mother, he becomes a joker (clown) with Gemini Circus- something she disapproves of not without reason- Raju's father died while performing an act on the trapeze. Here we see the Russian artists from the Soviet Union who have to come India as guests of the Gemini Circus. Raju develops a relationship with Marina- the star attraction of the Russian artists. Raju's mother would like to see her son get married & settled down. It is then she figures out (to her horror) where he works. While performing the same trapeze act that his father did, Raju falls into the net. When his mother see his performance, little did he know his actions would kill her. By the third chapter, Raju has retired from show business. He meets with Meena (Minoo Master)- Padmini, who originally dreamt of being on the stage, instead she makes a living putting up posters/billboards. Raju helps her realize her dream- first as a Circus act, then a qawwali (song/dance) troupe & finally she meets with Mr. Rajendra Kumar (Rajendra Kumar) who helps her by becoming a fashion model traveling throughout India. The film has some beautiful (and haunting) melodies. Music supplied by Shankar-Jaikishan. Songs like "Jaane Kahan Gaye Woh DIn"- I wonder where those days have gone, in which you said, on the path of love, you are mine. The theme for "Mera Naam Joker" (1970) obviously was "Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan Iske Siva Jaana Kahan"- Here I shall live. Here I shall die, where else could I go? Manna Dey won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for "Aye Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo". Asha Bhosle was a replacement for Lata Mangeshkar- she had a falling out with Raj Kapoor, but later did playback in his next film Bobby (1973). As Raj Kapoor's "magnum opus", he said in an interview, "Mera Naam Joker didn't go down well with the people". This was more or less his autobiography. It took six years to complete Mera Naam Joker (1970) & when it flopped it put Raj Kapoor in a financial strain. 50+ years later & Mera Naam Joker (1970) gets the recognition it deserved in the beginning. Raj Kapoor claimed that Mera Naam Joker (1970) was his favorite piece of work.

Brilliant movie by RK, he went outside the square, unfortunately it went above audience's head because they couldn't understand the psychology of the lead, release it now, our audience appreciates good work they are educated and young.

In an interview Ranadheer Kapoor says, people thought this would be a comedy type movie, but actually it was a philosophical that people could not get. I think people were not very mature or society was not getting through those situations to catch the insight of legend RK

@@kirangaillard1238 Another thing is that in those days 54 years back, people were very much attached to their family of around 6-8 people, relationship and neighbours. So as shown in the film it's about a person who lives in the city ( hill station) of a much higher level and the family doesn't have any other members more than 2. People of the society were more of the lower middle class or poor In India. So it's obvious that people couldn't relate themselves with the situation of a person like a joker. People in those days would have never accepted that a sane person accepts becoming a joker as a profession. Even right now nobody thinks such a profession or the show business sustains.
