The rain has come to give some rest to the firefighters.❤ They are real heroes risking their lives, as volunteers and not professionals, for the safety of the rest of the people. Fires are getting worse from year to year. Climate change is not helping. Things can be replaced but lives cannot. I'm glad everything's fine with you. Stay safe and vigilant.

Thank you, Meraid, for working on this post despite the threat of fires. It must be nerve-wracking, especially with Dan away. These workers are simply amazing! Slow and steady, always sociable with each other. It's a good feeling to have your house built by good people. You know the house will be solid for many, many years to come. I had no idea they make glass roof tiles. So interesting - all of it. Take care of yourself and I pray everyone stays safe. (Here in Canada, they suggest wearing N95 masks due to the fires and particulates they release.) I'm glad that the trees have you and Dan to fend for them. You know what you're doing. These workers are all in theyrs 50/60 years of age...they are " mestres" masters of the trade due to the long years of experience ... they don't run ..they now what they are doing...they work calmly and steady...to get a job well done in the end.....

Oh stay safe I know that feeling when you get no sleep at night in case the wind changes and come back your way , ive been through two of them on a farm trying to get in all the cattle and animals to safety. The smell you get for days and the dust . In town now but still have had them around town , thank goodness we have got the rain these last couple of days . Love the banter of your builders❤. Their work is an art form that unfortunately doesn’t attract the young, hence shortage of skilled artisans for restoring houses in which we’d like to retain original features. The fires are a huge worry, especially the man-made type😢. Great update.

I have been so concerned for you since I heard about the fires. I live in Australia so fires are a seasonal ever present concern. The ash is so dangerous. It's always nice to know when thought I have passed along is found to be useful 😊 Yes, the roof you are being challenged to describe is a hip roof. The joining end of the jack rafter that meets the hip rafter is a "complex cut". As you said, angled in two planes. I admire your inquisitive mind. You have learned a lot on this project! 👍

At the same time, your explanations - together with the images and the Portuguese words from the builders -are a specialization in English building language for me. Here in Australia when we have bush fires huge pieces of gum bark and leaves and sticks which are on fire fall down everywhere starting new fires, it goes so black we can't see anything even a foot in front of our face, stay safe xoxo P.S I Love your new roof, it looks great and I was concerned with the earth quake

Checking in from Aus. Your fires have been on our news. We are just into spring,so time to start cleaning out the gutters,cleaning up all the crap everywhere and being mindful. In Victoria we don’t have a ban on equipment for months,ours goes by weather with days declared at 2400 for 24 hours. A lot of people semi rural have sprinkler systems on their roves which can cover a huge area around the house. All the best
