Hi Chris, big project I hope it goes well for you, it's a shame the bodywork doesn't last as well as the mechanicals on these, they're bombproof. You mentioned there was burning from the alternator when running it and it has 508d running gear, I don't know how familiar you are with these (and I'm no expert) but I think they vary between 12&24 volt depending on the model and age, I have a 1982 508d (chassis cab which was originally a Luton box van but now a car transporter) and the whole electrical system is 12v including the alternator except for the starter motor which runs 24v. It does this using 2 batteries and a large combined split charge relay and solenoid which are all under the drivers seat. I hope this helps. Also I know it's a good way off yet but when you come to drive it you will find that the steering needs a lot of turns lock to lock and is pretty heavy, I strongly recommend putting a knob on the steering wheel so you can turn it faster (like they use on fork lift trucks and also for disabled people to drive with one arm). When I first drove mine I had to pretty much stop when I needed to turn into a side road and wrestle the steering wheel round loads to get enough lock to make the corner but now I'm used to it using the knob you can keep speed up more which makes the steering lighter to turn so it can be driven around corners much faster, it handles surprisingly well and engine is very torquey from low revs but has no power at higher revs so it doesn't like the slightest hills when cruising at higher speed. Will pull strong up steep hills in the lower gears though so you won't get stuck in Scotland. 👍
