Mercedes 450SEL MY80 Clay & I are preloading, installing Chain Tensioner then we set chain timing

Clay and myself got together today to start putting things back together. We installed the last guide rail, then we preloaded the chain tensioner with 20W50 and installed same using three M8 x 1.25 L: 50mm Bolts ( 80mm Bolts work better on w116). We then show you on how to set timing between crankshaft and camshafts and on how to install the distributor correctly to match the timing of the chain. Finally we close everything off and we do a oil pump pressure test to see if Clays engine survived the leaking injectors and the one shorted spark plug which broke down his engine oil.

Peter, this video is perfect. It shows me that yes, my tensioner is NOT pre loaded. What a sigh of relief. My 82 380sl has the newer tensioner and I have only 2 bolts. I will go and get M8. X 1.25 longer bolts and nuts and then pre load my tensioner and then I will film an update on my channel. The next time I start it, it should be nice and quiet!!!

is the tensioner removed from the engine when rotating and adjusting the cam sprocket. you mentioned about the guides , one side is longer than the other, i recently did my guides, I didnt realise they fitted a certain way, do I need to trip everything down again to reverse them, on the m116 420sec all guides are the same length overall do they have a long and short side

When adjusting the cam sprocket, yes the tensioner has to be removed for that. When rotating engine to check alignment then the tensioner has to be installed and prefilled with oil to create the required chain tension, otherwise your readings will be way off. As to the guides, the vary with engine number. Most off them have a long and a short side and they need to be installed correctly. You need to check your specific engine manual for correct position and direction.

@@inovahightechltd Thanks, you mentioned the guides rails have long and short side, when I did my 500 sec i dont remember which way iI put the guides in, ie whether the longer side went in first, its possible the shorter part of the guide went in first, will this cause me problems in the future,
