You definitely won't mistake this for an active torque splitting diff like that found on the now-departed Lancer Evolution or Audi S4 (with sport diff). However this system is more intricate than the Focus RS 'revoknuckle' and GM's HiPer strut to try to rid the torque-steer in high-powered FWD-based vehicles. As a side benefit the standard AWD does help immensely for those who live in the snow-belt (you try driving a RWD M3 or C63 in 5in of snow).

There was a time manufacturers used to design it's own components, due to cost constrains not sure if this 4matic system isn't actually outsourced and only somewhat tuned by Mercedes-AMG.

If you're a more experienced driver, you turn ESP off so it won't intervene. ESP actually, in most cars (except for for "sport mode", or equivalent, on RWD only cars) should be turned off if you're more experienced, since then the car will be more predictable and - in the right hands - actually safer. I know and seen AWD drive cars get into some accidents because of understeer caused by ESP intervention trying to brake the front wheels (even rear wheels, depending on how said AWD and ESP system works) on slippery conditions and making the car slide foreword.

This is very impressive and I'm glad that as a species humans have developed such excellent engineering marvels. But it's much more effective to put an electric motor on each wheel and control them all with software. Batteries are the main problem at the moment, but we'll get there soon.

Every info I have seen says the 4matic delivers up to 50% of engine power to the rear wheels when activated but this video says 100% of power can be delivered to rear wheels? Hmmmmm? Anyone know which is correct?
@cuneytmeran72379 жыл бұрын
3Vimages it should be 50 % . Centre differential will lock front and rear wheels if full lock achieved it will be only maximum 50 % unless front wheels are under braking. 100 % of the power to transmit to rear on FWD based 4x4 is not possible.

the drive shaft always connected to the rear to take up to 50% of the torque to rear, but the drive shaft is disconnected to the rear wheel with clutch plates. when press those plates together, it can connect the rear axial to the drive shaft to make rear wheel turn. In this case it is a basic connect and disconnect like a light switch. For the power that send to the rear, that will depending on how the gearbox do. because it has to connect to the front all the time, the transfer power to the rear seems to be leeching to the front through simple gears. That is why it cannot detach the front to make it rwd. The other way to do it is to put the same system to the front axial as the rear and become a transfer case so that the car can send more power to rear. However, this way will require a much better and stronger gear in the back (cost and space for smallcar usually cannot allow that) and therefore like the focus RS would only allow 60% to the rear since the rear gears are cheaper and flimsier. For rwd bias awd, u can check the A4.
@faverodefavero8 жыл бұрын
This is one of those cars that are actually safer and better handling, predictable with ESP off -- most of the time, at least. If ESP is on, and I've been driving a grey A45 for almost a year now, the car is just to heavy in the front, and almost always understeer to da dangerous level, really (also making you look like a ridiculously bad driver). Even then: at high speeds, the A45 is still prone to understeer a fair bit.

Drive an Evo X in snow and after that tell me what you think of this pseudo all wheel drive.
@Trades4610 жыл бұрын
You left out the small details; The A45 & CLA45 weigh a scant 1550kg & will both easily crack 25mpg combined. A Evo X weighs a hefty 1630kg despite being much less luxurious and a Evo X will struggle even 18mpg combined. Sure these Mercedes MFA (FWD-based) platform cars will not hold a candle on a rally course or Auto-X, but are massively better commuters, blend right into a corporate parking lot & great occasional sporty drivers. To each their own I'd say.
@onixxx198410 жыл бұрын
Trades46 I own an evo x MR, it is pig rich from factory, with boltons and tuning it gets better, I want to make a good track street hybrid car, not 100% dedicated track, but a trackable street car. And I saw an Aussie comparison where the evo x used less fuel in a test compared to a Golf R that has direct injection, it was a surprize to me.
@onixxx198410 жыл бұрын
Trades46 The problem is that these "official" mpg ratings are produced under minimal load, it has nothing to do with reality, so when you hammer it no 300 hp car will produce anything close to 10 mpg, and they are advertized at 30+ mpg, that is at low load only, and we all know people don`t buy strong cars to go economically and slow, for that we have small engines and eco cars.
@Trades4610 жыл бұрын
Nagy Szilard Sensible drivers will only hammer their cars on track-day or Auto-X. Sure you can occasionally punch it on freeway when Cops aren't looking, but it's rare enough that I can safely say most "performance machines" are only driven at the limit 10% of the time. (If not so, I question your driving style & the validity of your license). Let me put it this way; a STI & Evo would are better cars 10% of the time you're hammering them at the less-than-legal limit, but the Mercedes-AMG are better (more comfortable, luxurious etc.) when you drive them on the regular roads, 90% of the time. And when you're NOT trying to get yourself a speeding ticket, then a 25MPG combined vs. a 18MPG combined would mean paying a visit to your local gas station each week vs. every 2 days. I don't need a calculator to know how much petrol you'd save annually yet still have equal level of occasional fun.
@onixxx198410 жыл бұрын
Trades46 I have an economy car as a daily driver, when I use the evo for the go fast stuff, if the mercedes had the evo x awd system and a good transmission, I would buy that as a track toy, but since they don`t make cars hardcore anymore I will stick with the few that are left.

this AWD seems like an afterthought; an adaptation of a FWD... video is also misleading because only 50% of the power can be sent to the rear wheels in the A45/CLA45 AMG. I think they fudged around at 1:00 with the idea of "100% of that 50% can be sent to the rear differential by the rear electronic clutch"... not sure what they are trying to say but for sure this system can't function at a 100% rear torque split. Fancy presentation with big words... but at the end of the day just a traverse 4-pot set up with unequal front axles. Nowhere near a "perfected" AWD system. The 4-matic system is nowhere near the world-class AWDs from Audi and Subaru. It really irks me when everything sounds more believable with a video and a movie voice.
@JD05099 жыл бұрын
Its not misleading my friend. Its depend on the type and segment of car. For the A45 in the normal controlling conditions(cornering, acceleration or deceleration) it split up to 50/50. Check at 2:08 it send the 100% torque to the rear axle by applying brake at front axle during the lost of traction at front axle, that way they send 100% torque to rear wheel axle. Mercedes made this version for daily use sports car with good fuel economy, by keep it as a FWD in normal situation. It seems very reliable AWD system, because they use proportional valve instead of servo motor to control the plates

he is right, this is basicly a mercedes version of haldex 4wd system and no it is not only a vw system, it is a pathen, volvo, ford, saab and vw all use the same haldex. This is because the cla is fwd based, any other 4matic benz have a different 4wd, more genuine and that is because the engine is not transversely mounted like in the cla, so in sum, almost every fwd based car has a very simular 4wd system to this.
