Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG | Something Out of This World

Respected as it is, the AMG brand has come to be regarded as a premium Mercedes-Benz trim. It was not that long ago, however, that an AMG was something more -- a hand-assembled blend of luxury and sport that catered to an owner's every whim. Nothing showcases that more than auto designer Kahren Arakelyan, the owner of this daily-driven 1988 560 SEC AMG. First impressions mean everything -- and it was the impression from seeing a Mercedes in Soviet Armenia that made Kahren a dedicated Benz enthusiast.

I've watched it about 4 times in the past hour. It inspired me to find this 1991 Mercedes 560 SEC in my area for $6000. I'm thinking about it and getting the kit and starting to for my new project car and then blacking it out to look just like the one in the video. It's such a sexy car.

It's faster too. AMG claimed 270kph and while this seems a bit grand, with 380 something bhp it can certainly do 260... Which is more than the modern AMG.

Terrific car. Once I saw Patrick Swayze drive one in Roadhouse, I was hooked. The classic lines of the SEC are timeless. Its sexy and aggressive without being overstated and the AMG of yours just enhances it. Would love to have one. The Benzos of the 80s were the pinnacle of MB in my opinion. Still largely hand-built cars that were built like Sherman tanks. Cars like the SEC and even the 190 are still timeless in their looks.

You're not alone. The 1980s Benzes struck a good balance between cutting-edge tech and reliability. Since the 2000s, we've seen MBs as being over-engineered--unnecessarily complicated. Hell, even the nomenclature is complicated.

This is way ahead of its time and it will be for a long time , V8 DOHC similar to the 427 SOHC from the shelby Cobras AC the Ford GT40 that won GP of Le Mans in 1966 in 1,2 and 3 places they also had this sort of OHC .., all the best awesome car .

Thank you all for the compliments, I enjoy reading them all :) For those that keep saying that this is not a real AMG, that I converted it with fake badges n shit 8 yrs ago, do you have a hard time understanding my "plain" English or do you lack knowledge of Mercedes & AMG history? First of all, all Pre-Merger AMG cars (pre 1992 before AMG was taken over by MB) ARE conversions. They would leave theMB factory as plain cars, then those who had money and desire would have AMG, or their certified shops around the globe, do the midifications, additions, conversions etc. So now you understand what AMG conversion means. And for those that keep saying this or that is fake or done by me. This car was CONVERTED into an AMG back in 1989 by Beverly Hills Motoring (the only certified AMG dealer in LA back then). All the chrome black out, badging, wheels, bodykit, engine mods, suspention mods was done then and there. The only change I have done is the dual exhaust because the original AMG muffler was tired anyways. This car still has its original AMG dealer plate frames and car cover. So all of the non believers, haters or whatever, this car is as authentic PRE-MERGER AMG as the Corolla you wish you never got!

Yes I remember it well in the car, my parents had the 500 SEC AMG that was in 1984 to 89 .. (Then they bought the 500 SL). Our SEC was also black, but he had bright 15 hole drop center rims, no sports exhaust and no spoilers, but otherwise he was also lowered and had the front, sides and rear aprons. I myself drove the 600 CL / 6.9 liter V12 Brabus from 95 to 98 ... Those were the good old days!

I agree with you there is just something about how these old cars feel. I have a w124 and i swear i have not ever driven a car that rides the same way. These New plastic cars have no soul, they all feel the same. Cheap compared to the w124. Mines a 300D and even in that slow rock, i have way more fun than in a new car. 420 000 miles still going strong! Man i love that car. My dream is a 2.3 16v baby benz. Iv always liked the look of them, maybe ill buy 1 one day.

The W124 is one of the plastic cars. All plastic bumpers and plastic interior. The newer cars have more leather. Older than 1980, they have chrome bumpers, but the truth is the new aluminum bumpers that are hiding under the plastic are way stronger than the chrome.

This car reminds me of Miami Vice with Crocket and Tubs, the drugs lords drove these cars with the Porsche 911's. Back then a 3rd braking light was illegal in Europe and the american versions had them also with the bigger bumper with the red and orange light on the sides. The 80's....good memories!

My father bought one 300 SD 126 in 1981, and drive him, and of course anothers Mercedes all life. One day, he arrived home without 300 SD, but with one 500 SEC. And was that change that make me love Mercedes. I still have the SD, I will never sell him, but the SEC is the most beautiful coupé of Mercedes. And that engine is Mozartian.

RIP Winnie. Me and my mate above, blagged one of these for the the whole day in 1994, what a day. We used his Cosworth (original) as bait for a test drive. What a motor, it was like driving a house admittedly but the pick up was out of this world. I remember trying to start it at lights as I thought I had stalled it, there was nothing when left alone, it was as silent as Andy Mc Nab in a mosque but it roared like a dragon when you hit the floor. I remember the seat belt coming out for me, that was cool, I'd never seen anything like that before and I was in my my mid 20's, so it gave me a semi. Top car to drive, it was as cool as the Spartans in 300 and looked a million pounds, that's a billion dollars. Took it to 134 mph, it had way more but I was more interested in being seen driving it, it was pimpin'. We'd arranged for the 911 convertible the next day but the people test driving that afternoon bought it, bastards. The two of us used to do it all the time but the 500 sec AM MOFU G was the Daddy. Remembering that story, I'm going out this weekend test driving, got me a Z4 M, I should be able to blag something cool, maybe the new one, I like them, I'll report back. (No I won't)

Everyone rats and bitches about automatics here. Merc auto boxes are some of the finest ever built. Yeah they're not things you really burn out with or drift with, so what? You don't use a big mercedes to burn out with. You use them to sail past the twat next to you ragging his manual tdi golf. And even with a 200k block you can get to 62mph in 6 seconds and the famous limited 155. You wanna rag your car in various directions? Get a manual. You want a solid but powerful car to blow your socks off every day but do it in complete comfort? You'd do well to heed this guys advice. Buying my 2000 clk was the best thing I ever did. I can drive in complete confidence every day, in performance and in reliability.

My clk200 has an awful gearbox. Slow shifting and the tiptronic is so slow it's pointless. But it hasn't gone wrong yet. Just the way it is apparently lol
