Glad you covered the updated Mercedes diesel hybrid drivetrain. Steering wheeling is horrible. The rear window wiper should be tucked up under the spoiler- currently looks like a wiper from a mini cooper.

Diesel inline six in the GLE all the way, of course. Aside from that the Diesel hybrid is interesting for a very specific use case, combining long range cruise (on Diesel) with short(ish) range zero emission driving from/to location of short shopping trips in the suburbs (all on battery). A hybrid inline six Diesel would be interesting ...

A car like this requires a 6 cyls, full stop. I can see the sense for entering LEZ, having anyway an ICE outside them. Very bulky thing for european roads and parking lots. Fair review as always.

"As expected, the GLE doesn't notice this obstacle even with traction control off, because unlike the Lexus RX, in which the rear axle is driven by an electric motor and the front by an internal combustion engine, the Mercedes' 4MATIC AWD system controls both axles." lol it gets the same, maybe 5 miles more range as my 13 year old chevy volt, gets about 10-20% more mpg on the motor, and only costs 100k usd or 16x more than what i paid for my car. the us is probably the only place on earth that has cheap 2nd hand phev's that no one knows about still. i mean its a new car and a murdersadies benz... but i dont know how someone can think theyre saving any money in a new car. phev's in the us are selling like hot cakes right now, jpn mfg are limiting the number built to like 10% of total inventory and only specing them as the highest trim levels coz they know they can.

PHEVS are simultaneously the best and worst of both worlds, but with EV infrastructure the way it is here and being a single car family it's the drivetrain closest to fulfilling 100% of my needs. I can't say I'm a fan of this car, feels like too much tech and not enough luxury. To me luxury should be effortless but having touch sensitive buttons and the extra touch screen just seems like more stress.
@MarekDrivesENG3 ай бұрын
That's the problem with new cars. European carmakers claim their research shows new buyers (Chinese buyers allegedly) want karaoke in their cars, and they oblige. I don't think people need or want karaoke in their cars, but what do I know? Touchscreens make it easier to implement new safety features, as well as leave an open gate to selling subscription services. To me this is a double edged sword, because a good salesperson will help me spec the car up beyond what I need, but who cares, since I've already paid for it. Meanwhile the option to test out certain features, and then decide I don't need them, may not be the effect carmakers want. But then again, if they want to sell cars online without a salesperson, then there's no way for them to convince me I need this or that feature.

6-cylinder power all the way. Problem with PHEV’s is once the battery is flat, you are just carrying around 300kgs of dead batteries and motors and expecting the standard engine to deal with it. Only reason you might want this car is for tax purposes. Other than that, it’s a waste of time.
@alliejr3 ай бұрын
The battery recharges as you drive around. It’s never dead weight.

Yes, it seems like a compliance powertrain. Having said that, I imagine in some parts of the world it makes sense. Long motorway trips, and then zero emissions pottering around town. In a 2.5 ton SUV, but that's the world we live in.
@MarekDrivesENG3 ай бұрын
@alliejr actually it no longer does. Not entirely anyway. Just a small portion of it that allows you to drive this car like a Prius.

Wait you can't charge while driving? So when you are on the highway and your battery is at partial/no charge you just waste fuel and are causing more emissions then you should be since you have to keep driving on diesel when the battery runs out?
@MarekDrivesENG22 күн бұрын
Not exactly. The traction battery has a a buffer for use as a regular hybrid, and that buffer gets recharged with excess kinetic energy. However most (or all) carmakers deleted the option to charge the traction battery to full on longer journeys (probably due to emissions restrictions), which IMO makes PHEVs somewhat less attractive.
