Mercedes handbrake lever sticking (fix)

Thanks - helped me today with my W212 parking brake. For me only the pedal spindle and the grey steel spring needed lubricating with PTFE spray lube. On cold winter mornings the pedal would not rise at all and needed to be pulled up with my foot. Now after applying PTFE spray to the spring and spindle the pedal flies up with a positive clunk - just like it used to. I think the pedal torsion spring binds when cold because the cold makes it contract making the pedal stick. For me, normal operation was restored without the need to spray lubricant into the cable.

Not wishing to poke my nose in but this job may come back. Normally the fault is the park brake cable quadrant under the back seat is partially seized. Same fix, remove seat base and inspection panel and soak for ages. Really common mate.

That isn’t poking your nose in, that is what this place is about. Finding common problems & informing others. Now if it does come back I know where to go to find/fix the return visit issue fast and effectively due to your reply. I think there was an inspection cover on previous models but pretty sure there isn’t one on the 212 unfortunately

One commenter mentioned an adjustable arm underneath the rear seat but it isn’t on this model. It is too hard though, hopefully it helps 🤞🤞🤞

Mine is the same and it's heat related. If its really cold when I get in the car I have to pull the lever and put my foot under the pedal to loft it up. The colder it is then the more effort is required. If I get in the car in thr afternoon and it's warm, there is no problem. So I'll take your advice and squirt some WD40 down the cable, and if it's at all possible, get to the fulcrum point on the pedal and give that a dose of liquid magic as well.

I did this last night, and this morning it was freezing cold, and the pedal was a little freer, but still would not come up by itself. So the pedal must have been contributing to the overall stickyness. I may have to look at the quadrant under the seat. I have the Coupe model, does anyone know how the back seat base lifts up so I can get to the inspection cover ? in my old CLK, you just lifted the base form the back of the seat, this does not seem to be the case on the E220 as far as I can see.

@@davefrance3721 the seat should be easy enough to lift, check to see if there are any bolts along where the seat meets the carpet. If not it just pulls up. Also I had seen comments about that lever underneath the back seat but it wasn’t on mine but my one is an estate 🤞🤞

I’ve had these levers disassembled on a few occasions now Dave & it’s quite a cool setup. It is just a spring around a shaft that the lever pivots on & the spring center is used to grab onto the shaft. So there are no moving parts, a good design but it too me 4 hrs to figure that out the 1st. time ☹️
