Mercedes ignition lock tumbler removal W124 300E 300TE 1990

This is how to remove the tumbler assy from the ignition module. Just make sure your rods are long enough, and the taper of the rod is towards the inside...facing the key.

Thanks for this. spent about 2 hours trying to fix up an old assembly that had the key barrel removed and the metal screw cap cut in two. New cylinder. Welded the heavy black screw cover together again- despite key tuning I couldn’t get the ignition to turn. I now see I am missing the blue and white plastic insert. You saved me spending anymore time on this. Do u know if the inserts can still be purchased ? 😊

I had two of this make and model. The daily driver ignition was starting to "stick" when I turned the key. Researching the issue, I was told that if it gets to the point where it will not turn at all, it is much more difficult to fix. So I switched them out.

hi, i was watching your video and noticed you didn't show how you removed the cover that sits ontop of the tumbler, i ask because i'm currently having difficulty getting passed it an wondering if you could give me some advice, cheers

The trim pops off with a slight wedging from something non marring, like plastic. The outer black ring around the key hole, if I remember correctly, comes off with the tumbler assembly complete when you do the wire device to remove.

would you consider using a drill before buying a lock assembly??

+Emile-Frederick SALIBA If you have to drill it, you are looking at replacing the entire assy, not just the tumbler. But if that is your situation, we do what it takes to get the job done. One thing to note...we try to avoid replacing the entire assy because there is a lot more involved as the steering lock and shifter lock are incorporated into that assy, but are not dealt with at all when just replacing the tumbler.

You gotta cut the whole module off and install a whole new module. Friend of mine broke his key inside his tumbler so that had to be done to his C124

If it has two opposing holes, this should work. If it has only one hole, then I believe you only need one wire. There is another youtuber with a video posted with one hole.

+Emile-Frederick SALIBA My research at that time indicated that there was no way to remove the tumbler easily without having the key AND that the key needs to be able to turn. If you wait to the point that the key no longer turns, it is basically the same as not having the key at all.

+Oscar Gomez I got mine on ebay, and they were expensive. But honestly, I rarely use the manuals as virtually any info you need is on the net. Also, there are free downloads out there of a two disc set that give you pretty much everything you need as well. Today, manuals are pretty much obsolete. Besides, whatever issue you are having has probably been addressed several times in the many forums that are out there. I have solved most of my problems based on other members trial and error approach to repair.

+xpd It is the factory service manual for that model year. Stupid expensive, but in 1990, that was all we really had for detailed service instructions. Now, most anything you could possibly need to do to a 90 Mercedes has been covered online making the factory service manual virtually obsolete.
